Background / History
Clan Origins
Yu Xiaogang is the son of Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan master Yu Yuanzhen. His Martial Soul mutated into Luo Sanpao, a creature resembling both a pig and a dog, and his Soul Power stalled at Level 29. The clan expelled him after concluding that he would never reach Level 30 51 73.
He interpreted the expulsion as proof of the clan’s shortsightedness rather than his own limitations. Believing his theories could transform the Soul Master world, he expected his relatives to regret rejecting him 51.
Recalled Previous Life
In his recovered memories, Yu Xiaogang taught Tang San, surpassed Level 30, and eventually became the Level 93 Dragon God Douluo. His honors included imperial preceptor of Heaven Dou, Teacher of Gods, and Shrek Academy’s “wisdom totem.” He credited himself with Tang San’s success and Spirit Hall’s destruction 52.
His relationship with Tang San ended in bitter disappointment. When Tang San prepared to ascend to the Divine Realm, Yu Xiaogang begged to accompany him but was insulted and left behind 52.
He also remembers leaving Spirit City after Qian Xunji denounced him, subsequently meeting his cousin Liu Erlong, and forming the Golden Love Triangle with her and Flender. Liu Erlong became his wife, although his attachment to Bibi Dong persisted 53 60.
Appearance
- Short crew cut or flat-top: His most consistently noted feature, recognizable enough for witnesses to identify him after the Sea God Island expedition 60 122.
- Increasingly thin physique: Prolonged abuse leaves him sallow, exhausted, and visibly diminished 80.
- Severe fatigue after the island ordeal: He is described with sunken cheeks, prominent eyes, and heavy dark circles 117.
- Deliberately imposing posture: He frequently clasps his hands behind his back, raises his chin, and adopts a bearing far above his actual cultivation 82 122.
Personality
Yu Xiaogang places extraordinary value on his intelligence, reputation, and status as a teacher. He treats Tang San’s achievements as evidence of his own greatness and is particularly sensitive to criticism of his theories. Qian Xunji repeatedly exploits that sensitivity by offering praise or suggesting that he lacks confidence in his work 52 80.
His vanity makes him susceptible to flattery. He mistakes scholars’ contempt for jealousy, interprets strange audience reactions as admiration, and becomes so attached to Spirit Hall’s honors that he abandons his earlier determination to destroy it 56 58 59 62.
His personal plans are openly instrumental. He intends to use Tang San’s reputation for respecting teachers to force him into providing passage to the Divine Realm. He similarly regards Bibi Dong as a backup route to godhood and Liu Erlong as indispensable to the Golden Sacred Dragon fusion 52 62.
Despite his boastfulness, he fears death, exposure, and humiliation. Once Brother Jie’s group acquires compromising recordings, protecting his public image becomes a major reason he obeys them and refuses outside intervention 64 70 71.
Abilities & Skills
Luo Sanpao
- An external Martial Soul that manifests separately from Yu Xiaogang’s body 87.
- Appears as a plump, pale-purple pig-like creature with large ears and a short tail 71.
- Can share senses with Yu Xiaogang and uses gas-based Soul Skills 70.
- Injuries to Luo Sanpao rebound onto Yu Xiaogang; severe damage can incapacitate both 87 114 127.
- Weak in direct combat: a harpoon-wielding Sea Soul Master knocks him down during the prison escape 101.
Gas-Based Soul Skills
| Skill | Documented application |
|---|---|
| First Soul Skill — Fart Like Thunder, Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao | Releases a forceful gas blast. Used to repel pursuers, propel flight, and attack through the Golden Sacred Dragon 85 101 116. |
| Second Soul Skill — Fart Like Fog, Hypnotic Slumber Luo Sanpao | Released during the sustained battle against Sea God Island’s defenders 108. |
| Self-Created Soul Skill — Fart Like a Landslide, Heaven-Collapsing and Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao | Part of his externally powered barrage 108. |
| Self-Created Soul Skill — Fart Like a Tsunami, Murky Waves Surging to the Heavens Luo Sanpao | Contributes to successive gas blasts that gather into a large yellow whirlwind 108. |
Jet-Propelled Flight
- Sustained output from Luo Sanpao’s first Soul Skill provides thrust, turning him into a flying mount 116 124.
