Background / History
Confrontation with Wang Changsheng
Yu Xiaogang witnesses Wang Changsheng defeat Tang San and reveal nine red Soul Rings followed by seven golden God Rings. Despite his reputation as a theoretical grandmaster, he cannot explain the display. When Wang Changsheng identifies himself as the level 160 Sun God, Xiaogang realizes that the others cannot retaliate on his behalf 1.
He introduces himself as Shrek’s Grandmaster in an attempt to negotiate. During the confrontation, he is injured and loses consciousness; Wang Changsheng wakes him by pouring cold water over his face. Among those present, Xiaogang has the lowest Soul Power and weakest physique 2.
Forced Street Performance
Wang Changsheng orders Xiaogang to wear Xiao Wu’s pink skirt. Xiaogang initially refuses, but relents when Wang threatens to kill Flender, Tang San, and the others. His request to change privately is also denied 3.
Angered by the abuse, Xiaogang threatens to destroy the Divine Realm regardless of the cost. Wang Changsheng exposes his level 29 cultivation to the crowd, turning the threat into another source of public ridicule 3.
To secure the group’s release, Xiaogang squats in the street, makes peace signs with both hands, sticks out his tongue, and gently asks, “Am I cute, Gangzi?” Wang forces him to repeat the performance after his first attempt uses the wrong wording. The completed scene fulfills Wang’s sign-in task and preserves his invincibility for the following day. Xiaogang then removes the skirt and leaves with Flender’s assistance 4.
Restoring Shrek’s Morale
Afterward, Xiaogang recognizes that the students’ humiliation has undermined their desire to cultivate. He claims that an ancient book says gods cannot change their age and argues that, because Wang Changsheng became a god at eighteen, Shrek’s talented students can eventually surpass him 4 5.
The encouragement works too well: Dai Mubai declares that he will reach level 160 before turning eighteen. Xiaogang privately knows that this goal is unrealistic, but continues emphasizing diligent cultivation and his unique teaching methods. When Flender challenges him, he admits that restoring the students’ confidence left him little alternative 5.
As Wang Changsheng continues bullying Shrek, Xiaogang recommends treating revenge as a long-term undertaking. He also offers the possibility that stronger gods—or gods enforcing divine rules—will eventually punish Wang. These are Xiaogang’s judgments, not confirmed outcomes 9 10.
Resistance at the Academy
After Shrek’s group reunites with Liu Erlong at Blue Tyrant Academy, Wang Changsheng appears again and exposes Xiaogang’s street humiliation. Liu Erlong tries to attack him, but Xiaogang repeatedly restrains her, recognizing that she cannot overcome a deity 5 6.
When Wang confines Xiao Wu behind a divine barrier, Xiaogang identifies the obstruction as a restriction imposed by divine power. He joins the others in attacking it with his Soul Skill, but their combined efforts fail to break through, continuing until they are exhausted in the early morning 8.
Rooftop Performance with Tang San
Wang Changsheng later forces Xiaogang and Tang San to stage another sign-in scene. Tang San must sit on a roof holding a trident and impersonating a god with two divine powers. Xiaogang must launch himself onto the roof using Ten-Year Solitary Bamboo, then accuse his disciple of abandoning him after becoming a god 18.
Xiaogang crashes into a door and then a wall before finding the correct launch angle, scraping his face raw. He succeeds on his third attempt and delivers the required accusation, completing Wang’s task 18 19.
Afterward, Tang San sincerely promises that, if he becomes a god, he will take his teacher to the Divine Realm. Xiaogang responds with renewed confidence that he can raise a god 19.
Spiritual Partnership with Liu Erlong
Although Xiaogang loves Liu Erlong, he avoids accepting her physical affection because she is his paternal cousin. Flender proposes that they become a “spiritual couple”: acknowledging their love without a conventional physical marriage. Xiaogang embraces the idea, and Liu Erlong accepts his terms 20 21.
That night, Wang Changsheng impersonates Xiaogang when Liu Erlong mistakes him for her partner. The following morning, Xiaogang’s confusion reveals that he never visited her room. Learning what happened leaves him furious 21 22.
Xiaogang follows Liu Erlong when she confronts Wang and witnesses Wang coercing her through threats against his life. Unable to intervene, he consoles himself that her love still belongs to him. He later asks Wang to stop making things difficult for her, but Wang refuses 22 23.
