Background / History
Academy Career and Cheng Mo’s Death
More than forty years before the story, Cheng Cheng captained Godwind Academy’s team while Huo Yan captained Blazing Fire Academy’s. Their rivalry developed into a lasting friendship. Twenty-one years before the story, Cheng Cheng led a Godwind team that lost to Shui Mingyu’s team at the Advanced Soul Master Tournament 3 9.
Sixteen years before the story, his son Cheng Mo entered the Advanced Soul Master Tournament as Godwind’s captain. Cheng Mo was twenty years old and had reached level 43. During a match against Spirit Hall Academy for a place among the final three teams, he surrendered after most of his teammates became unable to continue. A level 49 opponent nevertheless struck him at full strength after he lowered his guard 8.
The tournament committee claimed not to have heard the surrender and refused to penalize Spirit Hall Academy. Cheng Cheng sought healing Soul Masters ranging from Soul Elders to Soul Emperors, but none could save his son. Cheng Mo died the day after the grand finals ended. The organizers continued to call the incident an accident and offered compensation 8.
Failed Revenge and Chronic Injuries
Godwind Academy’s dean stopped Cheng Cheng from immediately attacking Spirit Hall’s delegation, which included a Soul Douluo and a Titled Douluo. Cheng Cheng instead spent years secretly seeking an opportunity for revenge 8.
Ten years before the story, he nearly killed his son’s murderer, only for a Spirit Hall Soul Douluo to intervene and gravely injure him. Huo Yan was also injured during this attempt. Cheng Cheng survived, but his cultivation stalled at level 76, and even the Ye Clan in Heaven Dou City could not cure him 2 6 8 9.
Despite his condition, he remained one of Godwind Academy’s two Soul Saints. He handled little administrative work, but more than half the academy’s students had received his cultivation guidance 7 9.
Feng Xiaotian’s Promise
While accompanying Godwind’s team to Blazing Fire Academy, Cheng Cheng witnessed Feng Xiaotian reach level 39. The breakthrough reminded him of Cheng Mo advancing during a similar carriage journey, prompting him to reveal his son’s fate 8.
Feng Xiaotian promised to win the Advanced Soul Master Tournament for Godwind and kill Cheng Mo’s murderer if he became strong enough. Cheng Cheng knelt and offered to acknowledge him as his master, pledging to devote his remaining life to supporting his growth. Feng Xiaotian refused the master–servant arrangement but reaffirmed his promise, eventually persuading him to stand 8 9.
Treatment and Return to Activity
Cheng Cheng’s health prevented him from attending the opening exchange matches at Blazing Fire Academy. His internal injuries soon flared severely, leaving him coughing blood and expecting to die. Believing he could no longer help Feng Xiaotian, he released him from the revenge promise rather than expose him to Spirit Hall’s retaliation 16 20 21.
Feng Xiaotian gave him a healing pill that rapidly eased his injuries, followed by a second pill to take seven days later. He estimated that five pills would complete the treatment. Cheng Cheng asked Feng Xiaotian to call him “Uncle Cheng” and pledged his life and obedience to him 21.
After improving, Cheng Cheng joined Feng He in a tactical sparring session against Feng Xiaotian’s team. Impressed by the captain’s coordination, he predicted that Godwind would win all four exchange matches and encouraged Feng He to hand over team authority. Godwind subsequently achieved that sweep 27 38.
Once recovered, Cheng Cheng accompanied Feng Xiaotian, Feng Qingyang, Ling Qiu, and Feng He to Sunset Forest. He witnessed Feng Xiaotian reveal his ten-thousand-year Fourth Soul Ring and helped guard Feng Qingyang while he absorbed his Seventh Soul Ring 44 46 47 48.
Appearance
- Apparent age: In his sixties 2.
- Build: Lean and outwardly vigorous when introduced 2.
- Facial hair: A few sparse white whiskers on his chin 2.
- During illness: Fatigue, a sickly appearance, and bouts of coughing bloody phlegm; he sometimes forced himself to appear healthy before Huo Yan 6 7 12 17.
Personality
Cheng Cheng is a patient, approachable teacher. He regularly answers students’ cultivation questions despite having little involvement in academy administration. With Feng Xiaotian, he combines encouragement with practical advice, urging him to prioritize Soul Power over researching Gale Consecutive Slashes 6 9.
His son’s death leaves him grief-stricken and intensely committed to revenge. He is willing to surrender his dignity and remaining life for a chance to avenge Cheng Mo, yet his desperation does not entirely override his concern for others: when he believes death is imminent, he tells Feng Xiaotian not to risk becoming Spirit Hall’s enemy on his behalf 8 21.
With Huo Yan, he is teasing and proud, trading insults about which of them will die first. He tries to hide his weakness from his old friend and later jokes that his apparent deathbed condition was merely a prank 12 17 21.
