Background / History
Search for the Jade Disc of Creation
Hongjun spent hundreds of millions of years traveling the Primordial World and gathering fragments of the Jade Disc of Creation, a treasure central to his Dao attainment. The last missing fragment had been concealed by Great Immortal Yangmei, who eventually planted it among treasures left with Ao Changsheng 4 6 8.
Before becoming a Sage, Hongjun taught Laozi, Yuanshi, and Tongtian on Mount Kunlun. Their instruction had already lasted more than a hundred thousand years when he sensed the missing fragment and interrupted a lecture to pursue it 5.
The fragment led him to Ao Changsheng’s secluded East Sea cultivation ground. Initially believing someone had carved territory out of the Primordial World, he nearly attacked with the Pangu Banner. After consulting the Heavenly Dao, he instead recognized that the region had been reconstructed into a small world. He declined an invitation to enter and negotiated with Ao Changsheng’s incarnation outside 6.
Hongjun obtained the fragment in exchange for the Qiankun Cauldron, Yellow Center Plum, and numerous other treasures and spirit roots. He accepted without bargaining: the completed Jade Disc proved substantially more effective than he had anticipated 7 8.
Sagehood and the Purple Firmament Lectures
After attaining the Dao, Hongjun established Purple Firmament Palace in Chaos and invited all those with sufficient affinity to hear his teachings. The restored Jade Disc drew him so deeply into contemplation that he forgot to instruct his attendants to open the palace gates 7 8.
His first sermon lasted three thousand years and explained the Immortal Dao through the Daluo realm. According to Dijiang, more than ninety percent of the mighty figures present switched to Hongjun’s cultivation system. When Houtu asked for a path suitable for the Witch Race, Hongjun directed her toward Ao Changsheng rather than offer a method incompatible with the witches’ constitution 9 10.
Hongjun secretly guided Gonggong to the secluded Dao field through the Heavenly Dao, hoping to investigate Ao Changsheng’s strength. Gonggong’s emergence as a Quasi-Sage after only a hundred years exceeded Hongjun’s expectations. Confirmation that Ao Changsheng was a native dragon, rather than a revived Chaos Demon God, eased his suspicions 20.
In the subsequent three-thousand-year lecture, Hongjun taught the method of Severing the Three Corpses. He then formally accepted the Three Purities and Nüwa as disciples, with Jieyin and Zhunti as registered disciples. He also appointed Eastern King Duke and Western Queen Mother to govern the unaffiliated immortals and distributed treasures through the Treasure Distribution Rock 23 24 25.
Confrontation with Yangmei
Shortly after becoming a Sage, Hongjun intercepted Yangmei in Chaos, intending to prevent the Chaos Demon God from leaving with knowledge of the Primordial World. Yangmei had already attained the Dao of Hunyuan and recovered his former Dao Fruit as the Chaos Demon God of Space 20.
Hongjun could not prevent Yangmei’s departure, even after deploying his supreme treasures. With the restored Jade Disc drawing upon the Heavenly Dao, however, he forced Yangmei to swear a Great Dao Oath to stay away from the Primordial World and conceal information about it. Hongjun remained concerned that unknown methods in Chaos might circumvent the oath 20.
Balancing the Witches and Demons
After Ao Changsheng nearly killed Dijun and Eastern Emperor Taiyi, Hongjun intervened diplomatically. He argued that the two established demon emperors were the most reliable counterweights to the Witch Race; replacing them would introduce too many uncertainties. He traded the sealed Jianmu sapling for Ao Changsheng’s promise to spare them during the great tribulation 30 31 32.
Hongjun tacitly permitted the establishment of the Heavenly Court. Privately, he explained that gathering the fate of the myriad races, unaffiliated immortals, and major cultivators would complete his preparations for merging with the Dao once the Sage positions were distributed 33.
During the first Witch-Demon war, Hongjun stopped the “Pangu” summoned by the Twelve Ancestral Witches and dispersed their formation. Citing the Witch Race’s prolonged slaughter, he confined every witch to Mount Buzhou for a million years, preventing the Demon Race’s extermination. Ao Changsheng interpreted the outcome as deliberate manipulation that preserved the balance while trapping both factions in their conflict 37.
Intervention in Ao Changsheng’s World Creation
After merging with the Dao, Hongjun sensed the destruction and rebirth of a world created by Ao Changsheng above the East Sea. He directed Heavenly Dao power through the Jade Disc and manifested the Eye of the Heavenly Dao. Ao Changsheng received merit for strengthening the Primordial World’s origin, but regretted that its Heavenly Dao had taken control of his creation 45.
Appearance
- Elderly Daoist: Appears as an old man wearing Daoist robes 6 30.
- Unimposing stature: His body is described as less than towering, contrasting with the immense summoned “Pangu” whose fist he blocks 37.
- Controlled expression: Usually maintains a placid or expressionless face, even while investigating threats or dealing with hostile factions 6 20 37.
Personality
Hongjun is cautious without being timid. He pursues the Jade Disc fragment despite recognizing that its appearance might be a trap, yet restrains his initial anger at Ao Changsheng’s unusual territory long enough to investigate. His dealings with Ao Changsheng combine courtesy, concealed tests, and a willingness to negotiate rather than provoke an uncertain opponent 6 20 32.
His pursuit of Dao merger makes him selective about involvement in others’ conflicts. He refuses to accumulate unnecessary karma, even contemplating leaving his own disciples unaided if they recklessly antagonize Ao Changsheng. Nevertheless, he intervenes decisively when the balance between witches and demons is threatened 15 23 37.
Hongjun is also capable of petty retaliation. When cultivators loudly beg him for treasures, he places the treasures outside the palace, where stronger cultivators claim them first; many of the petitioners receive little or nothing. His deep absorption in cultivation can also make him forget practical matters, including opening the doors for his own sermon 8 25.
