Background / History

Artifact Refining Hall

Mu Wan grew up in the Spirit Moon Sect as the granddaughter of Qingyou, the Artifact Refining Hall’s master. Liu Xiao describes her as the hall’s “little princess,” spoiled by its members. Her grandfather’s support gives her access to free or subsidized refining materials, allowing her to accumulate far more Law Artifacts and Spirit Stones than Shen Ge 40 49.

She meets Shen Ge when Liu Xiao introduces him at the hall. Their acquaintance quickly becomes a partnership involving artifact refining, material gathering, and frequent teasing 40 41 43.

South Sea Incidents

After reaching Foundation Establishment, Mu Wan recruits Shen Ge to deal with a Tide Crab threatening the sect’s coastal Sand Copper mine, offering to divide the refining materials equally. She pilots their flying boat during the fight and ultimately kills the crab with a Soul-Losing Gall 41 42.

The wounded deep-sea creature’s appearance in shallow water later becomes evidence of a deliberate trap. Mu Wan brings Shen Ge news of two disciples’ deaths, then reports that the five-person enforcement squad sent to investigate has also been killed. At the ensuing meeting, she connects the displaced beasts and their injuries to the ambushes 43 44 45.

Changliu Market and Sect Exchanges

Mu Wan travels with Shen Ge to Changliu Market, spending most of her Spirit Stones on refining materials before selling Law Artifacts to raise three thousand Spirit Stones for the auction. They also watch the Wan Household’s marriage tournament and witness Tang Yu’s victories and Shen Ge’s wager with Huang Tao 49 52 55.

During the Evergreen Sect exchange, she obtains Crimson Gold Copper using ten thousand Spirit Stones supplied by Shen Ge. She enters the artifact-refining competition and produces a folding fan, but does not place among the top three. She subsequently participates in the group battle against the Evergreen Sect 86 88 90 91.

Unspoken Feelings

Mu Wan and Shen Ge’s relationship develops over nearly forty years without either formally acknowledging it. Shen Ge eventually tells Han Yu that he likes Mu Wan. Su Sui explains that his damaged sea of consciousness makes him reluctant to burden her, while Mu Wan fears that confessing would lead him to reject and distance himself from her 123 124.

After the Phoenix Kingdom crisis, Mu Wan asks whether Shen Ge intends to remain in Phoenix City. He leaves without answering, and she is visibly distressed. Wang Yan later urges him to resolve their relationship rather than leave Mu Wan waiting indefinitely 122 123.

Sea Demon Sect Expedition

Mu Wan pieces together the location of the long-lost Sea Demon Sect from ancient books, including records obtained from the Evergreen Sect and Yellow Maple Valley. She spends her entire fortune preparing three thousand talismans and leaves alone for the South Sea to search for its ruins 133.

Her expedition takes her through waters inhabited by increasingly dangerous Demon Beasts. After narrowly escaping a Golden Core Stage Devil Shark, her blood accidentally activates a hidden teleportation formation on an island. It transports her into the Sea Demon Sect’s secret realm 133 135.

Inside, she defeats a regenerating water puppet with a mass talisman attack and Flash of Spirit Light, suffering grievous injuries in the process. A sea-demon token appears to mark her passage of the disciple trial, allowing her to proceed deeper into the ruins 135.

Death

After ten days of searching, Shen Ge catches Mu Wan as she falls from a vortex. Her chest and abdomen have been cut open, her right arm is missing, and part of her left leg has been severed. Despite his efforts to administer medicine, she cannot be saved 136.

Mu Wan kisses his cheek and gives him a jade box containing a Spirit Severing Pill. Shen Ge asks her to become his dao companion, but she instead offers her final farewell and dies in his arms. He then sees her spirit slowly dissipating 136.

Zhang Sheng arrives afterward, steals Shen Ge’s Storage Bag, destroys Mu Wan’s corpse, and kills Shen Ge when he attacks in grief 136.

Appearance

  • Face: Introduced as a sweet-looking girl; later descriptions note her fair cheeks and delicate lips 40 122 136.
  • Clothing: Wears a pale green robe at her introduction, white boots during an encounter at her cave abode, and a long yellow dress during the Phoenix Kingdom visit 40 79 111.
  • Later description: Han Yu calls her very beautiful when asking Shen Ge about the woman dressed in white 123.

Personality

Mu Wan is mischievous, proud, and quick-tempered. She trades insults with Shen Ge, retaliates physically when embarrassed, and remembers slights. After realizing that Li Xue is trying to coax out her artifact-refining knowledge, she privately resolves to repay the trick 40 79 86.

Her privileged upbringing sometimes makes her dismissive of smaller sects and their disciples. Nevertheless, she understands the danger of careless speech: she conceals her disdain and uses voice transmission when criticizing the Wan Household on its own territory 52 53.

She is competitive about both cultivation and refining. Being decisively defeated by Shen Ge pushes her to stop their casual sparring and work seriously toward another breakthrough 100.

Her affection often appears beneath threats and arguments over money. When Shen Ge is injured, she offers to avenge him and supplies replacement high-grade Law Artifacts. Later, she promises to help find a remedy for his condition. Her persistence culminates in continuing the Sea Demon Sect expedition despite dwindling resources, dangerous beasts, and serious wounds 80 111 133 135.

Abilities & Skills

Artifact Refining

Mu Wan can refine supreme-grade Law Artifacts after specializing in the craft for only a little over ten years, an achievement described as exceptionally gifted 95.

