Institute or Office Documented Role
Heavenly Spirit Institute Initially the foremost institute and the strongest in combat. It admits heavenly talents or prospective heavenly talents without dividing them into inner and outer sections, and receives first choice of recruits 4 41 83.
Sword Dao Institute Sword-cultivation institute and Xiao Chen’s original institute. The Sword Martial King later attempts to persuade him to return to a better-resourced teaching environment 1 34.

Teaching and Admission

Educational Philosophy

  • Teaching according to aptitude: The dean identifies this as the academy’s original philosophy and praises the Miscellaneous Dao Institute for continuing to uphold it 117.
  • Specialization: Disciples are encouraged to pursue a path suited to their strengths and interests rather than cultivate indiscriminately 72.
  • Sage teacher inheritances: Every teaching institute possesses such an inheritance, though possessing one does not guarantee the ability to nurture a sage 93.
  • Original techniques: Chu Feng’s institute develops arts including Ten Thousand Swords Return to the Origin, Extreme Dao Divine Fist, Eye of World Destruction, and Ice and Fire God of Cooking. These are not presented as standard academy-wide techniques 122.

Admission Routes

Route Conditions or Procedure
Regular recruitment gathering Held every three years, with individual institutes assessing candidates 373.
Annual special recruitment Institute heads receive one annual quota for recruiting an outside disciple 48.
Dao-Seeking Token Guarantees entry to the academy. Wang Baole is assigned to the Miscellaneous Dao Institute after the eight great institutes decline him 68 69 70.
Affiliated-lineage recommendation Cultivators below Heavenly Origin from recognized Dao lineages can be recommended to study at the academy 111.
Personal recruitment and tokens Established members can arrange admission for chosen disciples. Xiao Chen’s token prompts registration and referral rather than rejection at the mountain gate 356 357.
Talent recognition in Dao-Seeking City Some disciples gain admission after demonstrating exceptional ability at the Life and Death Arena 48.
  • The academy accepts cultivators from other factions provided they do not originate from holy lands 111.
  • Joining an institute does not automatically make a recruit the institute head’s personal disciple. Miscellaneous Dao recruits must pass its outer-institute assessment before qualifying to meet Chu Feng 373.
  • The Heavenly Spirit Institute’s preferential recruitment is justified by its elders as a means of producing famous prodigies who attract further applicants 41.

Grounds and Resources

  • Mountain campuses: The teaching institutes occupy separate mountain grounds. Miaomiao Mountain houses the Miscellaneous Dao Institute and its residential courtyards 4.
  • Dao-Seeking City: Located at the foot of the mountain and governed by the academy. Many residents are disciples’ relatives or unsuccessful applicants 8.
  • Life and Death Arena: A city venue for settling grievances through duels and attracting academy recruiters 48.
  • Mirror Lake and academy square: Venues for competitions and major public ceremonies 19 115 357.
  • Hundred Herbs Garden: Situated behind the Pill Dao Institute and stocked with spirit herbs 34.
  • Holy Institute: A spiritually rich secret realm with rare plants. Ordinary long-term access requires Half-Saint cultivation; even a Saint’s bloodline alone does not qualify someone to remain indefinitely 312.
  • Interworld access: The Holy Institute serves as a gateway to other worlds, including the academy’s Hongyuan undertaking 600.
  • Dao Jade: Available within the academy and capable of carrying the power of the Great Dao 311.
  • Dao Fruit Pills: The Holy Institute uses Divine Spark Fragments to refine these pills. Before Chu Feng’s success, the academy lacked alchemists capable of producing the Supreme-Grade variety 668.

History

The Miscellaneous Dao Institute’s Revival

At the beginning of the story, the Miscellaneous Dao Institute ranks last and faces dissolution. Chu Feng is ordered to recruit a disciple within a month or lose both the institute and his place in the academy. He recruits the crippled former prodigy Xiao Chen and completes his transfer from the Sword Dao Institute 1 2.

