History

Village Life and Meeting Shen Ge

Han Yu grew up in an impoverished household whose savings had been exhausted by Han Lin’s illness. When the nearly naked Shen Ge entered Sea Village seeking clothes, she brought him home despite the villagers’ gossip. Her kindness also had a practical motive: seeing his basket of medicinal herbs, she hoped he could examine her brother 14 15 17 23.

When Han Wu threatened to strike her, Han Yu insisted that she had done nothing wrong. She also gathered Shen Ge’s belongings after her father kicked over his basket and challenged him for mistreating someone else’s property 16.

Although she wanted Han Lin cured, she opposed Shen Ge entering the dangerous, miasma-filled forest on his behalf. She supplied food and water for his journey and anxiously awaited his overdue return. After he cured Han Lin, she made Shen Ge a new set of clothes and gave them to him before his departure 17 21 22 23.

Education Under Su Du

A Detoxification Pill made by Shen Ge brought Han Yu into contact with Su Du, the commandery princess of Qinghe, in a town in Kaohai Commandery. Su Du took her away from village life and provided money for her family 74 105.

Su Du taught her reading, writing, commerce, government, warfare, martial arts, etiquette, and social dealings. Their relationship developed into a close sisterly bond rather than that of mistress and servant. Three years and three months after leaving home, Han Yu accepted responsibility for Su Du’s three restaurants in Tianyuan City 74 123.

Overthrow of the Hundred Flowers Kingdom

Han Yu later directed an extensive network in the Hundred Flowers Kingdom. By the time she reviewed its progress at All Under Heaven Pavilion, it had infiltrated more than half the kingdom and acquired land and grain businesses. Working toward Su Du’s nine-year deadline, she identified the army as the principal obstacle to taking control 99.

She cut grain supplies and encouraged unrest, triggering famine and rebellion. Her original plan depended on the emperor attacking merchants, allowing her network to restrict necessities further and destroy the court’s legitimacy. Emperor Li Shi instead confiscated corrupt officials’ and aristocratic clans’ wealth to purchase relief grain, forcing her to reassess him 101.

Han Yu prepared grain purchased in the Flowing Cloud Kingdom, summoned a thousand deathsworn, and arranged to portray Su Du as the person bringing peace. Their campaign culminated in the founding of the Phoenix Kingdom. During the suppression of opposition, Han Yu personally shot an outspoken opponent through the head 101 102.

Founding the Fortune Dynasty

When Shen Ge visited Phoenix City, Han Yu thanked him for the encounter that had changed her fate. She also admitted that millions had died because of her actions. After he urged her to govern for the people rather than dwell only on guilt, she promised to remember his advice 105.

At the Heaven-Worship Ceremony, Han Yu held the rank of side-by-side king and gained Foundation Establishment Early Stage power through the Fortune Dynasty Method. The disappearance of her white hair renewed her confidence that she could approach Shen Ge as an equal. Soon afterward, however, she overheard him saying that he did not love her 107 108.

Recognizing that fortune-derived strength needed a stable foundation, Han Yu and Su Du proposed an academy for talented cultivators. Han Yu welcomed protection from the Spirit Moon Sect while insisting that it not interfere with imperial authority. She requested basic cultivation books and Spirit Root testing items 111.

Su Du’s Death and Succession

When Huang Tao grievously wounded Shen Ge, Han Yu rushed toward him on a flying sword and attempted to shield him with her body. Su Du pursued her, pushed her out of the sword light’s path, and died protecting her. Before dying, Su Du named Han Yu the Phoenix Kingdom’s next empress 120.

Han Yu caught Shen Ge and carried him toward the palace despite being wounded by the Ghost King’s yin wind. She also witnessed the Ghost King devour Su Du’s body. Afterward, she painstakingly separated the few ashes she could identify as Su Du’s from a larger mass of remains 120 122.

The loss transformed her understanding of her attachments. She told Shen Ge that Su Du—not her long-standing longing for him—had been the most important person in her life. Rejecting his offer of marriage as repayment for saving him, she instead requested the Spirit Moon Sect’s support in bringing the Flowing Cloud Kingdom and nearby kingdoms under Phoenix rule 123.

Consolidating Her Rule

Han Yu surrendered the Fortune Dynasty Method to Shen Ge during negotiations between the righteous and devil factions. In return, she demanded protection for herself and her dynasty; the Righteous Path Alliance also promised resources. The method subsequently became part of the agreement ending hostilities 135.

Under her reign, the palace library grew to at least 300,000 books, including 10,000 martial arts texts. The kingdom had also trained a hundred Qi Refining cultivators 164.

Han Yu supported efforts to develop Martial Dao beyond its existing limits and reached the Wolf Smoke Realm herself. She directed resources toward the pioneers, sent newly advanced practitioners against rogue cultivators who had robbed kingdom supplies, and sought opportunities to gain the support needed for a Spirit Severing breakthrough 216.

