Background / History
Sect Leader Qiu’s World
The Demonic Sect claimed several hundred years of history, but its territory, doctrine, and rulers had changed repeatedly. Its earlier leaders specialized in internal arts and poison techniques, carried a green jade staff as their symbol of authority, and often wore masks representing gods. Religious authority encouraged followers to regard dying for their leaders’ ambitions as an honor 182.
During the century preceding Chu Tianshu’s confrontation with Sect Leader Qiu, the staff was replaced by a saber. Divine authority became largely ceremonial; the sect instead cultivated savagery and personal ambition through successive ranks. Although its membership may have been smaller than at its historical peak, its contemporary fighting strength was considered greater 182.
The sect repeatedly attempted to enter the pass and permitted large-scale plundering by its followers. Its attacks inflicted suffering on farming households, women, and children, earning it particular contempt throughout the martial world 193.
Heavenly Wolf Sect’s World
In this world, the Demonic Sect comprised multiple branches with a long history of rivalry and fragmentation. According to tradition, its founders gained access to the Wilderness Sacred Temple’s hidden treasures, greatly increased their cultivation, and established the major branches 643.
Three years before Chu Tianshu’s arrival, the Hall of Longevity organized a joint divination involving leading demonic experts. It predicted that a future Qingyun Sect disciple would devastate the Demonic Sect, prompting an attack on Qingyun. The successful divination also gave participating experts tangible benefits, encouraging previously hostile branches to cooperate under the Hall of Longevity’s leadership 637 643 667.
By Chu Tianshu’s arrival, demonic cultivators were operating openly even in the Northern Wastes. The Heavenly Wolf Sect alone stood at a slight disadvantage against them and needed the support of Tianyin Temple, Incense Valley, and other righteous powers to contend on equal terms 638 641.
Organization
Beyond the Pass
| Position / Group | Responsibilities and Members |
|---|---|
| Sect Leader | Qiu commands the sect, teaches its secret arts, and wields its treasured saber 182 183. |
| Four Great Protectors | Trusted experts who generally remain beside the leader unless dispatched on urgent assignments 182. |
| Jin Shi | Trains new followers and helps manage the leader’s personal troops and guards. Originally fled an orthodox Central Plains family after a scandal 182. |
| Yin Jiang | Accompanies Qiu and fights Lu Shuangyan during the ambush on the sect’s column 182. |
| Tong Yaonü | Dispatched to Dongying 182. |
| Tie Siming | Serves as an envoy in the Central Plains and oversees the curved-saber trade 182. |
| Four Great Heavenly Kings | Remain stationed abroad throughout the year, administering their respective regions 182. |
| Ordinary Members | Almost universally carry sabers and possess some saber training; recruited experts retain a wider variety of weapons and martial backgrounds 182. |
Demonic Alliance
| Branch / Figure | Role |
|---|---|
| Hall of Longevity | The dominant branch under Wu Shanjun. Restores the sacred headquarters and increasingly draws the other branches into its organizational framework 650 667 670. |
| Spirit Mountain Hall / Lingshan Hall | Participates in the divine-stone scheme and the ambush near Heavenly Lake. Its hall master is killed 643 645 649 656. |
| Heavenly Lantern Pavilion | Joins the Heavenly Lake ambush; its master is subsequently reported slain 645 656. |
| Hehuan Sect | Its master participates through a Dao Companion Puppet, allowing her to obtain information from separate battlefields without exposing her true body 649 655. |
| Corpse Joy Palace | Supports Wu Shanjun’s effort to consolidate the surviving branches and joins the attack on Incense Valley 655 664. |
| Poison God | Participates in the Heavenly Lake ambush and is captured alive by Chu Tianshu and the Yue brothers 645 649. |
- Unstable internal unity: Wu Shanjun expects leaderless branches to descend rapidly into infighting or flee with their treasures. After the initial defeats, he orders the surviving sect masters to bring their followers under unified command 655.
- Collective retaliation: Demonic cultivators commonly avenge one another, making even ordinary settlements fear the consequences of killing an individual offender 638.
Cultivation & Techniques
Eight Linked Forms of the Ruyi Heavenly Demon
- The signature saber art of Qiu’s sect, developed through nearly a century of contributions and refinement by successive experts 193.
- Covers Saber Intent, Saber Qi, medicine preparation, and saber forging rather than functioning solely as a collection of attacks 193.
- Requires the wielder to continually adjust lures, blocks, force, openings, and finishing blows to an opponent’s reactions, placing extraordinary demands on concentration 184.
- Near its peak, its complexity condenses into a single observation and a single opening slash, earning it the alternate name Divine Saber Slash 184.
- Allows Saber Intent and physical power to act in different directions. Qiu uses this property to meet Lu Shuangyan’s sword and Chu Tianshu’s palm simultaneously 183.