Pursuit of Tang San and Tournament Training
When Flender reports that Tang San has been taken, Xiaogang joins him and Liu Erlong in pursuit. They confront Dugu Bo, who is preparing to kill Tang San over the destruction of his cave abode 23 26.
Xiaogang reveals that Tang San has Twin Martial Souls and invokes Tang Hao’s potential retaliation to deter Dugu Bo. He also questions whether Tang San could have destroyed the cave with his own strength. The confrontation ends when Tang Hao arrives and Dugu Bo withdraws 26.
Xiaogang subsequently resumes preparing Tang San for the Soul Master Elite Tournament. When Wang Changsheng interrupts, he objects that the training is at a critical stage; Wang dismisses his protest 28.
Appearance
- Age impression: Described as a middle-aged man with an aged face; no exact age is given 2 4.
- Usual clothing: Black cloth clothes 4.
- Temporary outfit: Xiao Wu’s pink skirt, worn under threat during the street performance 3 4.
- Documented injuries: Severe enough to prevent him from standing after the first confrontation; later, his face is scraped and bleeding after failed bamboo launches 3 18.
Personality
Xiaogang places considerable importance on his dignity and reputation as Grandmaster. Public ridicule provokes intense anger, but threats against Shrek repeatedly force him to suppress it. His decision to comply with the skirt performance reflects both his own unwillingness to die and his refusal to bring the others down with him 3 4.
He sees his students’ achievements as a way to demonstrate the value of his theories. To preserve their motivation, he knowingly makes promises he considers implausible and reinforces their dependence on his teaching. In private, he is much less confident than his authoritative explanations suggest 4 5 9.
His caution contrasts with Liu Erlong’s impulsiveness: he repeatedly stops her from attacking Wang Changsheng. His attachment to her also coexists with a firm objection to a physical relationship between blood relatives, leading him to accept a spiritual partnership instead 6 20 21.
Abilities & Skills
Soul Master Theory and Instruction
Xiaogang’s principal role is teaching and interpreting Soul Master knowledge rather than displaying overwhelming combat strength 1 4 28.
- Provides explanations intended to restore morale after encounters with Wang Changsheng 4 5 9.
- Identifies Ten-Year Solitary Bamboo by its toughness 18.
- Oversees preparations for the Soul Master Elite Tournament, which Liu Erlong regards as an opportunity to test his theories in practice 20 28.
- Cites ancient records when discussing gods, though his predictions about Wang’s punishment remain unverified 5 10 23.
Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao
Xiaogang releases two Soul Rings and uses Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao, preceded by the chant “Farts like thunder,” during the attempt to rescue Xiao Wu 8.
- Participates in Shrek’s combined assault on Wang Changsheng’s barrier 8.
- Cannot breach the divine restriction, even with the others’ assistance 8.
“Pole Vault” Performance
“Pole Vault” is not an actual Soul Skill belonging to Xiaogang. He explicitly objects when Wang Changsheng assigns him the name; the maneuver relies on the springiness of Ten-Year Solitary Bamboo 18.
- Requires planting and bending the bamboo to launch himself toward a roof 18.
- Ordinary roof-jumping is within his capabilities, but the imposed bamboo method requires repeated angle adjustments 18.
- Succeeds on the third attempt after two collisions 18.
Relationships
- Tang San — Disciple who believes in Xiaogang’s teaching unconditionally. After their forced rooftop performance, Tang San promises to take him to the Divine Realm if he becomes a god 5 19.
- Liu Erlong — Paternal cousin, former girlfriend, and eventual spiritual partner. She fiercely defends him and accepts a nonphysical relationship to accommodate his ethical concerns 5 6 20 21.

- Wang Changsheng — Antagonist who repeatedly humiliates Xiaogang and uses threats against Shrek to compel his participation in sign-in tasks. Xiaogang hopes divine authorities will eventually punish him 3 4 18 23.
- Tang Hao — Tang San’s father and a figure Xiaogang admires. Xiaogang invokes his reputation while attempting to deter Dugu Bo 26.
- Dugu Bo — Opponent during the rescue of Tang San. He rejects Xiaogang’s warnings and challenges his understanding of the destroyed cave’s extreme cold and heat 26.