When other cultivators demanded the Martial Dao advancement method, she prepared to share it and invited Wang Yan as a precaution against hostile infiltrators. Although established powers refused to facilitate her rise to Spirit Severing, Han Yu remained confident that she would outlast the rival Blood Flame and Autumn Leaf Dynasties 220.

She later ordered the Qianyu Army to eradicate temples accused of sheltering criminals and exploiting the populace, while authorizing other armies to march north. She considered delay dangerous because rival states were trying to organize resistance to Phoenix expansion 244.

Remaining in the Heavenly South

By the time cultivators began leaving through the Ice and Snow Plateau, Han Yu possessed Spirit Severing strength and could open the formation for them. She invited Shen Ge to join an expedition, but he declined until he had reached Nascent Soul 260 261.

Before Shen Ge’s eventual departure, she agreed to protect the Spirit Moon Sect while its new generation developed. She asked him to revive her and Su Du if he ever became an immortal. Their conversation also acknowledged the failure of the Martial Dao pioneers to advance beyond Wolf Smoke: Wan Feng and the others had died without opening the next stage 268.

Han Yu opened the formation for Shen Ge’s party and remained behind in the Heavenly South. In a later encounter, she granted the Mermaid Race a lake as refuge, assigned them coastal defense duties, and gave Ao Xi supplies and a letter to carry onward 268 317.

Appearance

Han Yu’s appearance changes markedly with age and advancement 74 105 107 216.

  • Youth: Petite and shapely; wears brocade while traveling with Su Du 74.
  • Middle age: Still beautiful well into her forties, with strands of white in her black hair and a refined bearing 105.
  • Rejuvenation: Loses her white hair upon receiving fortune-derived power; later regains a young woman’s appearance during her Wolf Smoke breakthrough 107 216.
  • Clothing: Frequently wears red gowns or official robes; as empress, appears in a phoenix robe 99 107 317.
  • Bearing: Develops an imposing presence, expressed through domineering spear intent and the restrained authority of a ruler 216 317.

Personality

Initially shy and easily embarrassed, Han Yu is nevertheless willing to oppose unjust treatment. She defends her decision to help Shen Ge and rejects her brother’s distinction between “rustic villagers” and exalted cultivators, asking whether they are not all people 16 23.

Her education under Su Du makes her decisive, calculating, and politically ruthless. She uses commercial control, intelligence networks, coercion, and rebellion to dismantle a kingdom, yet remains troubled by the enormous human cost of her success. She is also skeptical of relationships purchased through favors, believing military commanders will abandon them when expedient 99 101 105.

Her longing for Shen Ge contains both insecurity and possessiveness. After Su Du’s death, she questions whether that attachment was love or an inability to accept something denied to her in youth. Grief leaves her colder and more volatile, but she refuses a marriage offered out of obligation 106 107 123.

As empress, she combines patience with absolute confidence in her eventual victory. She is willing to wait for political opportunities, share valuable methods when useful, and seek allies without surrendering imperial independence 111 216 220.

Abilities & Skills

Fortune Dynasty Method

Uses national fortune to obtain cultivation power and support the dynasty’s development 107 216.

  • Initially raises her directly to Foundation Establishment Early Stage 107.
  • Makes her formidable within the Phoenix Kingdom; Song Junjie states that he previously could not defeat her there while she had the kingdom’s fortune supporting her 216.
  • Depends on a foundation Han Yu herself considers vulnerable, motivating her effort to train cultivators through an academy 111.
  • The kingdom’s fortune later manifests as a small, flame-wreathed phoenix seen perched on her shoulder 260.

Martial Dao and Spearmanship

Cultivates Martial Dao alongside her existing cultivation and wields a spear with domineering intent 216.

  • At Wolf Smoke, possesses physical strength of at least several thousand jin and can split stone barehanded 216.
  • Produces a blood-colored dragon around her spear without using cultivation power 216.
  • Demonstrates martial strength comparable to Foundation Establishment; Song Junjie judges that she could potentially kill a cultivator of that realm 216.
  • Limit: The Martial Dao breakthrough does not itself grant flight. Song Junjie identifies aerial and ranged attacks as major vulnerabilities of the path 216.
  • Development limit: The pioneers fail to establish a stage beyond Wolf Smoke during their lifetimes 268.

Spirit Severing Power

Demonstrates overwhelming superiority to Nascent Soul cultivators through a restrained phoenix-shaped attack 261.

  • Shatters a large section of the Ice and Snow Plateau formation with one attack 261.
  • Repeats the feat to enable Shen Ge’s departure 268.
  • Later vanishes from the imperial palace and appears on the South Sea coast in a flash of fire 317.

  • Shen Ge — Her brother’s healer, an early benefactor, and the object of decades of unrequited affection. Their bond survives rejection and grief; she retains the Heaven-Pacifying King title Su Du gave him 22 108 123.
  • Han Lin — Elder brother. His illness motivates her to seek Shen Ge’s help, while his concern for her reputation initially causes conflict 15 17.