Xiao Chen’s return to competition overturns expectations about both himself and his new institute. His subsequent Divine Physique awakening draws the academy’s senior leadership to Miaomiao Mountain. Despite pressure to move elsewhere, he credits Chu Feng’s guidance and insists on remaining 15 34.

The institute’s later tournament performances challenge the Heavenly Spirit Institute’s dominance. Cao Youqian and Qin Qin reach the inner competition’s final, and the dean publicly praises Chu Feng’s aptitude-based teaching. Other institute heads recognize the need to reform their own instruction 115 117.

Holy Sons and Institutional Prominence

Xiao Chen first becomes a prospective Holy Son after the grand competition. He and Cao Youqian are later appointed full Holy Sons, with a celebration scheduled six months after their appointment 117 355.

The Miscellaneous Dao Institute’s changed standing becomes especially visible at the later triennial recruitment gathering: its station moves from an overlooked corner to the most conspicuous position, drawing a long queue before dawn 118 373.

Expansion Beyond the Continent

After the Ten Saints Grand Competition, Chu Feng chooses the newly formed Hongyuan Continent as the academy’s share of the spoils despite the danger posed by its innate beings. The academy celebrates its first-place finish upon returning 599 600.

Chu Feng establishes the Dao-Seeking Sect there. Later visitors explicitly recognize it as the academy’s base and judge that Saints Xiao Chen and Cao Youqian can secure it even without Chu Feng remaining in residence 601 659.

Leadership Succession

Dean Kong’s advancement to Divine King triggers a succession debate. The eligible academy Saints are Bing Yan, Xiao Chen, and Cao Youqian, with the assembled factions primarily supporting Bing Yan or Cao Youqian. Bing Yan agrees to serve and states that the two Holy Sons do not intend to return 670 671.

Chu Feng’s disciples subsequently occupy nearly all institute-head positions. A century later, Nie Xiuyuan becomes a Saint and takes charge of the academy 672 674.

Affiliations and Conflicts

Affiliated Powers

Unlike sect-based holy lands focused on territorial expansion, the academy seeks to spread its disciples throughout the world. It supports some graduates in founding independent factions and preserves those relationships through shared interests and educational privileges 111.

  • White Cloud City — Regarded as a direct academy lineage. Successive city lords study at the academy, and some serve as institute heads 198.
  • Extreme Cold Mountain Manor — One of numerous subordinate Half-Saint factions. Its standing depends partly on producing talented academy disciples and maintaining its connection to Bing Yan 474.
  • Spirit Pill Sect — Its disciple Yun Ye enters the academy’s inner section and is expected to inherit his home sect’s leadership 334.
  • Thunderclap Mountain Villa — Its ties strengthen through Great Sage Benlei’s discipleship under Chu Feng; Chu Feng’s Saint attainment attracts many applicants seeking entry into that teaching lineage 584.
  • Dao-Seeking Sect — The academy’s Hongyuan Continent base, founded by Chu Feng rather than an alternate name for the original academy 601 659.

Rivalries and Confrontations

  • Great Evolution Holy Land — Academy disciples rally around Qin Qin after her sect’s destruction. The conflict escalates when Diwu Qingyun threatens the academy camp and Chu Feng steps forward to defend her 145 149.
  • Blazing Yang Sect — An enemy backed by the Great Evolution Holy Land. Its representatives rely on that backing when confronting Xiao Chen 202 203.
  • Northern Abyss Holy Dynasty — Its official attacks Elder Huang Tao near Northern Jade Mountain. Nie Xiuyuan intervenes and kills him; Huang Tao states that the incident was a deliberate attack on the academy 551 552.
  • Emotion-Forsaking Palace — Wang Baole confronts its disciples after they breach etiquette and refuse to apologize to ordinary academy disciples 556.
  • Sword Dao Academy and Giant God Academy — Receive the academy’s Holy Sons for cross-continent training. Initial challenges lead to demonstrations of Xiao Chen’s sword cultivation and Cao Youqian’s body-tempering strength 438 439 440.
