Background / History
Tang San has lived two lives. In his previous life, he belonged to the Tang Sect, whose cultivation system differed from that of the Douluo Continent. He retains knowledge of its hidden weapons, movement techniques, and medicinal records 1 19 23 24.
At his introduction, Tang San is traveling with Shrek’s teachers and students after their expulsion from Heaven Dou Royal Academy. The group intends to seek positions at Blue Tyrant Academy. He and Xiao Wu have spent years together, developing romantic feelings despite referring to each other as siblings 1 6.
Appearance
- Introduced as a boy dressed in blue 1.
- His eyes repeatedly become bloodshot when enraged, accompanied by heavy breathing 1 6 25.
- When he activates the Eight Spider Lances Bone, eight razor-sharp spider legs extend from his back 20.
Personality
Tang San is fiercely protective of Xiao Wu. He confronts Wang Changsheng over his harassment of her, promises to shield her with his life, and continues struggling to reach her even after his restraints rub his wrists bloody. After learning that she has been coerced, he explicitly refuses to abandon or reject her 1 6 7 8.
His confidence initially rests on his combat experience, hidden weapons, and External Soul Bone. Wang Changsheng’s overwhelming strength forces him into reluctant compliance, though threats against Xiao Wu remain an effective way to overcome his resistance 1 6 18 25.
Tang San places deep trust in Yu Xiaogang, choosing to believe his teacher’s promises of future strength unconditionally. He also promises to take Yu Xiaogang to the Divine Realm if he becomes a god 5 19.
His dispute over Dugu Bo’s Immortal Herbs exposes a conflict between his self-image and his conduct. Tang San considers the herbs compensation for treating Dugu Bo, despite no payment having been agreed upon. Wang Changsheng calls this hypocrisy; Tang San maintains that his conscience is clear 24 25.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
One of Tang San’s two Martial Souls, used both in combat and for manipulating objects 1 23.
- First Soul Skill — Blue Silver Entanglement: Sends Blue Silver Grass vines toward a target 1.
- Herb harvesting: Uses vines to cut and retrieve Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass and Infernal Delicate Apricot 23.
- Limit: Wang Changsheng immobilizes his vines, prevents him from withdrawing the skill, and reverses them into his chest 1.
Clear Sky Hammer
Tang San’s second Martial Soul, later publicly identified as evidence of his Twin Martial Souls 8 26.
- Repeatedly strikes Wang Changsheng’s barrier while attempting to reach Xiao Wu 8.
- Uses a two-handed hammer attack against Wang Changsheng after another confrontation over Xiao Wu 9.
- Neither the hammer nor the combined assistance of Shrek’s Soul Skills breaks the barrier 8.
Eight Spider Lances Bone
An External Soul Bone that manifests eight sharp spider legs from Tang San’s back 20.
- Tang San counts it among his advantages against stronger opponents 1.
- Wang Changsheng severs all eight lances, causing pain severe enough to make him lose consciousness 20.
- Wang Changsheng states that the External Soul Bone can regenerate; its recovery is not shown in the supplied events 20.
Tang Sect Techniques
Tang San retains practical knowledge from his previous life 1 19.
- Hidden weapons: Carries throwing knives and Sleeve Arrows, and prepares to draw a hidden weapon when Wang Changsheng attempts to restrain him 6 24.
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Uses this movement technique to escape Dugu Bo’s collapsing cave, but is buried just short of the entrance 24.
- Limit: Recognizes that his available hidden weapons cannot defeat Wang Changsheng 6.
Medicine, Poisons, and Herb Identification
Tang San draws on the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record to recognize rare medicinal plants 23.
- Accurately describes Dugu Bo’s poisoning symptoms and the timing of his attacks 23.
- Claims he can prepare an antidote, persuading Dugu Bo to postpone killing him 23.
- Identifies Cockscomb Phoenix Sunflower, Snow-Colored Swan Kiss, Aromatic Silk Beauty, Lovesick Heartbreak Red, and the two herbs beside the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 23.
- Understands that the Immortal Herbs can improve his foundation, cleanse impurities, raise Soul Power, and accelerate later cultivation 23.
- Proposes using a Soul Bone to contain Dugu Bo’s poison, a method Wang Changsheng later contrasts with his own divine cure 25.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Storage belt / Soul Tool — Holds herbs, stones, throwing knives, Sleeve Arrows, and drawings. Wang Changsheng forcibly empties it 23 24.
- Hidden weapons and drawings — Confiscated from the belt and kicked into the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, where they melt 24.
