Arc 2From Hoenn to Snowpoint

Terrance trained Swablu, earned Altaria’s approval to take him as his Pokémon, and expanded his knowledge as a breeder before helping resolve the Whismur crisis. He left Hoenn for Coronet Academy and began a battle with Snowpoint Gym’s Candice.

  • Terrance trained Swablu for weeks, and Swablu learned new moves before facing Seviper and awakening Dragon Rush to protect Terrance.
  • Altaria rescued Terrance and Swablu, then allowed Swablu to leave with Terrance after they spent time together on Mt. Chimney.
  • Terrance reunited with Beautifly, officially took Swablu as his Pokémon, and visited the Breeding House library, where Sedai’s biography inspired him to pursue more rigorous research.
  • Terrance investigated the Whismur rampage near Rusturf Tunnel with Master Katsumune, learned that abandoned Diglett had displaced the colony, and watched Beautifly lose a battle to Exploud.
  • Terrance developed an idea for Swablu to imitate opponents’ attacks, secured a place at Coronet Academy, and sailed from Hoenn to Sinnoh.
  • In Snowpoint City, Candice offered Terrance directions to Coronet Academy in exchange for a battle, and Beautifly pulled her Snover to the ground with String Shot.
Chapters 26–50 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 26Getting Along

Terrance began training Swablu in flight, stamina, and Peck while learning about its abilities and getting acquainted with it. After their first day together, Terrance prepared for more demanding training and studied for the intermediate breeder assessment.

  • Terrance trained Swablu's flying and stamina and had it practice Peck on a wooden stump, where it made noticeable progress.
  • Terrance stopped Swablu's training before it overexerted itself and spent time telling it about his experiences at Qinggu House and his plans for the future.
  • Terrance prepared food for himself and Swablu, ending their first day together after learning more about Swablu's condition.
  • Terrance planned to postpone battle training while preparing a more demanding practice routine for Swablu.
  • Terrance studied for the intermediate breeder assessment, which could qualify him to apply to the League to establish a Pokémon Day Care, then told Swablu to rest.

Ch. 27The Second Egg Move

Terrance continued training Swablu on Mt. Chimney, where it improved its Peck and flight, learned Agility, and began developing its voice. Unsure how to give the newly hatched Pokémon battle experience with its limited moves, Terrance took Swablu into the forest to find another way to address the problem.

  • Swablu improved its Peck, flight, and energy control during several days of training with Terrance.
  • After being startled by a Seedot, Swablu learned Agility but lost its balance, and Terrance caught it before it was badly hurt.
  • Terrance used Qingyingluo to help Swablu's throat mature and trained it in Astonish and Sing.
  • Terrance judged that Swablu's few basic attacks and limited battle ability made actual battles impractical for now.
  • Terrance took Swablu into the forest after coming up with an idea to address its lack of battle-ready moves, though he lacked the preparations to carry it out.

Ch. 28Natural Gift

Terrance gathered several kinds of Berries on Mt. Chimney and prepared them so Swablu could learn Natural Gift. While he processed the Berries, Swablu practiced coordinating her moves, and the chapter left them ready to begin using the new attack.

  • Terrance and Swablu encountered a Nuzleaf, and Terrance gave it food before sending it on its way.
  • Terrance collected Cheri, Chesto, Lum, and Haban Berries and carefully packed the twelve he found.
  • Terrance explained Natural Gift to Swablu and processed a Cheri Berry pit so she could release its energy in a burst.
  • Terrance processed the remaining Berries while Swablu resumed training her moves.
  • Swablu practiced attacking her Feather Dance with Peck, and Terrance asked her to take a break.

Ch. 29Vs. Lotad

Terrance arranged a battle between Swablu and a lost Lotad, using the fight to train Swablu’s battle awareness and obedience. Swablu dodged Lotad’s Bubble Beam with Agility, but the battle remained unfinished.

  • Terrance offered Lotad clean water and help finding a lake in exchange for battling Swablu.
  • Lotad opened the battle with a bubble attack, and Swablu waited for Terrance’s command.
  • Terrance ordered Fury Attack, and Swablu pecked through bubbles before charging at Lotad.
  • Lotad countered with Absorb, so Terrance ordered Swablu to retreat into the air.
  • Lotad used a stronger, orderly Bubble Beam, and Swablu used Agility to dodge it, stopping with its heart pounding.

Ch. 30Seviper

Terrance supervised a battle between Swablu and Lotad, then led Lotad toward a lake. When Seviper ambushed them, Terrance and the Pokémon fled, and he reassured Swablu before taking Lotad to search for another lake.