- Used for escape, reconnaissance, and rescuing companions from midair 105 106 116.
- Quickly exhausts Yu Xiaogang’s Level 29 reserves, requiring meditation or external replenishment 106 116.
- His piloting becomes precise enough to clear a moving course of fire rings, although ignited exhaust burns both rider and Martial Soul 127.
Trinity Martial Soul Fusion Skill
- Combines Yu Xiaogang, Liu Erlong, and Flender into a golden triangular formation, transforming Luo Sanpao into the Golden Sacred Dragon 60 106.
- Yu Xiaogang serves as the fusion’s core and directs its Soul Skills 85.
- Requires substantial Soul Power and coordinated output from the participants 106 107.
- Its overwhelming performance in Sea Witch City depends on concealed divine assistance. When Gu Yuena withdraws that power, the dragon collapses back into Luo Sanpao 85 86 87.
- Later attempts cannot reproduce that initial strength through fusion alone 106.
Soul Power Resonance
- Brother Jie’s group replenishes Yu Xiaogang and Luo Sanpao through coerced “Martial Soul Theory” sessions that produce Soul Power resonance 102.
- The technique is later identified as Same Position, Same Vibration, performed with the Complete Compendium of Martial Soul Core Theories 110.
- Flender also participates in replenishment during the escape 104 107.
- This supplies energy for flight and prolonged attacks; it does not establish a permanent cultivation breakthrough 106 108 116.
Martial Soul Theory
- Compiles and publishes the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul, drawing on material associated with Spirit Hall’s research 52 56.
- Advocates the principle that animal Martial Souls can absorb plant-type Soul Rings 69.
- Recommends Lone Bamboo for Bibi Dong’s Death Spider Emperor to improve toughness. Her resulting sixth skill provides eight successive changes of direction, which he names Eight Extremes Bounce 69 71.
- His authority is repeatedly challenged: he cannot answer Bibi Dong’s cultivation questions, scholars dismiss his treatise as recycled common knowledge, and a competition opponent exposes plagiarism and missing qualifications in his claims 54 56 123 125.
- Wins one debate by showcasing Luo Sanpao’s flight and refusing to return to his opponent’s criticism, rather than rigorously proving his universal claim 124.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Storage Soul Tool: Holds his manuscript of the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul 56.
- Elder Token: Issued with his appointment as Spirit Hall honorary elder, alongside a stipend 56.
- Continent Theory Trailblazing Pioneer Gold Medal: Awarded by Qian Xunji during his manufactured rise to fame 57.
- Lifetime achievement trophy: Presented after his public demonstration of the Trinity Martial Soul Fusion Skill 60.
- Nine lucky gold coins: A secret-realm wheel reward received instead of the remaining Luck Value needed for the grand prize 130.
Relationships
- Tang San — Previous-life disciple and source of his divine blood. Yu Xiaogang resents being denied ascension but still plans to depend on him again 52.
- Bibi Dong — Romantic attachment and fellow returnee. They initially plan to flee together after she reaches Soul Saint, but he later prioritizes his Spirit Hall career. An unexplained force repeatedly throws him away when they touch 55 58 59.
- Liu Erlong — Cousin, previous-life wife, fellow returnee, and fusion partner. She becomes his academic assistant and repeatedly tries to protect him, while he treats public affection as a threat to his image 53 60 62 75.
- Flender — Sworn brother and fusion partner. Flender loves Liu Erlong, creating a continuing romantic imbalance; he later joins the Soul Power replenishment sessions 60 104.
- Yu Yuanzhen — Father and clan master. Their reunion ends in a severe beating, but Yu Yuanzhen later protests his dangerous assignment and helps free him on Sea God Island 73 74 88 101.
- Yu Luomian — Second uncle and Liu Erlong’s father. Initially dismissive, he briefly recognizes Yu Xiaogang’s determination during the retreat battle 53 109.
- Qian Xunji — Patron in public, manipulator in private. He supplies titles and acclaim while arranging surveillance, coercive companions, and dangerous assignments 56 62 76 80.
- Brother Jie, Brother Wei, Brother Billy, and Brother Jiao — Assigned “research partners” who first flatter him, then abuse and blackmail him with Image Recording Stones. Their recordings make him defend them publicly and resist rescue attempts 56 63 64 66 71.
