Background

Xu Sanshi’s mother, Xue Lingxun, is a Dou Ling princess and the elder sister of Chu Qing’s mother, Xue Lingyi. Rather than accept an arranged marriage into the Heavenly Sun Family, she eloped with Xu Sanshi’s father of the reclusive Mysterious Nether Sect. The broken engagement left their family at odds with Heavenly Sun Douluo and estranged from the imperial court 4.

Xu Sanshi resents the court’s treatment of his parents and attends the imperial banquet for his mother’s sake. Although outwardly dismissive of the weakened imperial family, he is deeply hurt by the expectation that his family should continue yielding to its political enemies 4 9.

Personality

Xu Sanshi behaves respectfully before his elders but quickly becomes boastful, irreverent, and competitive when alone with Chu Qing. He declares his ambition to stand at the continent’s pinnacle, yet privately recognizes when his cousin is stronger. Their first outing ends with an accidental meeting at the same brothel and an agreement to conceal the visit 4.

His swagger does not prevent generosity or concern for others. He initially refuses Chu Qing’s gift of a Ten Thousand Year Soul Bone because he believes Chu Qing deserves it. When Jiang Nannan arrives at his sect under desperate circumstances, he releases her from the expected arrangement, gives her medicine, and offers to support her education 11 28.

He protects teammates even at considerable personal cost, but is neither fearless nor immune to embarrassment. He takes Shen Ce’s attack for Huo Yuhao, worries about Jiang Nannan intercepting an unknown strike, and later openly protests being sent against Evil Soul Masters far above his level 69 70 111.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Imperial Banquet

Heavenly Sun Douluo arranges a contest between his grandson Yang Tian and Xu Sanshi. Hoping to ease the families’ conflict, Xu Sanshi’s father initially tells him to hold back and lose. Xu Sanshi obeys, retreats throughout the fight, and is kicked off the stage 9.

Seeing their son injured and crying changes his parents’ minds. His father orders him to fight back, while Xue Lingxun heals and encourages him. Xu Sanshi returns to the stage and kicks Yang Tian off twice, then defeats two more challengers before asking Chu Qing to take over while he recovers 9 10.

Chu Qing wins the prize Soul Bone and hands it to him afterward. Xu Sanshi promises to repay the gift with a Hundred Thousand Year Soul Bone; Chu Qing specifies one from a top-ten Ferocious Beast 11.

Soul Fighting Society

Xu Sanshi joins Chu Qing, Xue Shiqi, and Li Zhongyuan in founding the Soul Fighting Society to commercialize their card game. The Dou Ling Emperor grants the project land and promises support throughout the empire 13.

During a later vacation from Shrek, Xu Sanshi tries the society’s new game, Soul Beast Kill, and asks that his future Shrek Seven Devils card be made the strongest. He then carries a distribution-point contract back to the Mysterious Nether Sect 28.

Bloodline Awakening and Jiang Nannan

After meeting Bei Bei at Shrek, Xu Sanshi asks his father to arrange his Black Tortoise Bloodline awakening. He had previously resisted the process, but his encounters with outstanding peers strengthen his desire to improve 28.

The sect selects Jiang Nannan, who has sold herself in exchange for medicine for her mother. Remembering Chu Qing’s earlier request to look after her, Xu Sanshi instead gives her the pill without payment and offers to fund her studies at Shrek. He is baffled when she insists that she has never met Chu Qing. The sect subsequently finds another girl and conducts a secret ceremony with Xu Sanshi 28.

The following school year, he brings Jiang Nannan to the Soul Fighting Society, where she accepts vacation work from Chu Qing. Later, he confirms that Chu Qing has no romantic interest in her before announcing his intention to pursue her himself 29 42.

Jin Su’s Hotel Meeting

Xu Sanshi gives Chu Qing a hotel room card after Jin Su claims to be an old friend preparing a surprise. The meeting instead begins with her stabbing Chu Qing with the Golden Dragon Spear 42 43.

Xu Sanshi looks guilty when the confrontation spills into the plaza, but explains that he believed Jin Su’s story. Afterward, he volunteers to pay compensation for the damage because he set the meeting in motion 43 44.

Continental Academy Tournament

As a Shrek reserve, Xu Sanshi is caught between his academy and his friends at Qianling. He tries to defuse their hotel confrontation, then briefs Wang Yan on Tang Wutong’s Martial Souls and everything he knows about Chu Qing’s abilities and Soul Bones 58.

He warns Shrek’s confident main-team members not to underestimate Chu Qing. In their subsequent battle, he shields Huo Yuhao, conserves power to withstand Chu Qing, and uses Soul Ring Fusion in a failed attempt to stop the transformed bull python. When the fighting escalates further, he and Bei Bei withdraw while calling for Jiang Nannan and Jin Suqiu to retreat 65 68 69 71 73.

During the finals’ team battle, Jin Suqiu throws Xu Sanshi out of bounds so he can use Xuanming Displacement on Chu Qing. She then takes Chu Qing out of the competition area with herself, leaving Xu Sanshi surrounded by Qianling’s remaining fighters 82.

Qianling beats him while Yan Sisi alters his pleas for rescue into provocative taunts. Shrek wins the round when Qianling concedes, and Huo Yuhao mistakes Xu Sanshi’s apparent refusal to beg for mercy as heroic resolve. Xu Sanshi plays along with the praise, only to become dizzy and nearly collapse moments later 82.

Star Dou Crisis

Xu Sanshi later accompanies Shrek’s Inspection Corps to Star Dou. He intervenes when Xiong Kong confronts Chu Qing, vouching for his cousin’s relationship with Jin Suqiu and helping prevent a fight 111.

After learning that the hostile Evil Soul Masters are Soul Saints and Soul Douluo, he reports their strength to Zhang Lexuan. She orders the weaker disciples to return for help but explicitly keeps Xu Sanshi and Gongyang Mo with the group. His frightened request to leave is ignored 111.

Relationships

• Chu Qing — Maternal cousin, friend, and tournament opponent. Their teasing companionship develops into mutual support, though Xu Sanshi also shares Chu Qing’s combat information with Shrek 4 11 58.