  • Swablu and Lotad clashed with Astonish, Natural Gift, and Nature Power until both were thrown back by the collision.
  • Terrance checked the Pokémon for injuries, treated their scrapes, and took Lotad toward a nearby lake.
  • Seviper emerged from the grass and pursued Terrance, Swablu, and Lotad after Lotad and Swablu tried to drive it off.
  • Terrance struck Seviper with a stone, then helped the Pokémon escape while scattering snake repellent powder.
  • After the powder stopped Seviper from following them, Terrance comforted Swablu and led Lotad in another direction to find a lake.

Ch. 31The Future

The chapter follows Qinggu House’s children as they consider their futures after Terrance leaves, while Jun chooses her path and Master Katsumune wonders how Terrance and Swablu are progressing. In Sootopolis, Steven defeats Wallace, and the three Trainers discuss the young talents who may shape Hoenn’s future.

  • Rina worried about Terrance and asked A-Yang whether he would leave Qinggu House too, prompting him to reflect on his lack of confidence and a Pokémon.
  • The children at Qinggu House were shown to have different ambitions, though their circumstances could limit their choices.
  • Nurse Joy Jun contacted Master Katsumune after gaining her family’s approval, and they discussed her future and Terrance’s training.
  • Steven defeated Wallace in a friendly match at Sootopolis Gym, while Juan remarked on their promise as future top Trainers.
  • Wallace told Steven and Juan about two ten-year-old junior Breeder exam passers, including an orphan, and Steven expressed interest in their potential.
  • Juan, Steven, and Wallace envisioned League expansion making Trainer life more accessible and bringing forth many talented Trainers.

Ch. 32The End of the Trial

After nearly a month of training on Mt. Chimney, Terrance and Swablu prepared to challenge Seviper before their trial ended. They found Seviper in the forest, and Swablu faced it as the battle began.

  • Terrance trained Swablu for nearly a month, helping it master moves including Cotton Guard, Agility, and Hidden Power.
  • Shiftry taught Swablu Hidden Power after Terrance and Swablu helped an injured Nuzleaf, and Swablu discovered its Hidden Power was Dragon-type.
  • Swablu asked to challenge Seviper, recalling Terrance's promise that it would grow strong enough to face it.
  • Terrance gathered medicines and supplies, then searched the forest with Swablu for Seviper.
  • Terrance and Swablu found Seviper, which took an attacking stance, and Terrance stepped back to let Swablu battle.

Ch. 33Awakening: Dragon Rush!

Terrance trained Swablu against Seviper, but Seviper paralyzed Swablu with Glare and struck Terrance while he protected it. Seeing Terrance hurt drove Swablu into a furious surge of power, and it launched a Dragon Rush at Seviper.

  • Terrance ordered Swablu to battle Seviper with evasive moves, Peck, and Hidden Power.
  • Seviper used Glare to paralyze Swablu after Swablu struck it with Hidden Power.
  • Terrance treated Swablu, but Seviper attacked him and knocked him down while he shielded Swablu.
  • Swablu recovered enough to fly again and became enraged after seeing Terrance injured.
  • Swablu surged forward in blue-purple flames, and Terrance recognized its attack as Dragon Rush.

Ch. 34Altaria Returns

Swablu defeated Seviper with Dragon Rush but was left unconscious and badly injured, leaving Terrance to flee with him from another Seviper. As Terrance prepared to make a last stand, a familiar sound revealed that Altaria had arrived.

  • Swablu used Dragon Rush to knock Seviper into a crater, then fell unconscious from the strain.
  • Terrance found Swablu buried in the earth and gave him emergency medicine, but Swablu showed no improvement.
  • A second Seviper pursued Terrance as he carried Swablu, and Terrance discovered that his prepared trap had been destroyed.
  • Terrance tripped and injured his foot while protecting Swablu, then picked up a stone to face Seviper.
  • Altaria's familiar song reached Terrance, giving him hope that Altaria had come to help.

Ch. 35The Assessment Ends

Altaria rescued Terrance and Swablu from Seviper, revealing that she had watched over them during their assessment. After taking Terrance to her hidden home on Mt. Chimney, she reunited with Swablu while Master Katsumune left Terrance to wait a day for her decision on whether he had earned her approval.

