The following milestones document Fang Yu’s establishment and subsequent development of Dao Foundations.

Cultivation Mechanics

Dao Attainment

A Dao Foundation cannot be established through accumulated cultivation alone. It requires Dao Attainment: comprehension of the rules of heaven and earth gained through pursuing the Dao 11.

• Established cultivation lineages provide practical activities through which this comprehension can be accumulated 11.
• Molten Edge Flow develops through working metal and stone, including the repeated forging of Metal Fire Stones and flying swords 12 48.
• Phoenix Sets the Plains Ablaze requires the Fire of Ten Thousand Households, gathered from the mortal world, to increase its Dao Attainment 39.
• Spiritual Qi and Spirit Stones cannot compensate for insufficient Dao Attainment; without it, cultivation on the Dao of Qi Ingestion stalls 48.

Heavenly Recognition

Sufficient Dao Attainment is necessary, but recognition from the corresponding Heavenly Dao rules is also required 169.

• The powers of Qi Ingestion methods depend on rules governed by their corresponding Golden Positions. Advancement functions as authorization from those rules 169.
• Fang Yu can accumulate relevant Dao Attainment in Great Scarlet Heaven, but must return to the Black-Yellow Realm to establish a Dao Foundation or advance its power into a Divine Ability 60 169.
• His failed attempt to establish Phoenix Sets the Plains Ablaze in Great Scarlet Heaven occurs despite having sufficient Dao Attainment 60.

Choosing and Changing a Foundation

A cultivator’s first ingested breath of Spiritual Qi and initial cultivation method determine their subsequent Dao path. Established Dao Foundations cannot ordinarily be exchanged for another 24.

• Heavenly One Life Water can dissolve a foundation and permit cultivation anew. Wu Tong describes it as a legendary treasure beyond the resources of Purple Mansion aristocratic clans 24.
• Fang Yu’s exception: the Yuanchen Pearl allows him to dissolve his Law Power and Dao Foundation and change cultivation methods without that treasure 24.
• Obtaining an introductory method does not guarantee access to its higher inheritance. A foundation may leave its practitioner dependent on a major sect—or searching for the remnants of an extinct lineage 24 38.

Effects and Abilities

Lifespan and Physical Cultivation

• Fang Yu’s Dao Foundation breakthrough increases his lifespan by one hundred years 51.
• His later Foundation Establishment breakthrough grants another hundred years, confirming that the two increases can stack in his case 51.
• The Dao of Qi Ingestion cultivates essence, Qi, and spirit together, strengthening the body alongside cultivation. Fang Yu’s years of smithing additionally give him toughness comparable to a body cultivator 51.

Specialized Wondrous Powers

Dao Foundations grant powers specific to their cultivation paths; they are not uniformly designed for combat 12 20 25.

• Molten Edge Flow makes its practitioner a living forge, greatly accelerating the processing of metal and stone without requiring earth fire 12.
• Fang Yu uses its mystical power to engrave optimized array patterns and later to dismantle and refine materials for a lifebound Law Treasure 64 107.
• Phoenix Sets the Plains Ablaze can stir existing desires and induce irrational behavior, but requires its targets to possess desires that can be stirred 60.
• Even Fang Yu’s smithing-oriented Molten Edge Flow lets him easily kill three Late Qi Refining cultivators, though he remains uncertain how it would perform against a Foundation Establishment opponent 29.

Spirit Root Improvement

• Establishing Phoenix Sets the Plains Ablaze raises Fang Yu’s Spirit Root from low-grade to Fire Element Mid-Grade, increasing his Qi Refining cultivation speed 65.
• After Molten Edge Flow becomes a Divine Ability, his Spirit Root improves again to high-grade 167.

Documented Dao Foundations

Advancement to Purple Mansion

A Dao Foundation’s wondrous power develops into a Divine Ability at the Purple Mansion level 60 101.

Molten Edge Flow

• Its complete inheritance extends beyond smithing to External Alchemy, encompassing pills, talismans, arrays, and artifact refining 105.
• The Divine Ability can refine metal, stone, spirit medicines, flesh, blood, souls, and spectral soldiers into “external pills” 105.
• Fang Yu learns that these four arts accumulate the Dao Attainment required for advancement. By the time all four reach the fourth tier, he is ready to return to the Black-Yellow Realm and forge a heaven-grade Dao artifact 105 161.
• His eventual breakthrough involves sacrificing Moon-Embracing Sword Immortal. He later distinguishes a divine weapon, containing a sacrificed Purple Mansion cultivator’s Divine Ability, from an ordinary Spirit Treasure 162 163.

Phoenix Sets the Plains Ablaze

• Heavenly lightning corrects flaws and hidden backdoors in Fang Yu’s Starfire Heart-Burning Instruction and directs him west to seek his Purple Mansion opportunity 101.
• Wondrous Goodness Heavenly Maiden’s teaching about the lights of ten thousand households supplies the insight that transforms his foundation into a Nirvana Pure Land 123.

Role in the Metal Stone Immortal Sect

The Metal Stone Immortal Sect uses Molten Edge Flow to train Fire Virtue workers while its ruling Tie Household concentrates on Metal Virtue sword cultivation. Non-Tie practitioners receive no subsequent method beyond Early Dao Foundation, leaving the Heavenly Craft lineage dependent on the sect despite their elder status 24 25.

Sword cultivators sponsor aspiring external alchemists by supplying practice materials in exchange for their breakthrough sword. Tie Feng explains that this sword receives a substantial quality increase, reaching at least middle quality and potentially high or top quality 11.

Fang Yu’s sponsorship conceals a blood-sacrifice scheme. Forging technically perfect swords brings him only to Quasi-Dao Foundation; completing Molten Edge Flow requires sacrificing himself or another person. He survives by killing Tie Chanyi, and later recognizes that the sect had guided him toward becoming material for a sword 22 23 29.
