History
Opposition to the Magic Ban
After the destruction of the Well of Eternity and the Burning Legion's defeat, Dath'Remar sought Snyder Rain's support against Malfurion and Tyrande. He believed they were dividing the elves and denying the Highborne their rights. Snyder considered the separation inevitable and urged him to prepare to leave instead 1.
Dath'Remar initially refused to abandon Kalimdor, insisting that his people would eventually accept magic again. Nevertheless, he privately recognized exile as a possibility and kept water obtained from Illidan as his greatest safeguard for the Highborne's future 10.
For thousands of years, the Sunstrider family and its subordinate families sustained their followers with stored magic crystals. Dath'Remar resisted nobles who wanted to restore the Ancient Kaldorei Empire, understanding that the Night Elves tolerated their magical studies only to avoid another division. That uneasy restraint collapsed as the reserves dwindled and some Highborne were sentenced to death for continuing to practice magic 22 47 51.
Exile from Kalimdor
Dath'Remar confronted Tyrande over the executions and argued that the Highborne had become inseparable from magic. He offered to keep their studies out of ordinary people's sight, but Tyrande refused any exception to the prohibition 51 52.
In response, Dath'Remar and his followers openly practiced Arcane Magic and unleashed a magical storm in Ashenvale. Tyrande ordered their exile rather than mass executions. Dath'Remar calmly accepted the sentence, gathered his people and belongings, and departed aboard a prepared fleet 52.
After several years at sea, the Highborne detected the Eastern Kingdoms and made landfall. Scouts discovered an abandoned Night Elf outpost, giving Dath'Remar reason to suspect that Snyder's people had reached the continent before them 52 53.
Search for a Homeland
While exploring near the outpost, Dath'Remar found a fading communication crystal beneath a large tree and restored it with magical energy. The crystal connected him to Jarod Shadowsong, who offered to contact Snyder. He also met Apophis, the deceased Vrykul chieftain whose soul remained by the tree, and exchanged accounts of their lives 53 54.
Snyder reunited with Dath'Remar and supplied a real-time elemental map of the Eastern Kingdoms. Dath'Remar rejected the surrounding Vrykul lands because he wanted to avoid competing with their inhabitants for resources. Instead, he selected a northern site that Snyder identified as Forest Troll territory and former sacred land. Dath'Remar dismissed the warning, confident that the Trolls would be easily defeated 56.
He began organizing reconnaissance and a vanguard of two thousand soldiers, with skilled mages also intended to join it. His migration plan assigned protection for civilians, designated vanguard, rear guard, and reserve forces, and required arrival within two months: the remaining magic crystals would sustain the Highborne for only three 57 63.
Possession by Zakajz's Remnant
Exhaustion and emotional turmoil left Dath'Remar vulnerable to black mist left behind by Zakajz. It entered his body and amplified his fear, anger, resentment, and arrogance. Snyder and Jarod noticed abrupt changes in his behavior, while Dath'Remar himself suffered headaches and struggled to understand his instability 59 60 61.
Feeding on his negative emotions, the remnant progressed from influencing him intermittently to possessing him. It received instructions from the Old Gods to provoke war and chaos. Dath'Remar's decision to move north had already prevented its intended conflict with the local Vrykul, so it turned to exploiting the existing hostility between elves and Forest Trolls 64.
During the fighting, the possessing entity used his authority to deepen hatred and prolong bloodshed. Dath'Remar's own will continued resisting, especially when civilian lives were threatened, but he could not reliably stop the decisions made through his body 72 76 86 103.
Poisoning and Purification
Shadow Hunters ambushed Dath'Remar in his command post. He killed their captain with Flamestrike, but the captain's poisoned blade struck his shoulder. With no antidote available, Dath'Remar ordered his adjutant to sever his left arm before the poison could spread farther 74 75 76.
Still under the remnant's control, he later charged the Wild Bear Loa priest and deliberately exposed himself to danger so that Highborne soldiers would die attempting to rescue him. After the Hand of the Bright Moon defeated the priest, Jarod—disguised among the Highborne—stabbed Dath'Remar with the Silver Blade to purify the black energy 101 102.
The purification succeeded, and Shamans healed the abdominal wound. However, the remnant had fused with Dath'Remar's soul, leaving irreversible damage and greatly reduced energy. On waking, he stopped his guards from retaliating against Jarod, acknowledged that he had been controlled, and ordered them to aid their allies 102 103.
Founding Quel'Thalas
After the Forest Trolls' defeat, Dath'Remar thanked Snyder and expressed guilt over the lives lost through the remnant's decisions. He reunited the surviving troops and civilians into one force and pressed onward to their destination 106.
At a small lake where magical energy was strongest, he poured in his preserved water from the Well of Eternity. The reaction created the Sunwell, providing the Highborne with an abundant magical source and a foundation for their new kingdom 107.
Dath'Remar assigned Daren Theron to guard the Sunwell and worked with his strongest Archmages on Ban'dinoriel, a defensive barrier formed through Rune Stone arrays along the borders. As their city took shape, he combined a celebration of the end of their wandering with his coronation 107 108.
His people adopted the name High Elves, and their realm became Quel'Thalas. Dath'Remar continued leading troops on the front lines against Forest Troll attacks until his death. The completed Ban'dinoriel subsequently forced the Trolls to concentrate on elves who ventured outside its protection 109.
Appearance
- Golden hair and a handsome face: His hair shines in sunlight; his appearance in ancestral armor is described as particularly valiant 1 59.
- Red armor: Wears the Sunstrider family's ancestral armor and carries Flamestrike at his waist 59.
- Missing left arm: Loses it to emergency amputation after the Shadow Hunter captain's poison attack 76.
- Signs of corruption: Black mist or energy flashes through his eyes during his possession; exhaustion also leaves dark circles beneath them 59 60.
- Coronation attire: Wears magnificent ceremonial robes for his procession through the newly built city 108.
Personality
Dath'Remar is fiercely attached to his people and regards access to magic as their birthright. His initial refusal to leave Kalimdor comes from hope that the elves can remain united, rather than indifference to the risks. As a leader, he describes authority and devotion as an “invisible shackle” that constantly reminds him of his responsibilities. He repeatedly postpones rest until his followers can be settled 10 52 57 63.
His concern for his followers coexists with aristocratic inexperience and deep prejudice against Trolls. He admits that he does not know how to speak to commoners, yet reminds his commanders that ordinary people sustain their authority and must be protected. His dismissal of Forest Troll resistance predates full possession; the black energy later magnifies that existing arrogance rather than creating it from nothing 55 56 59 63 64.
After purification, Dath'Remar accepts that his body was used to harm his people and expresses guilt over the casualties. He openly credits his rescuers instead of allowing his guards to treat Jarod's intervention as an assassination attempt 103 106.
