Background / History
Childhood in the Wang Clan
Wang Baole was taken in by the Wang Clan and raised to become Wang Yulin’s live-in husband. He adopted the clan’s surname, was taught to serve others, and was forbidden from cultivating by an older woman in his courtyard. His position differed little from that of a servant 71 158.
His grandfather eventually found him with a Dao-Seeking Academy token and offered him a chance to change his life. Half a year later, Wang Baole arrived at the academy seeking a master, and Deacon Bai brought him before Chu Feng 69 71.
Finding the Culinary Dao
Chu Feng accepted Wang Baole and had Qin Qin arrange his enrollment and a private courtyard. During their first meal together, Chu Feng noticed an unawakened bloodline hidden beneath the boy’s otherwise ordinary appearance 70.
Wang Baole initially struggled to find a suitable discipline. He learned the thirteen basic sword moves and tried other methods, but feared he was Chu Feng’s worst disciple. When asked what he genuinely loved, he answered that it was eating. Chu Feng used that interest to guide him toward cultivation through cooking 72 73.
He spent his early training practicing basic knife skills, the Five Elements Art, and ingredient preparation. After comprehending Ji Saber Intent, he was sent down the mountain to gain experience, with instructions to return within half a year for the outer sect competition 74 101.
Mist Marsh and the Outer Sect Competition
In Mist Marsh, Wang Baole searched for demonic beasts to use as ingredients. He defeated the Seven Cold-Blooded Eagles, collected their possessions, and attracted the attention of the Ninth Princess and Elder Zhao. Their attempt to approach and recruit him instead developed into an arrangement involving shared meals and training together 102 103 104.
For his first Outer Sect Grand Competition, Wang Baole set reaching the top four as his measure of success. He reached the semifinals against Wuming, whose Buddhist defenses withstood his saber attacks. After losing his knife, Wang Baole switched to Taiji Fist and forced Wuming to reveal his strongest techniques 107 111 112.
Both fighters were badly injured, but Wang Baole collapsed before delivering his final punch. Wuming remained conscious through the referee’s count and won. Wang Baole recovered after receiving fasting pills and demon beast meat, explaining that his final technique had consumed so much spiritual power that he fainted from hunger. He ultimately placed third and chose to remain at the Miscellaneous Dao Institute rather than join another institute 113 129.
Great Void Secret Realm and the Wang Clan Return
During the Great Void expedition, Wang Yulin publicly belittled Wang Baole and denied that she was his wife. Nangong Yu and her companions intervened against her group. Wang Baole subsequently told Wang Yulin that he would end their engagement, while maintaining that his debt was to the Wang Clan rather than to her personally 127 130.
Inside the secret realm, Wang Baole and Nangong Yu discovered Dragon-Tail Fish, an underground spirit river, and a cavern inhabited by Taisui. The Crimson Taisui offered them a one-day eating trial, allowing them to take away Taisui equal in size to the meat they consumed 140.
Wang Baole later returned to the Wang Clan with his fellow disciples for the patriarch’s birthday. He presented a thousand-year-old Azure Fruit and revealed that Chu Feng was a Half-Saint, overturning the clan’s assumptions about his achievements. With his senior brothers’ support, he dissolved his engagement to Wang Yulin and requested Wang Yufei’s hand instead 155 158 159.
He spared the relatives who had mistreated him out of gratitude to the clan and its patriarch, but warned that further offenses against him or Wang Yufei would not be forgiven 160.
Heavenly Saber Manor Campaign
Mo Yu revealed that Wang Baole descended from Heavenly Saber Manor’s legitimate line and asked him to help reclaim its position. Wang Baole promised to avenge his grandfather but refused to inherit the manor, declaring that his ambitions extended beyond it 210.
Following Chu Feng’s advice to draw on outside help, Wang Baole sought support through Nangong Yu and Wang Yufei. He also gave Mo Yu a thousand-year-old spiritual herb and a Saint-grade saber technique, then lent him the saint saber Startling Silence before battle 211 214.
Wang Baole led the combined Dao-Seeking Academy, Great Yu, and Wang Clan forces to Heavenly Saber Manor. While Mo Yu fought Mo Wuxin, Wang Baole defeated Mo Li with fist techniques and his firewood cleaver; Mo Li’s fleeing divine soul subsequently crumbled. Mo Yu returned victorious from his own duel 214 216.
Later Expeditions
During the royal-court expedition, Wang Baole explored a manor with Han Ping, subdued Mandala and Mysterious Moon Fungus, and ordered them to provide a map. He turned much of the manor’s accumulated resources into ingredients, reaching Spirit Nurturing Fifth Layer before leaving 294 296 305.
He later countered a strike from the Ten Thousand Buddhas Great Formation with a taiji diagram and entered it alongside other academy disciples. On another expedition, he and Ye Beixuan discovered Xue Wentian conducting a blood ritual 365 411.
Wang Baole also received an invitation to the God of Cooking competition in Unrivaled City; Chu Feng approved his participation 442.
Northern Jade Mountain and Dao Comprehension
Determined to comprehend the True Essence of the Great Dao, Wang Baole pursued an opportunity connected to the ancient Taotie Demon Saint. His fellow disciples readily offered to accompany him 549 550.
At Northern Jade Mountain, he killed the Black Dragon Army’s seventh deputy commander with a single use of the Wood-Chopping Saber Technique. After reuniting with his wives, he led a growing group of academy disciples toward the mountain’s core to seek Taotie essence blood. He also confronted Senior Sister Hong of the Emotion-Forsaking Palace after her group insulted Wang Yufei 554 555 556.
After returning with the essence blood, Wang Baole followed Chu Feng’s guidance: first perfecting Saber Intent, then using it together with Taiji True Intent to withstand and absorb the blood’s destructive presence. He comprehended the Great Dao of Devouring and returned to share the achievement with his master. Asked about his future, he said he wanted to make all kinds of delicious food 563 564.
Appearance
- Build: A round-bellied, chubby young man, frequently addressed as “Little Fatty” 100 305 556.
- Early traveling attire: Ordinary clothes rather than academy outer-disciple robes, with a conspicuous firewood cleaver strapped to his back 102.
- Combat presence: His friendly-looking appearance contrasts sharply with his killing intent; when activating his physique, he gives observers the impression of an ancient savage beast 556.
Personality
Years of living under another family’s roof made Wang Baole highly sensitive to expressions and social cues. His initial cheerfulness concealed insecurity, particularly around Wang Yulin, whom he habitually accommodated even after becoming an academy disciple 70 127.
His love of food drives both his cultivation and his ambitions. He eagerly studies culinary methods, practices diligently, and aspires to become a Culinary Saint. Food can matter more to him than money: when approached about buying a meal, he asks for food rather than spirit stones 73 103.
As his confidence grows, he becomes outspoken, teasing, and willing to confront former bullies. He nevertheless distinguishes gratitude from submission, preserving his ties to the Wang Clan while refusing further mistreatment 130 156 160.
Wang Baole is deeply attached to his master, fellow disciples, grandfather, and wives. He is moved by his fellow disciples’ offers of help and refuses to back down when his wives are threatened. His desire to match his senior disciples eventually gives way to a quieter satisfaction in cooking itself 211 550 556 564.