  • Altaria froze Seviper with Ice Beam and soothed Terrance and the unconscious Swablu as the medicine took effect.
  • Swablu woke, recognized Altaria as his mother, and struggled to take in the revelation.
  • Altaria led Terrance and Swablu to a misty mountaintop on Mt. Chimney, where she had been waiting.
  • Master Katsumune arrived with Pidgeot and Alakazam, then asked Altaria whether Terrance had earned her approval.
  • Altaria called for Swablu to stay with her, and Master Katsumune took Terrance away for a day while mother and son spent time together.

Ch. 36Beautifly

After a month training on Mt. Chimney with Swablu, Terrance returned to Slateport City and reunited with Beautifly, who had stayed with Master Katsumune. The next morning, Terrance, Beautifly, and Master Katsumune flew back to Mt. Chimney, where Terrance hoped Swablu could persuade Altaria to let them travel together.

  • On the helicopter to Slateport City, Terrance told Master Katsumune that the month had taught him about Pokémon habitats, raising newborns, and Egg Moves, especially Dragon Rush.
  • Master Katsumune returned Beautifly's Cherish Ball to Terrance and offered to take him to dinner after he rested.
  • At the inn, Terrance released Beautifly, reunited with her, and planned to show her how much she and Swablu had grown before introducing her to a new partner.
  • The next morning, Terrance, Master Katsumune, and Beautifly flew back to Mt. Chimney.
  • Master Katsumune reassured Terrance that Swablu would try to persuade his mother, Altaria, and urged him to believe in their bond and effort.

Ch. 37Swablu Joins the Team

Terrance reunited with Swablu on Mt. Chimney and officially welcomed the Pokémon onto his team after meeting with Altaria. He left with Beautifly and Swablu, promising Altaria he would take good care of Swablu and return with a stronger partner.

  • Master Katsumune praised Beautifly's progress, including its improved wind control and newly learned Air Cutter.
  • Swablu flew to greet Terrance's helicopter, and Master Katsumune said Swablu had persuaded Altaria to let it go with him.
  • Beautifly greeted Swablu with Morning Sun, and Swablu answered by scattering its feathers through the glowing light.
  • Swablu told Terrance that Altaria wanted to see them, so Terrance went with Swablu to meet Altaria before returning with a Luxury Ball.
  • Terrance officially took Swablu as his Pokémon and departed Mt. Chimney with Beautifly and Swablu, calling out a promise to Altaria from the helicopter.

Ch. 38A New Beginning

Terrance reviewed training plans for Beautifly and Swablu while staying in Qishui City and decided to consult the Breeding House library about helping Swablu master Dragon Rush. As he walked there, a dark figure rushed into him and nearly knocked him down.

  • Terrance studied Beautifly’s moves and planned to improve her control of air currents and develop Absorb alongside Morning Sun.
  • Terrance planned Swablu’s voice training, Agility practice, and gradual development, but could not find a quick way to teach her Dragon Rush.
  • Terrance decided to visit the Breeding House library to research Dragon Rush and left the inn with both Pokémon’s Poké Balls.
  • Terrance walked toward the library while thinking about his Pokémon’s training and failed to notice a dark figure rushing toward him.
  • A hurried voice warned Terrance, but the figure slammed into him and nearly knocked him to the ground.

Ch. 39Brock

Terrance met ten-year-old Brock in Qishui City and learned that Brock hoped to become a Pokémon breeder. The two boys headed to the Breeding House library, where Terrance considered the vast amount of knowledge it held.

  • Terrance bumped into Brock, a boy from Pewter City, and recognized him after learning his name.
  • Terrance and Brock talked about their hometowns and their interest in breeders and Pokémon care.
  • Brock explained that he hoped to become a certified breeder but struggled with the assessment's broad regional curriculum.
  • Terrance reassured Brock about the breeder exam and accompanied him to the Breeding House library.
  • Terrance described the library's enormous collection, access rules, and security as he and Brock entered.

Ch. 40Breeding House

Terrance and Brock visited a large library, where Terrance used his junior breeder certification to gain free access to the first three floors and gather books about Swablu and related training. He spent his remaining time reading about the world’s history and began a biography titled “Sedai.”

  • Brock paid for two hours of access while Terrance showed the clerk his junior breeder certification and received free access to the first three floors.
  • Terrance and Brock entered the library and split up to look for books about their interests.
  • Terrance gathered books on Swablu, Dragon-type moves, and Pokémon care, planning to borrow them with his breeder privileges.
  • Terrance explored the second floor and read about ancient Pokémon, human warfare, and Coronet Academy.
  • Terrance checked the time and began reading a biography titled “Sedai.”

