History

Apprenticeship and Tortheldrin’s Secret

Aegwynn trained under Guardian Magna Scarville. Nobles who courted his other apprentices ignored her because they believed a girl could never become Guardian. Her talent, diligence, and unusual ability to sense magic convinced Scarville that she should succeed him 122.

Her closest companion was Tortheldrin, who lived among the Guardians disguised as a human. While testing detection magic from Metri’s scroll in the Library, she exposed his Eternal Elf appearance. Although initially shocked, she refused to let him leave, called him her family, and promised to protect his secret 122.

Scarville eventually made Aegwynn his sole apprentice, and Tortheldrin joined her as a fellow student. Their regular duels exposed gaps in her technique: despite suppressing his strength to her level, Tortheldrin repeatedly defeated her by a single move and explained her mistakes afterward 123.

Becoming Guardian

Upon reaching adulthood, Aegwynn inherited the Guardians’ accumulated power from Scarville. She pledged to protect Azeroth and destroy invading demons, while Tortheldrin helped her bring the initially unstable energy under control 123 124.

On an early mission, she killed a Dreadlord while Tortheldrin rescued its captives and dealt with an Infernal. The Council of Tirisfal reprimanded them for acting without authorization. Aegwynn defended their decision on the grounds that delaying the rescue would have cost civilian lives, establishing the central disagreement between her priorities and the Council’s authority 125.

Northrend and Sargeras’s Avatar

After detecting demonic activity in Northrend, Aegwynn and Tortheldrin joined Snyder and the Dragon Aspects. During preparations for an ambush, Tortheldrin confessed that he wanted to live with her; she accepted by taking his hand and kissing him 126 127.

Aegwynn devastated the demons gathered around Snyder’s magical bait with lightning, blue flames, and transmutation. When Sargeras’s avatar appeared, however, the battle required the allies’ combined efforts. Aegwynn selected a powerful spell from the old Guardians’ spellbook, constructed it with Tortheldrin’s mana, and cast it after Malygos strengthened it. Snyder held the avatar’s attention, while Alexstrasza protected the casters 127 128 129.

The spell broke the avatar’s Fel shield and defeated it. Aegwynn subsequently restrained its remains and sealed its portal-opening scepter inside a Titan facility. Her draining circles redirected the avatar’s Fel energy into its restraints, and Snyder added an outer elemental seal 129 130 131.

Extended Service and Family Life

Decades later, Aegwynn and Tortheldrin discovered that Council leaders were conspiring to overthrow human kings. Fearing that a compliant successor would give them control of the Guardian’s Power, she rejected their chosen candidate at the end of her hundred-year term and announced that she would remain Guardian 131 132.

Tortheldrin built their family home, Karazhan, in Deadwind Pass. Aegwynn named the tower and concealed it with large-scale invisibility magic. She also extended her life through a spell and gave birth to their son, Medivh 133 134.

Parenthood prompted the couple to reconsider retirement. They left Medivh with Archmage Elisande in Ge’aotesi before visiting the Council in Dalaran, willing to return the Guardian’s Power if its members had changed. Instead, the Council demanded her power and defended its political interference. Tortheldrin attacked the assembled mages, and Aegwynn teleported them home. The Council subsequently founded the Tirisfal Arcanum to oppose them 134.

The couple also repaired the Tomb of Sargeras as a secret fallback outpost. Aegwynn activated the Titan-forged Vigilant Attendant and ordered her to guard the site and contain its spreading Fel corruption 136 137.

Mage Hunters and the Council’s Fall

After a further century, the Council deployed Mage Hunters equipped with relics and knowledge of the couple’s fighting styles. Aegwynn and Tortheldrin sent Medivh to the Eternal Elves’ School of Magic, both for his education and to keep him away from the growing danger. When he chose to pursue the Guardianship, Aegwynn promised him Atiesh after graduation and a successful trial 143 145 146.

Returning to Karazhan, the couple discovered Mage Hunters inside their concealment defenses. Aegwynn rescued Tortheldrin from an encirclement by turning the floor to glass, shattering it, and pulling him clear with an Arcane whip. She later overcame a Guardian-countering relic through Aluneth’s independent Arcane power. After sealing the attackers’ unstable accumulated energy, the couple repaired Karazhan and prepared to leave 146 147 148.

Aegwynn later helped search for Snyder following his disappearance. Before the Eternal Elves attacked the Council, she insisted on investigating its involvement and protecting Dalaran’s civilians. Finding Snyder’s elemental energy in the Council’s weapons convinced her that it had acted against him, although the subsequent investigation revealed that Sargeras’s Remnant Soul had planted most of the gems as a diversion 160 162 163.

Aegwynn and the Eternal Elves brought down the Council of Tirisfal. She then selected six powerful mages who had opposed its political ambitions to form Dalaran’s new Council of Six 163.

Invasion and Rejuvenation

By the Burning Legion’s renewed invasion, Medivh had become Guardian and carried Atiesh. Aegwynn accompanied him to investigate the Black Morass, evacuated civilians pursued by Orcs, and brought survivors and recorded evidence to King Llane 170 171 172.

She worked with Khadgar to buy food before nobles could exploit wartime shortages and helped organize the rescue of Stormwind’s soldiers at Goldshire. Despite her continued activity, her age was catching up with her: she concealed her deterioration and feared that further large-scale spellcasting would leave her an old woman 173 174 177.

At Medivh’s request, Snyder treated her in Lordaeron. He infused her with Well of Eternity water, using Titans Power to stabilize energy that otherwise threatened to tear her apart. The treatment restored her appearance to that of her early Guardianship and extended her lifespan indefinitely 177 180.

