Background / History

Creation, Merit, and Isolation

Nuwa created the human race and earned merit by mending the heavens after the heavenly pillar collapsed. She once benefited from both the Demon Clan’s fortune and humanity’s fortune, making her unusually advantaged among the Saints 3 9 46.

Those advantages were gradually stripped away. Taishang Laozi established the Human Teaching and claimed a share of humanity’s fortune. During the Witch-Demon conflict, both sides massacred humans to forge weapons against their enemies. Other Saints obstructed Nuwa when she tried to intervene, damaging her relationship with humanity. The subsequent collapse of the Demon Clan’s fortune left her without the fortune she had formerly enjoyed 9.

Nuwa founded no teaching and largely withdrew from worldly struggles. After her elder brother Fuxi fell in a calamity and became humanity’s Heavenly Emperor, she lived mostly alone. Her occasional journeys generally took her to Fire Cloud Palace to visit him or to Kunlun Mountain to see the Queen Mother of the West 9 48.

The Temple Incident and Journey West

Nuwa initially descended in anger after Human Emperor Di Xin composed an insulting poem in her temple. The newly transmigrated Ye Xuan, now occupying Di Xin’s identity, challenged her manifestation with the Human Emperor Supreme Sword and humanity’s imperial fortune 1.

The confrontation changed when Nuwa unexpectedly heard his thoughts. He identified Zhunti as the instigator who had clouded Di Xin’s mind, intending to make Nuwa destroy Great Shang’s fortune and shoulder the tribulation’s karma. Nuwa investigated, discovered Zhunti’s concealed interference, withdrew her manifestations, and invited the Human Emperor west 1.

At Great Mount Sumeru, Ye Xuan spoke against Zhunti on her behalf. His accusations also revealed that Zhunti had stolen merit from her work mending the heavens—a theft Nuwa independently confirmed through divination 2 3.

Nuwa attacked Zhunti and gained the advantage through her superior collection of treasures. Her Human Creation Whip staggered his golden dharma body, though the strike did not injure him. Yuanshi Tianzun intervened before the battle could continue and required the Western Saints to compensate her 4 5 6.

She accepted the Six Roots Pure Bamboo, Eastern Green Lotus Treasure Banner, and roughly a dozen bodhi seeds to settle the debt. When the Ancestral Dragon’s corpse subsequently broke free and destroyed Mount Sumeru, Nuwa blocked Zhunti from reclaiming it, asserting that the dragon belonged to the East 6 7.

Cooperation with the Human Emperor

After leaving the West, Nuwa could neither locate the Ancestral Dragon nor explain the Human Emperor’s knowledge of concealed events. Hearing his thoughts about the Investiture of the Gods led her to suspect that he could perceive the future despite the tribulation’s chaotic heavenly secrets 8 9.

She began considering cooperation as a means to influence the tribulation and recover humanity’s fortune. Nevertheless, when Ye Xuan flirtatiously invited her to Changle Palace, she angrily swept him back to Chaoge 9.

As Yin Shang’s destiny strengthened, Nuwa summoned the world’s demons and dispatched the Three Demons of Xuanyuan Tomb to protect Di Xin and earn merit. She secretly attached a fragment of her will to the Nine-Tailed Fox, intending to hear the emperor’s thoughts through her 14 15.

Defending Di Xin

Ao Guang’s appearance in Chaoge and the Dragon Clan’s submission reinforced Nuwa’s suspicion that the Human Emperor was making preparations for the coming tribulation. She connected his struggle with Tongtian’s predicament and recognized a scheme by Yuanshi, Taishang, Zhunti, and Jieyin to seize humanity’s providence 32 35 37.

When Yuanshi attacked Di Xin with the Three Treasures Jade Ruyi, Nuwa sent her Red Embroidered Ball to protect him alongside Tongtian’s Qingping Sword. She rebuked Yuanshi for conduct unworthy of a Sage and stated that she had intervened to stop him from killing the Human Emperor 38 39 40.

Privately, Nuwa regarded this protection as repayment of her karmic debt to Di Xin. She also wanted to see how far he could go in contending with Heaven for his fate 39.

Building Her Own Force

Through Su Daji, Nuwa overheard Ye Xuan questioning her intelligence, criticizing her isolation, and planning to win her support. Although his insults enraged her, his criticism made her acknowledge how poorly she had used her former advantages 45 46.

She resolved to assemble a force from the demons under her authority and join the Human Emperor and Tongtian rather than maintain superficial civility with the other Saints. To obtain help managing that force, she sought out her longtime friend, the Queen Mother of the West 46 48.

At Kunlun, Nuwa declared her intention to enter the mortal world and confront the Saints who had repeatedly deceived her. Despite warnings that she and Tongtian would face four Saints, she refused to remain passive. The Queen Mother of the West agreed to accompany her, and Nuwa departed to prepare 49.

Appearance

Nuwa is described as tall and slender, wearing flowing immortal robes, with an exceptionally beautiful, heavenly countenance 2.

Personality

Nuwa is naturally simple and dislikes the Primordial World’s complicated affairs. Her long seclusion leaves her lonely and increasingly dissatisfied with immortal life. She confides that mortals’ emotions, desires, and brief lives have come to seem enviable beside her own endless existence 48.

Proud and sensitive to humiliation, she reacts strongly to deception and disrespect. She struggles to answer Zhunti’s verbal evasions and relies on Ye Xuan to argue her case, but refuses to accept a settlement that dismisses his wrongdoing as a misunderstanding 2 6.

Her attitude toward Ye Xuan combines gratitude, curiosity, irritation, and amusement. She appreciates his help while recognizing his attempts to use her and Tongtian against their opponents. His private insults anger her, yet she can reconsider her own conduct when his criticism exposes genuine weaknesses 39 45 46.

Her decision to enter the tribulation marks a rejection of her former passivity. She would rather risk confrontation than continue allowing the other Saints to dictate her position 49.