- Gu Yue and Gu Yuena — Concealed interferers in his life. Gu Yue directs Liu Erlong toward him, while the pair manipulate combat and secret-realm challenges without his understanding 60 85 86 127.
- Ning Fengzhi — A figure he remembers as praising him in his previous life; becomes a rival for the secret realm’s opportunity in the current timeline 52 132.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Return and Entry into Spirit Hall
After recovering memories outside Thunder Canyon, Yu Xiaogang decides to secure immortality by attaching himself to Tang San again. Since Tang San has not yet been born, he travels to Spirit City to pursue Bibi Dong, access Spirit Hall’s research, and establish an alternative route to godhood 51 52.
Qian Xunji exposes weaknesses in his theoretical knowledge at a banquet. Yu Xiaogang leaves furious and vows to destroy Spirit Hall, but soon confirms that Bibi Dong also remembers their previous lives 54 55.
Manufactured Fame and Blackmail
Qian Xunji reverses tactics by publicly celebrating Yu Xiaogang’s work, appointing him honorary elder, and surrounding him with flattering scholars. Yu Xiaogang becomes absorbed in publications, lectures, medals, and philosophical discussions, rejecting Bibi Dong’s warnings about ulterior motives 56 57 58 59.
Liu Erlong’s arrival creates a rivalry with Bibi Dong. Rather than choose between them, he declares that his career must come first. Brother Jie’s group subsequently coerces him into a private encounter and uses recordings to maintain control over him 60 61 62 63 64 66.
Return to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan
As Spirit Hall’s envoy, Yu Xiaogang delivers an invitation to the Continental Soul Master Theory Competition. He hopes his new status will force his former detractors to acknowledge him 72 73.
Instead, Yu Yuanzhen beats him. Further blackmail from Brother Jie forces him to take responsibility for the group’s provocations, culminating in a hundred lashes before the clan agrees to attend 74 75.
Sea God Island Expedition
Qian Xunji persuades Yu Xiaogang to join the expedition by promising historical glory and challenging his confidence in his theories. Yu Xiaogang imagines controlling Tang San’s future access to the Sea God inheritance—or obtaining the godhood himself 80.
His actual assessment yields only a White Level One Trial. Conflict with island residents escalates into a Golden Sacred Dragon gas attack, secretly strengthened by divine intervention. Once that support is withdrawn, he and his companions are overwhelmed and imprisoned 82 84 85 86 87.
During the allied assault, Yu Yuanzhen and Yu Luomian help free the prisoners. Yu Xiaogang uses flight and externally replenished fusion attacks to resist pursuit and aid the retreat. The expedition’s losses nevertheless leave both empires seeking retaliation against him 101 106 108 109 110 118.
Stranding and Reunion
Separated from his companions, Yu Xiaogang survives on a deserted island with Luo Sanpao. He searches from the air but is bitten by a venomous snake and collapses. His companions find him, and Flender removes the poison after Brother Jie prevents Liu Erlong from treating him 114 116 117.
The party eventually receives help from seafarers. Yu Xiaogang recognizes Ji Ba as the father of Tang San’s future disciple Ji Xiang and immediately begins promoting his theories to him 119.
Theory Competition and Secret Realm
Back at Pope Mountain, Yu Xiaogang learns that the competition offers an opportunity to evolve his Martial Soul. He enters despite public recognition of his humiliating Sea God Island flight, wins an initial debate through evasive argument, and loses an early opportunity involving dragon essence blood 122 123 124 125.
With help from his supporters, he repeatedly wins access to the secret realm and pursues its wheel reward:
| Luck Value | Chapter | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 90% | 127 | Total reported after his first spin. |
| 95% | 127 | Gains 5% after completing the moving fire-ring flight course. |
| 96%, 97%, 98%, then 99% | 128 | Repeated debate victories and realm entries raise the total. |
| 99.99% | 130 | Receives nine lucky gold coins rather than the final 0.01%; no Martial Soul evolution is documented. |
He accuses the realm of cheating, is whipped and expelled, then concedes so Ji Boda can investigate. When Ning Fengzhi subsequently seeks to challenge Ji Boda, Yu Xiaogang regards him as competition for the opportunity 130 132.