- Immortal Herbs — Briefly harvests several rare herbs from Dugu Bo’s grounds. Wang Changsheng takes all of them before Tang San can consume the two herbs from beside the well 23 24.
- Trident — Obtains from a storeroom as a prop for Wang Changsheng’s rooftop performance; it is not established as a divine weapon 18.
Relationships
- Xiao Wu — His beloved and self-described younger sister. Their affection is mutual, but Wang Changsheng coerces her and threatens to kill Tang San if she resumes intimate contact with him. Tang San remains willing to stay with her 1 6 8 9.
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher and trusted mentor. Tang San believes in his instruction and promises to bring him to the Divine Realm if he attains godhood 5 19.
- Tang Hao — Father and concealed protector. Rescues him from Dugu Bo and tells him that growing stronger is the only way to reclaim what he has lost 20 26.
- Ah Yin — Mother, whose identity as the Blue Silver Emperor Tang San learns immediately before her resurrection 29.
- Wang Changsheng / Lord Sunlight — Overwhelmingly powerful enemy who repeatedly injures, humiliates, and coerces him, often using Xiao Wu’s safety as leverage 1 6 20 25.
- Dugu Bo — Captor and prospective patient. Their tentative medicinal bargain collapses after Wang Changsheng forces Tang San to claim responsibility for destroying his cave 23 25 26.
- Flender and Liu Erlong — Shrek teachers who treat his injuries and join Yu Xiaogang in pursuing his abductor 20 23 26.
Story Role / Major Arcs
First Confrontation with Wang Changsheng
Tang San intervenes when Wang Changsheng orders Xiao Wu to remove her clothing in public. Confident in his level-34 Soul Power and supplementary techniques, he attacks with Blue Silver Entanglement. Wang Changsheng effortlessly reverses the attack, leaving him coughing blood and unable to rise 1.
The defeat does not diminish his faith in Yu Xiaogang. When his teacher offers assurances that the students can eventually surpass Wang Changsheng, Tang San silently chooses to believe him 5.
Xiao Wu’s Coercion
Wang Changsheng summons Tang San and Xiao Wu into a wooden house, overpowers Tang San, and ties him to a chair. Tang San struggles despite injuring his wrists, then is thrown outside while Xiao Wu remains inside 6 7.
After being freed, he repeatedly attacks the doorway’s barrier with the Clear Sky Hammer. Shrek’s teachers and students assist, but cannot break through. When Xiao Wu emerges, Tang San recognizes that she has been threatened and assures her that he will not leave her. Wang Changsheng’s threats nevertheless prevent her from accepting his offered closeness 8 9.
Forced Rooftop Performance
Tang San and Yu Xiaogang are compelled to perform another sign-in scene. Tang San sits on a roof holding a trident and impersonating a god with two divine powers, while his teacher pole-vaults up and berates him for supposedly leaving him behind in the mortal world 18 19.
The performance is not an actual ascension. Afterward, Tang San speculates that Wang Changsheng’s behavior may result from cultivation deviation and reassures Yu Xiaogang that he would never abandon him 19.
Destruction of the Eight Spider Lances
Wang Changsheng orders Tang San to display his External Soul Bone, questions its name, and abruptly severs all eight lances. Tang San loses consciousness from the pain while his teachers attend to him. Tang Hao watches from concealment but does not intervene 20.
Immortal Herbs and Dugu Bo’s Cave
Dugu Bo abducts Tang San intending to avenge his granddaughter. Tang San gains a reprieve by identifying his poisoning symptoms and offering treatment. While searching the medicinal grounds, he discovers Immortal Herbs and the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, seeing them as a possible means of surpassing Wang Changsheng 23.
Wang Changsheng intervenes before he can consume the herbs, confiscates his harvest, destroys his stored equipment, and collapses the cave around him. After Tang San digs himself out, Wang Changsheng threatens Xiao Wu’s life to force him to claim responsibility and insult Dugu Bo 24 25.
Once Wang Changsheng leaves, Tang San reveals the truth, but Dugu Bo refuses to believe him. Tang Hao arrives before Dugu Bo can kill the group, forces him to retreat, and reunites with his son 26.
Ah Yin’s Resurrection
Wang Changsheng forcibly takes Tang San and Tang Hao to the Blue Silver Emperor, claiming that his earlier cruelty was a test and that resurrecting Ah Yin will be their reward. Tang San then learns that the plant is his mother 28 29.
Wang Changsheng restores Ah Yin’s human form but announces that she will marry someone other than Tang Hao. As his injured father tries to retaliate, Tang San supports him, sharing his hatred of Wang Changsheng 29 30.