Ch. 41The Origins of Pokémon Breeders

The chapter recounts how Sedai’s research into his three evolving Eevee and other objects that affected Pokémon led him to become the first Pokémon Breeder. After the Pokémon League rose to power, Sedai shared his findings and helped establish the Breeder profession and its organization.

  • As a child, Sedai discovered a mysterious stone that transformed his Eevee into Vaporeon.
  • Sedai traveled for two years, found two more stones, and watched his other Eevee evolve into Jolteon and Flareon.
  • Sedai spent seven years studying Pokémon in the wild and discovered how Silver Powder, a concentrated drop of water, and Berries affected them.
  • After the Warring States period ended, Sedai presented his research to the Pokémon League and received widespread attention.
  • Sedai and like-minded researchers founded an organization that studied Pokémon’s growth, evolution, and reproduction, and named themselves Pokémon Breeders.

Ch. 42Knowledge? Knowledge!

After reading about Sedai, Terrance reflected on how knowledge had shaped his life and decided to pursue a path of strengthening Pokémon through external tools and resources. He left the Breeding House with a broad research direction in mind, though he still lacked a rigorous plan.

  • Terrance read Sedai’s biography and was struck by the breeder’s decades of perseverance and his advice to use knowledge to achieve one’s goals.
  • Terrance connected Sedai’s words to his own progress and realized his breeder training was not yet sufficient before his upcoming departure for Coronet Academy.
  • Terrance left the Breeding House without disturbing Brock, who remained absorbed in his reading.
  • On the way back to the hotel, Terrance concluded that knowledge could help trainers grow beyond relying on Pokémon strength, experience, or luck.
  • Terrance considered studying external aids such as resources, move discs, supplements, and training devices, drawing inspiration from breeders’ research and ideas from his other world.
  • Terrance recalled the term Mega Evolution while thinking about Master Katsumune’s research, but he recognized that his own research direction still needed to become more rigorous.

Ch. 43Rusturf Tunnel

Terrance accompanied Master Katsumune to Verdanturf Town to investigate the Whismur disrupting construction on Rusturf Tunnel, and learned the Pokémon’s motive remained unknown. While Master Katsumune met with officials, Terrance watched local trainers battle as Tetsuya formed a group to investigate the incident themselves.

  • Terrance and Master Katsumune traveled to Verdanturf Town after Whismur repeatedly damaged the Rusturf Tunnel construction site and injured workers.
  • Terrance reasoned that the Whismur’s Soundproof talent meant construction noise might not explain their actions, and Master Katsumune agreed that their motive needed investigation.
  • After arriving, Master Katsumune met with police and staff while Terrance went to watch trainers battle nearby.
  • Tetsuya defeated an Azumarill with his Grovyle, earning his fourth consecutive victory.
  • Tetsuya proposed taking five trainers into the mountains to investigate the Whismur, and three trainers joined him, bringing the group to four.

Ch. 44The Noise Pokémon

Terrance was mistakenly recruited by four young Trainers planning to investigate the Whismur rampage, though he intended to rest instead. The next morning, Master Katsumune revealed that Exploud was leading the aggressive Pokémon and sent Terrance to find the missing Trainers with Pidgeot.

  • Tetsuya invited Terrance to join the investigation, and Sōsa, Koki, and Agaku assumed Terrance was a rookie Trainer when he tried to decline.
  • The five Trainers planned to enter the mountains at midnight to investigate the Whismur rampage near Rusturf Tunnel.
  • Terrance left the group intending not to meet them again and made a temporary shelter for the night.
  • A disturbance woke Terrance the next morning, and he found Officer Jenny and Master Katsumune investigating the incident.
  • Master Katsumune explained that Exploud was the Whismur's leader and that Whismur and Loudred had become aggressive before retreating into the mountains.
  • Terrance warned that the four Trainers might already be in the mountains, so Master Katsumune gave him Pidgeot's Poké Ball and asked him to find them while he and Officer Jenny investigated Exploud.

Ch. 45Totem

Terrance searched the mountains for Tetsuya’s group and found an enormous, aggressive Exploud among a Whismur colony. Tetsuya and the others followed the cries into a narrow mountain path, where Terrance’s Beautifly arrived as they faced several Whismur.

  • Terrance and Pidgeot searched the mountain range and spotted Whismur and Loudred, but continued looking for Tetsuya’s group.
  • Exploud roared among the colony, and Terrance retreated with Pidgeot after recognizing the Pokémon’s immense strength.
  • Tetsuya, Sōsa, Koki, and Agaku felt vibrations near a cave and hurried onward to investigate.
  • The group encountered several Whismur on a narrow path and sent out Grovyle, Persian, Roselia, and Nincada to battle.
  • A shadow passed over the trainers, and a youthful voice ordered Beautifly to use Sleep Powder.