  • Can work with almost any material below Law Treasure level 87.
  • Her craftsmanship can at least double the value of purchased refining materials 87.
  • Produces a folding fan during the Evergreen Sect competition rather than following the majority in making flying swords 88 90.
  • Does not place among the competition’s top three, which are Jin Ling, Liu Tao, and Wang Hua 90.

Offensive Techniques

Mu Wan uses both direct techniques and powerful consumable items in combat 41 42 79 135.

  • Giant sword attack: Forms hand seals to summon a large sword against the Tide Crab; its narrow coverage fails to draw the submerged beast out 41.
  • Fire-wreathed blows: Coats her fists in faint flames, scorching Shen Ge while deliberately holding back 79.
  • Flash of Spirit Light: Releases a sharp white flash that cleaves the Sea Demon Sect’s water puppet in two. Combined with exploding talismans, it prevents the puppet from reforming; wounds burst open across her body during the attack 135.

Talismans and Explosive Firepower

Mu Wan treats powerful equipment as a legitimate part of her strength, rejecting Shen Ge’s suggestion that their spars should exclude it 57.

  • Kills the heavily armored Tide Crab with a fist-sized Soul-Losing Gall 42.
  • Uses Golden Body, Windwalking, and Qi Gathering Talismans to support her South Sea expedition 133.
  • Overwhelms the water puppet with a rain of talismans alongside her own technique 135.
  • Is frustrated during the Evergreen Sect group battle when she cannot use the Law Artifacts and talismans she believes would let her defeat Yue Shan 93.

Observation and Research

Mu Wan has extensive experience watching cultivator battles and can reconstruct historical clues from scattered records 52 133.

  • Predicts a tournament fighter’s defeat after having watched at least five hundred comparable matches 52.
  • Identifies the Tide Crab’s abdominal wound and notices that it is approaching the third tier 41.
  • Cross-references ancient books to narrow the Sea Demon Sect’s location to an offshore search area 133.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Soul-Losing Gall — Explosive bead used to kill the Tide Crab and recover its materials 42.
  • Law Artifact stockpile — Possesses low-, mid-, and high-grade artifacts, selling some to finance purchases. Later supplies Shen Ge with high-grade replacements valued at five thousand Spirit Stones 49 80.
  • Storage Bags — Uses one for materials and equipment; gives Shen Ge a pink Storage Bag with the replacement artifacts 49 80.
  • Golden Body Talismans — Receives half of those Su Liuyue gives Shen Ge; also uses this talisman type during her expedition 57 133.
  • Crimson Gold Copper — Acquires it for ten thousand Spirit Stones paid by Shen Ge, promising to repay him gradually 86.
  • Three thousand expedition talismans — Purchased at the cost of her entire fortune before departing for the South Sea 133.
  • Sea-demon token — Awarded after she passes the secret realm’s disciple trial 135.
  • Spirit Severing Pill — Returns from the secret realm carrying it in a jade box and gives it to Shen Ge before her death 136.

Relationships

  • Qingyou — Grandfather and principal source of her privileged access to refining resources. After her death, Shen Ge kneels at Qingyou’s tomb for three days to apologize 40 49 143.
  • Shen Ge — Fellow disciple, refining companion, debtor, and mutual romantic interest. Their long-unspoken attachment ends with his proposal at her deathbed; they are not shown formally becoming dao companions 51 59 123 124 136.
  • Su Sui — Calls her “Martial Aunt Mu Wan” and repeatedly champions a match between her and Shen Ge. Mu Wan also looks after her while Shen Ge is away 79 111 114.
  • Su Liuyue — Senior sister whom Mu Wan respects and invokes when trying to restrain Shen Ge’s gambling. Sends Mu Wan to help test the young Su Sui’s Spirit Root 53 62.
  • Wang Yan — Caring senior sister who had considered preparing Foundation Establishment Pills for her; later urges Shen Ge to give their relationship a clear resolution 44 123.
  • Liu Xiao — Senior brother who introduces her to Shen Ge, jokes with her, and encourages her cultivation 40.
  • Jin Ling — Senior sister whose protection Mu Wan invokes when threatening Liu Xiao 40.
  • Zhang Sheng — Destroys her corpse and kills Shen Ge after her death, becoming the immediate target of Shen Ge’s revenge 136 143.

Posthumous Story Role

Shen Ge’s Grief and Revenge

Mu Wan’s death becomes a lasting source of grief and a barrier to reconciliation between Shen Ge and the Spirit Moon Sect. He leaves the sect after mourning at Qingyou’s grave and later severs his master-disciple relationship with Mo Qingyu when she opposes his determination to kill her master over Mu Wan’s death 143 163.

His mourning persists long afterward. He remembers the unpaid debt he owes her at an auction, then spends two years carving thirteen hundred wooden figures of her. His inability to summon further memories contributes to a breakdown and a Heart Devil Tribulation 183 241.

Su Liuyue eventually encourages him to become an immortal capable of reviving Mu Wan. On returning to the sect, he revisits places associated with her, including the Mountain-Viewing Pavilion. Much later, he remains determined to find her soul before it disappears into heaven and earth, rejecting warnings that the pursuit is becoming an obsession 258 348.

Bai Lili’s Fabricated Memories

Bai Lili incorporates Mu Wan into an artificial history imposed on Shen Ge across reincarnations. In this version, Mu Wan becomes more like a younger sister, dies in a staged war while Shen Ge protects the wounded Bai Lili, and is later avenged by him. These events belong to the fabricated memories, not Mu Wan’s actual history 167.
