Appearance

  • Facial features: Sword-like brows, starry eyes, and a prominent nose 6.
  • Age: Appears around the same age as Li Yunjing, in his early twenties 6.
  • Identifying mark: Has a mole on his buttock. Its absence helps Li Yunjing establish that a headless corpse is not his 22.

Personality

Mo Xuan is playful and competitive with Li Yunjing. He teases his senior brother about becoming dao companions with Shui Yao and proposes a race after improving his cultivation. His confidence collapses into comic resentment when Li Yunjing overtakes him and reveals his Qi Refining Completion cultivation 6.

His early doubts about the Luozhen Sect are practical rather than indifferent. He worries that accepting disciples into the failing sect will harm both them and Li Yunjing, yet he and Shui Yao still insist on leaving thirty-seven low-grade Spirit Stones to support their senior brother 6 8. Later, he opposes an expensive open banquet because it would be unnecessary spending merely for show 44.

Surviving the Golden Core tomb expedition strengthens his commitment to the sect. He admits that he should have followed Li Yunjing’s warning and asks to return permanently 24 26. He reacts angrily to the Clear Wind Sect’s betrayal and the Li Household’s encroachment, but accepts Li Yunjing’s decisions to postpone retaliation 25 34.

Background / History

Early Life in the Luozhen Sect

Mo Xuan, Shui Yao, and Li Yunjing entered the Luozhen Sect in the same year. Li Yunjing joined slightly earlier and became their eldest senior brother. The three remained close, but their shared cultivation life ended after their master died of illness 6.

Mo Xuan and Shui Yao became dao companions one month before reuniting with Li Yunjing in Xunxian Town. During their visit to the sect, Mo Xuan hoped to persuade Li Yunjing to abandon its bleak prospects and seek another path. He initially declined an invitation to return as an elder because the sect risked losing Immortal Alliance protection within three months unless it produced a Foundation Establishment cultivator 6 7.

Golden Core Tomb Expedition

Mo Xuan and Shui Yao accepted a Clear Wind Sect mission to explore a supposed Golden Core cave abode in Tiger Leaping Gorge, hoping to earn admission to the sect. Li Yunjing refused their invitation to accompany them and warned them against going. When they remained determined, he gave them five powerful first-grade Law Artifacts for protection 7.

The destination was actually a Golden Core cultivator’s tomb protected by a killing formation. According to Mo Xuan, the Clear Wind Sect concealed this danger and used the mission-takers’ lives to gather information about the formation. He and Shui Yao noticed something wrong and fled, but elite Clear Wind Sect disciples pursued them. Mo Xuan credited Li Yunjing’s five artifacts with allowing them to escape 24 25.

While the pair were missing, Li Yunjing commissioned Gao Jin’s Worry-Relief Shop to search for them. Two headless bodies were briefly suspected to be theirs, but their identifying marks did not match 17 21 22. Li Yunjing later found both companions unconscious beside the Luozhen Sect’s mountain gate and treated them with Immortal Dew Pills, stabilizing Mo Xuan’s pulse and internal Qi 23.

After awakening, Mo Xuan urged Li Yunjing to report the Clear Wind Sect to the Immortal Alliance. He reluctantly accepted his senior brother’s judgment that their evidence and standing would bring little justice, and that revenge should wait until the Luozhen Sect became stronger 24 25.

Return and Sect Administration

Mo Xuan handed Li Yunjing a Storage Bag that he and Shui Yao had recovered during the expedition. Its contents included Foundation Establishment Pills and the Seventy-Two Sword Killing Formation diagram. Learning the treasures’ value convinced him that their near-fatal journey had not been entirely wasted 25 26.

The pair then asked to return to the Luozhen Sect and were welcomed as elders. Mo Xuan initially struggled to adjust to administrative duties, even needing the meaning of Minor Merits explained. He soon worked with Shui Yao to devise the sect’s merit exchange system, record rewards, and arrange construction tasks. He also taught the five disciples how to fight 26 29 30.

Defense of Serene Valley

During Li Yunjing’s seclusion, Mo Xuan and Shui Yao confronted Li Household cultivators who intended to inspect Serene Valley before taking it over. Mo Xuan prepared for a possible battle, then negotiated a restricted survey near the entrance. He stopped an elder from advancing farther into the valley 31.

Mo Xuan represented the sect when the Immortal Alliance arrived for its assessment on September fifteenth. With Li Yunjing still absent, he was forced to acknowledge that the sect had no confirmed Foundation Establishment cultivator. Li Yunjing emerged and announced his breakthrough before the revocation could be completed 33.

Afterward, Mo Xuan protested allowing the Li Household representatives to leave unpunished, but accepted Li Yunjing’s decision not to create another enemy 34.

Foundation Establishment and Later Duties

Li Yunjing postponed his own Foundation Establishment banquet so that Mo Xuan and Shui Yao could celebrate their breakthroughs with him. He directed them to prioritize cultivation, using the improved cultivation room and the available Foundation Establishment Pills as support 34.

Both reached Foundation Establishment, and the three agreed to hold their joint banquet on the ninth day of the twelfth month. Mo Xuan and Shui Yao were assigned to obtain supplies with the five disciples 43 44.

When the Wang Household sought protection against the Zhao Household and the Heavenly Star Bandits, Li Yunjing dispatched Mo Xuan with Wang Shanming. His instructions were to report the situation to Deacon Wang in Xunxian Town and then follow the Immortal Alliance’s lead 50.