Ch. 46The Reason

Terrance warned Tetsuya and the other Trainers about the dangerous Whismur group, then helped guide them to safety while Master Katsumune calmed Exploud. Terrance later learned that abandoned Diglett had disrupted the Whismur’s territory and that the conflict had grown from a failure to understand their warning; the humans and Pokémon reached a truce, leaving the Diglett’s impact on the local ecosystem to be addressed.

  • Terrance arrived on Pidgeot and warned Tetsuya, Sōsa, Koki, and Agaku to leave the area, then led them to a hidden cave.
  • After hearing roars, Terrance flew back and found Master Katsumune speaking with Exploud while Miss Jenny and police officers stood nearby.
  • Master Katsumune calmed Exploud, and the Whismur and Loudred withdrew; Terrance told him where the four Trainers were hiding.
  • Terrance learned that a Lavaridge Town farm owner had abandoned nearly a hundred Diglett, which migrated toward Verdanturf and disturbed the Whismur’s home.
  • Master Katsumune traced the conflict to the Diglett migration and negotiated with Exploud, while the humans prepared to address the Diglett’s ecological impact.

Ch. 47Challenge!!

Terrance challenged Exploud to test his ideas about sound-based battling, but Exploud defeated Beautifly with its devastating Boomburst. Terrance left fascinated by Exploud’s techniques and prepared to continue toward resolving the Diglett problem before traveling to Sinnoh.

  • Terrance and Master Katsumune entered Exploud’s cave, and Exploud agreed to battle after Master Katsumune offered to handle the Diglett problem.
  • Terrance sent out Beautifly for a one-on-one battle against Exploud on open ground.
  • Beautifly attacked with Silver Wind and Air Cutter, then trapped Exploud in an electrically charged Electroweb.
  • Exploud unleashed Boomburst, shattered the Electroweb, and blasted Beautifly from the sky, winning the battle.
  • Terrance recalled the injured Beautifly, thanked Exploud, and asked Swablu to observe Exploud’s sound-based techniques.

Ch. 48Farewell, Hoenn (End of volume one)

Terrance planned a long-term sound-training technique for Swablu and secured a place at Coronet Academy. He then left Hoenn for Sinnoh, while Jun set out to pursue ecological conservation research in Kalos.

  • Terrance theorized that Swablu could use Mirror Move and resonant frequencies to counter opponents’ projectile moves, and committed to developing the technique over many years.
  • Master Katsumune contacted Coronet Academy, and Terrance obtained the opportunity to enroll there.
  • Terrance boarded a ship from Slateport City to Sinnoh, where Master Katsumune planned to part ways with him and help Jun speak with her family.
  • Terrance read Jun’s message explaining that she wanted to study damaged ecosystems and pursue conservation research in Kalos.
  • Terrance watched Hoenn recede as he sailed toward Sinnoh and thought of Mt. Coronet.

Ch. 49Snowpoint City

Terrance arrived in snowbound Snowpoint City wearing clothes unsuited to the cold and met Candice, a girl who hoped to become a Gym trainer. She persuaded him to battle at the local Trainer School by offering to tell him a shortcut to Coronet Academy, and they headed there together.

  • Terrance shivered outside the Pokémon Center and realized his clothes were not warm enough for Snowpoint City’s climate.
  • Candice approached Terrance, admired his scarf, and challenged him to a battle.
  • Terrance initially refused, but stopped when Candice said she was from Snowpoint Gym and offered information about a shortcut to Coronet Academy.
  • Terrance agreed to battle Candice and followed her to the Pokémon Trainer School’s battlefield.

Ch. 50A spectacular battle

Terrance battled Candice at the Pokémon Trainer School, where his Beautifly used the wind and precise aerial control to counter Snover. The fight ended with Beautifly pulling Snover down with String Shot, leaving Candice stunned.

  • Candice and Terrance agreed to a one-on-one battle, and Candice sent out Snover while Terrance chose Beautifly.
  • Terrance ordered Beautifly to use Gust, but Snover stood firm and answered with Icy Wind, slowing Beautifly in the cold.
  • Terrance told Beautifly to follow the air currents, and it used the wind to glide through Icy Wind and dodge Snover's Ice Shard.
  • Beautifly launched Electroweb at Snover, and Candice ordered Razor Leaf to cut through the net.
  • As Snover finished Razor Leaf, Beautifly caught its ankles with String Shot and yanked it to the ground.
