History
Origins and Ancestral Sect
The Spirit Moon Sect originated outside the Southern Barbarian Lands. During the war over the Fortune Dynasty Method, Qingshan states that it has been established in the region for less than a thousand years. Zi Nü alludes to its former glory with the words, “Beneath the starry sky of the ages, only the Spirit Moon is eternal” 134.
Venerable Yaoguang identifies it as a branch of a sect in Heaven’s Edge Domain. Li Yuxin later recalls that its parent organization is the Star Sea Bright Moon Sect, from which it separated an unknown number of tens of thousands of years earlier 237 274.
Accounts of its distant history describe a mass ascension: an envoy mentions ten immortals ascending in one day, while Yaoguang’s account gives more than a dozen. Neither account establishes the founding date of the Heavenly South settlement 172 237.
War with the Devil Creek Sect
The Spirit Moon Sect and Devil Creek Sect competed for the scarce resources of the Flowing Cloud Kingdom. Although the nearby sea offered additional resources, its dangers encouraged both sides to fight over land instead. By the opening chapters, their war had lasted three years, with major fronts at Fallen Phoenix Slope, Wind Mountain, and the Verdant Sea 2.
Initially, Golden Core cultivators largely supervised while disciples fought. Spirit Moon then escalated the conflict at the Verdant Sea: Li Hai led a Golden Core force in an encirclement, sealing the battlefield with a grand formation before attacking the enemy camp 2 6 8.
The sect’s disciples cleared the Verdant Sea of Devil Cultivators after roughly five double-hours, suffering far fewer casualties than in earlier fighting. The wider war ended with the Devil Creek Sect shattered and only three to five senior figures escaping; Spirit Moon lost ten Golden Core cultivators 11 12.
More than a decade afterward, cultivators reported that Spirit Moon was temporarily relaxing its recruitment requirements to replace its losses 28.
East Approach Secret Realm
Ziyang sent elite Foundation Establishment disciples into the East Approach Secret Realm under Shangguan Ouyang and Jin Yun. Participation was voluntary, with Ziyang explicitly allowing unwilling disciples to withdraw 52.
The expedition suffered a disaster after Meng Yan of Yellow Maple Valley provoked a Thunder Eagle and stole its egg. Qin Yu stayed behind to confront the pursuing beast, while Wang Yan used Wei Sen’s array disc to evacuate fifteen survivors. Qin Yu burned his lifespan to raise his strength temporarily to Golden Core Early Stage; his death is confirmed in later accounts 58 63 315.
Jin Yun subsequently remained at Yellow Maple Valley demanding satisfaction for his disciple’s death. The Evergreen Sect sought compensation and worked to prevent the dispute from becoming a war between righteous sects 78 81.
Evergreen Sect Exchange
Ziyang personally led a hundred-member delegation to the Evergreen Sect to strengthen relations. The gathering included artifact refining, alchemy, talisman, and formation competitions 85 88 91.
Spirit Moon failed to place in the top three in either talismans or formations. Wei Sen’s death had left the Formation Hall without a disciple capable of matching his role. Despite the competitive results, the gathering maintained friendly contact between the sects’ disciples and leaders 91 95.
War with the Hehuan Sect
Spirit Moon became involved with the Phoenix Kingdom after the emergence of the Fortune Dynasty Method. Wang Yan, Mu Wan, and Su Sui arrived offering protection; Su Sui’s family connection to ruler Su Du helped establish a cordial reception 111.
When war broke out between the righteous and demonic paths, the Hehuan Sect advanced against Spirit Moon despite the distance between their territories. Spirit Moon established a defensive line three hundred li long, with sentries approximately every ten li, and assembled five flying boats at Heavenly Heart Ravine 124 126.
The first clash left hundreds dead on each side before the fighting settled into smaller engagements. Xuanguang instructed Ziyang and Mo Qingyu not to pursue retreating Nascent Soul enemies: the sect’s objective was to contain the Hehuan Sect rather than exhaust its limited resources 130 131.
As the war continued, Wang Yan distributed five hundred Golden Body Talismans drawn by Su Liuyue to the disciples 134.
Shen Ge’s Estrangement
After returning from his apparent death, Shen Ge entered the sect seeking Zhang Sheng. His arrival over Azure Jade Peak drew the Golden Core experts of the various peaks and halls. The revelation that Zhang Sheng had killed Mu Wan enraged members of the Artifact Refining Hall, Wang Yan, Chu He, and Mo Qingyu 140 143.
Shen Ge subsequently left the sect, although his master did not agree to his departure. Their dispute resurfaced at the Sea Demon Sect ruins, where Shangguan Ouyang and six companions attempted to secure a divine pill. After Shen Ge interfered, the Pill Hall elder demanded punishment for destroying a sixth-grade Moon Spirit Pill and attacking Wang 146 154 160.
Ziyang later prohibited the spread of information about Shen Ge’s Samsara Method. He feared Xuanguang would attempt to seize it and that Mo Qingyu would rebel in response 162.
Departure from the Heavenly South
Before leaving the Heavenly South, Shen Ge asked Han Yu to protect the Spirit Moon Sect. Wang Yan and the others settled the sect’s affairs and entrusted it to a new-generation disciple before departing 268.
Outside the Heavenly South, Mo Qingyu proposed establishing another Spirit Moon Sect. The group eventually settled among green mountains and a peach grove supported by two small Spirit Veins. Their settlement, Peach Blossom Spring Mountain, gained a reputation through combat over the following decade 270 271 277.
A later confrontation at Spirit Moon Peak ended with Ziyang choosing death rather than betraying his master. Shen Ge restrained the enraged former elders, including Shangguan Ouyang, rather than fight them, citing their past ties 332.
Clear Wave Island
The later Spirit Moon Sect was established on Clear Wave Island in Earth Marsh. Through Mo Qingyu’s membership in the Heavenly River Limitless Sect, it obtained that sect’s protection while retaining considerable independence 357.
Its current sect master is an unnamed woman at Nascent Soul Late Stage. She was one of the children once captured by the Blood Devil Grotto and was personally taught by Zhang Fengge. Recruitment continues: the strongest recruit from an intake three years earlier, a girl with a single high-grade Water Spirit Root, has reached the Ninth Layer of Qi Refinement 359.

Techniques and Resources
Battle Formations
- Four Spirits Heaven-Trapping Formation — Encloses the Verdant Sea battlefield. Old Man Wuya recognizes similarities to his Four Symbols Formation, though its arrangement and materials differ 8 9.
- Five Elements Eight Trigrams Formation / Five Elements Grand Formation — Operated by Elder Lu and four other Golden Core cultivators. Its attacks include a sea of fire and Bone-Eroding Rain 9.

Sword Arts and Instruction
- Ten Thousand Swords Technique — Shangguan Ouyang creates a torrent of golden sword shadows during the Verdant Sea battle 8.

- Gale Escape Technique — Available through the scripture repository. At its first level, Shen Ge can travel two li in an instant 51.
- Divine Sword Technique — A spiritual-sense sword attack practiced by Shen Ge. It can temper spiritual sense, but attacking a stronger opponent risks backlash 51.
Assets
- Flying ships and boats — Used for troop deployment, secret-realm expeditions, diplomatic travel, and battle formations 8 52 85 126.
- Sand Copper mine — A coastal resource site near the bay where Shen Ge and Mu Wan hunt a Tide Crab 41.