- Chu Tianshu considers it among the finest local martial arts, with exceptional future potential. However, reliance on the treasured saber helps a practitioner approach its peak while preventing complete perfection 184 193.
Heaven-Weeping Earth-Demon Blood-Transforming Divine Saber
- The most lethal of the early sect’s seven great evil arts 183.
- Despite its name, it is an internal art: practitioners nourish their blood with internal power and poison 183.
- At its peak, a single offered drop of blood can blast a living person apart 183.
- Its principles survive within the later supreme saber art. Qiu weaponizes blood lost through injury to delay pursuit 183.
Black Sha and Blood Sha
- Black Sha Demonic Art is foundational throughout the later Demonic Sect and compulsory within the Hall of Longevity 652.
- Wu Shanjun uses Blood Sha in conjunction with disciples’ Black Sha to lift thousands of followers into the air and remove them from danger 652.
- His control of the Life and Death Twin Sha transports an entire army without requiring its members to expend their own magical power 663.
- His Blood Sha river resonates with followers’ cultivation, carries them into Incense Valley’s defenses, and raises walls against incoming attacks 664.
Essence Harvesting and Cultivation Risks
- Most Demonic Sect cultivation methods draw blood essence from injured creatures nearby, even without deliberate targeting. More severely injured victims can die from the loss 643.
- Advanced branches refine and compress gathered essence and resentment, avoiding the conspicuous black smoke and ghostly cries associated with ordinary demonic practitioners 643.
- Demonic elements hidden within other cultivation systems can cause later mental corruption or allow Demonic Sect opponents to disrupt a practitioner’s magical power 657.
- The oasis’s earth Qi helps disciples restrain cultivation deviation and loss of sanity, but their reliance on it heavily depletes the site 670.
- The heavenly fragrant flower rain associated with Chu Tianshu’s breakthrough can dissolve cultivation steeped in vicious Sha. A concealed demonic practitioner loses his cultivation and dies after encountering it 657.
Divination
- The Wilderness Sacred Temple’s nine halls support large-scale calculations requiring multiple experts and accumulated spiritual potential 643.
- The joint divination predicts a Qingyun Dao Child approximately fifty years in advance. Three years later, the predicted appearance remains forty-seven years away 639 673.
- After the great divination, the halls must accumulate spiritual potential again. Wu Shanjun can still use the main hall independently, but with reduced depth and scope 643.
- Chu Tianshu later interprets the prophecy as a calculation of converging karmic influences rather than an unalterable destiny 673.
Headquarters & Equipment
Beyond the Pass
- Green jade staff — The earlier sect’s supreme symbol of authority, replaced by the saber approximately a century before Qiu’s confrontation with Chu Tianshu 182.
- Guardian treasured saber — A crescent-shaped weapon forged from extraordinary iron produced through a sect expert’s lifetime of experimentation in Thunderstorm Perilous Valley. Originally called a divine saber, it developed a Dharma Spirit and increasingly vicious demonic qualities through use with the sect’s saber art 193 485.
- Saber-manual token — Contains the Eight Linked Forms of the Ruyi Heavenly Demon and its associated cultivation, medicinal, and forging knowledge. Seized by Chu Tianshu 193.
- Cavalry escort — Qiu travels toward Flowing Cloud Manor with three hundred mounted guards 182.
Western Great Swamp
- Wilderness Sacred Temple — The alliance’s sacred center, situated in a comparatively clear, fertile oasis amid the marsh. Its nine halls and nine gardens date back to the founding patriarch 643 670.
- Nine gardens — Renovated and repurposed by the Hall of Longevity after prolonged infighting nearly ruined the complex. They accommodate cultivation facilities, animals, furnaces, and other specialized functions 643 670.
- Life-lamp towers — Four towers in the northwestern garden house the Hall of Longevity disciples’ life lamps, revealing their deaths at a distance 670.
- Dragon-Subduing Cauldron — Supports Wu Shanjun by gathering vicious Sha and refining it into usable essence faster than he expends it during the advance on Incense Valley 663.
- Samsara Disc — Wielded by Wu Shanjun to deflect an attack from Incense Valley’s Mysterious Fire Mirror 663.
- Demonic implements — Include skull artifacts, poisonous spines, blood-tainted weapons, and black jade hairpins that pierce their wearers’ bodies during cultivation 642 643 662 663.

- Incense Valley — Repels the consolidated demonic army with Chu Tianshu and Heavenly Wolf Sect support 663 664 667.
Legacy
- Chu Tianshu uses the sect’s signature saber technique as the foundation for Heavenly Heart Sorrowful Demon Slash, optimizing it with evil-spirit material to turn fluctuations of emotion into physical killing power 277.
- The captured crescent-shaped guardian saber remains in his possession much later, attracting a two-headed black serpent to his home through its treasure presence 485.
- The later alliance’s defeat makes cooperation and cultivation exchanges among the righteous sects more practical by sharply reducing the danger of demonic infiltration 669.