Appearance

  • Hair: Golden; begins turning white with age before Snyder’s treatment restores its original color 180.
  • Youthful appearance: Guardian’s Power initially preserves her appearance as a woman in her twenties or thirties despite decades of service 126.
  • Later aging: Develops faint wrinkles around her eyes and eventually visible deterioration before her rejuvenation 145 177 180.
  • Usual attire: Guardian’s robes, accompanied by the Aluneth Extractor or Atiesh 124 126 134.

Personality

Aegwynn places the Guardian’s protective duties above institutional obedience. She openly challenges the Council when its rules obstruct rescue work and rejects its claim that magical strength entitles it to control human kingdoms. Even after years of persecution, she insists that accusations be investigated and that Dalaran’s civilians remain unharmed 125 134 162.

She is diligent, competitive, and sometimes overconfident. Tortheldrin’s victories encourage her to study harder, while inheriting Guardian’s Power makes her eager for a rematch. Her confidence occasionally leads her to dismiss the Council’s threat, though she accepts Tortheldrin’s warnings 123 132.

With her family, she is affectionate and playful without abandoning discipline. She teases Medivh and sides with him in lighthearted arguments, but also hands him over for his studies when he tries to hide behind her. His decision to become Guardian brings her pride alongside guilt over the responsibility he will inherit 133 134 145 146.

Abilities & Skills

Guardian’s Power

Aegwynn inherits the accumulated magical power of earlier Guardians 123.

  • Greatly amplifies her spellcasting, initially to the point of dangerous instability 123.
  • Preserves her youthful appearance for decades and can fuel a separate life-extending spell 126 133.
  • Activates the Titan-forged Vigilant Attendant 136.
  • Can be countered by specialized Council relics; it is not her only source of magical strength 147 148.

Arcane and Elemental Combat

Her arsenal combines direct attacks, battlefield control, and prepared magic 125 127 147.

  • Arcane attacks: Uses Arcane Blast and sustained ranged pressure to prevent enemies from closing in 125 146.
  • Lightning: Kills groups of demons and forms a vast lightning prison around survivors 127.
  • Fire: Unleashes torrents of blue flame and uses Pyroblast against the Mage Hunters’ shared shield 128 146.
  • Prepared circles: Uses hidden magic circles against intruders in Karazhan 147.
  • Combined casting: Channels an old Guardian spell capable of defeating Sargeras’s avatar with allied mana and protection; its lengthy preparation leaves her dependent on support 129.

Transmutation and Magical Manipulation

Aegwynn uses transformations and constructed Arcane tools to disrupt enemies and rescue allies 128 147.

  • Turns a Pit Lord’s body into transparent glass 128.
  • Converts stone flooring into glass, then shatters it with a sonic spell 147.
  • Creates an Arcane whip to pull Tortheldrin out of danger 147.

Detection, Concealment, and Travel

Her magical perception is exceptional even among Guardian candidates 122.

  • Uses Metri’s detection spell to reveal true forms and expose Tortheldrin’s disguise 122.
  • Casts large-scale invisibility around Karazhan and detects that its concealment has been breached 133 146.
  • Uses Blink, teleportation, and portals for travel, retreat, and civilian evacuation 126 134 143 155 171.

Sealing and Magical Craftsmanship

She adapts existing magical knowledge into weapons and containment systems 124 131.

  • Designs the Aluneth Extractor by improving an energy-extraction method found in Metri’s writings 124.
  • Constructs Fel-draining circles for Sargeras’s avatar and scepter 131.
  • Helps guide unstable enemy magic into the Sealing Gem 148.
  • Her avatar-binding circle requires reinforcement because its effectiveness diminishes over time 131.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Aluneth, Guardian’s Staff / Aluneth Extractor — Her self-made staff draws pure Arcane power from Aluneth. Originally fitted with three crystals, it gains a fourth after absorbing an energy fragment supplied by Malygos. Its independent power allows her to overcome a relic that cancels Guardian’s Power 124 130 148.
  • Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian — An inherited staff with an owl-shaped top, a precious-wood shaft, and hanging ornaments. She uses it when Aluneth refuses to respond and later promises it to Medivh 126 146.
  • Well of Eternity water crystal — A gift from Snyder following the Northrend battle, later shown to Medivh as evidence of the king’s approval of his parents’ relationship 128 145.
  • Sealing Gem — Used jointly with Tortheldrin to contain the Mage Hunters’ unstable magic. It is insufficient to contain the Fel power of Sargeras’s avatar 148 155.
  • Demon-binding chains — Council-designed restraints used with her draining circles to imprison Sargeras’s avatar and scepter 131.
  • Magic Backpack — Carries equipment including Atiesh, crystals, and restraints 131 145 146.

Relationships

  • Prince Tortheldrin — Childhood companion, sparring partner, fellow student, and eventual husband. His instruction supports her development, and their shared home is Karazhan 122 123 127 133.
  • Medivh — Son and successor as Guardian. She contributes to his magical education and supports his choice to inherit her duties, while worrying about its burden 143 146 170 171.
  • Magna Scarville — Teacher and predecessor. Recognizes her unusual talent, makes her his sole apprentice, and transfers the Guardian’s Power to her 122 123.
  • Snyder — Ally against Sargeras’s avatar and supporter of her family. She helps search for him after his disappearance; he later restores her youth 129 145 162 180.
  • Aluneth — Arcane being whose power she extracts through her staff. Their relationship includes frequent bickering; it refuses to assist against Sargeras out of fear of exposing its home world 124 130.
  • Archmage Elisande — Trusted caretaker and teacher for Medivh, providing him refuge and later overseeing his studies 134 143.
  • Khadgar — Medivh’s apprentice and her collaborator in supplying Stormwind’s refugees and organizing rescue efforts 173 174 177.
