Abilities & Skills
Metal Spiritual Essence Absorption
The Golden Cicada draws metal spiritual power out of magical treasures through its mouthparts 30 37.
- Creates a powerful suction vortex capable of holding the Embroidered Gold Sword in place, preventing Su Fuxi from recalling it 30.
- Drains the trapped weapon’s metal spiritual power, threatening to render flying swords and similar treasures useless 30.
- Must interrupt its suction to defend against a sufficiently dangerous attack; Su Fuxi exploited this with the Great Luo Finger to recover her sword 30.
Wing Defense
Its wings serve as shields against both weapons and spells 30.
- Blocked direct attacks from the Embroidered Gold Sword and Su Fuxi’s spike treasure 30 37.
- Withstood the Great Luo Finger for three breaths, though the impact left a finger mark roughly three inches deep and numerous cracks 30.
- Survived the spike treasure’s self-destruction, but suffered a facial gash, a shattered wing corner, and severe loss of vitality 37.
- Wing damage can prevent flight until treated 38.
Flight and Transport
The Golden Cicada provides fast, stable transport over long distances 38 42 43.
- At full strength, travels dozens of zhang with a single wingbeat 42.
- Carries both Su Fuxi and Lin Sui; its flight is steady enough for Lin Sui to meditate on its back 42 43.
- Can hover beside a landing site and disperse clouds and mist with its wings 43.
- Its imposing size prompts passing cultivators to give it a wide berth 43.
Behavior
The Golden Cicada possesses enough intelligence to understand Su Fuxi’s offer of food in exchange for acknowledging her as its master. Already frightened by her strength, it lowered its head submissively, nodded its agreement, and offered no resistance when she replaced Gu Sheng’s soul imprint 38.
It particularly favors treasures with the metal spirit attribute and eagerly catches and devours Gold-Birth Fruits with its mouthpart feelers. At the Black Rock Mountain Range’s cold spring, it appeared uncomfortable with the rising cold 36 38 43.
History
Service Under Gu Sheng
Gu Sheng deployed the Golden Cicada during his ambush of Su Fuxi alongside Zha Wuren. It trapped her Embroidered Gold Sword, but her Great Luo Finger forced it onto the defensive and damaged its wings, leaving it listless 30.
Su Fuxi later used its appetite for metal-attributed treasures to lure Gu Sheng to Ink Spirit Hill by spreading news of ripening Gold-Birth Fruits. During their rematch, she detonated her spike treasure as the cicada attempted to drain it. The blast severely injured the insect, forcing Gu Sheng to put it away before Su Fuxi killed him with the sect master’s sword intent 36 37.
Taming by Su Fuxi
Among Gu Sheng’s possessions, Su Fuxi found the cicada resting on a mountain of gold and absorbing a golden pill. She chose to keep it while giving the Spirit-Corroding Insects to Lin Sui 38.
After securing its submission, she erased Gu Sheng’s soul imprint and branded it with her own divine sense. She then fed it fruit and healing pills until it could fly again, immediately mounting it to seek out Lin Sui 38.
Travel Through the Secret Realm
Following Su Fuxi’s recovery from cold poison, the cicada carried her and Lin Sui toward the Black Rock Mountain Range. Their route brought them across Sun Fu, whom Su Fuxi rescued from a pursuing Divine Sword Sect cultivator 42 43.
It subsequently transported them to the cold spring and carried Su Fuxi away toward the flood serpent’s lair. After Lin Sui finished cultivating, it carried both master and disciple toward the secret realm’s exit. They arrived three days later, and Su Fuxi put it away before passing through the fissure 43 44 45.
Relationships
- Su Fuxi — Current master. Won its submission through intimidation and food, replaced its previous soul imprint, and adopted it as her mount 38.
- Daoist Gu Sheng / Red Robe Daoist — Former master. Controlled it in battle and was visibly distressed by its injuries, withdrawing it after the explosion at Ink Spirit Hill 30 37.
- Lin Sui — Frequent passenger. After its taming, he thought its formerly terrifying appearance had become docile and cute 39 42 44.
