Background / History
Church Performances
Sarasa participated in the cartoon performances organized around Chrollo at Meteor City’s church. After one screening, she imitated the Cleanup Squad’s signature hand gesture and playfully voiced Uvogin’s admiration for Chrollo, helping ease the tension as Uvogin joined the group. She also tried to stop Sheila from insulting Carl 5.
When she discovered that only three cartoon volumes remained, Sarasa quietly left the group’s naming discussion to search for more videotapes. Remembering that Chrollo had found a tape at Garbage Mountain No. 7, she headed toward the southern district, hoping to bring back something that would make everyone happy 7.
Attack in the Outskirts
During a garbage-cleaning assignment, Sarasa collected Carl after an elder threatened to reclaim Carl’s shack for missing work. On their way to the Seventh Garbage District, she tried to discuss Carl’s conflict with Sheila, but abandoned her attempt at reconciliation when Carl called Sheila an enemy 7.
Sarasa later wandered into a grove of dead trees while searching for videotapes. As acid rain approached, Carl followed her footprints and discovered that seven adults were pursuing her. Carl reached her after a thug seized her wrist, killed the captor, and carried her away, leaving a Bomb Pomegranate to explode among the pursuers 8 9.
Because Carl’s manor could not yet accommodate outsiders, it offered Sarasa no refuge. Despite an injured ankle, she agreed to flee alone. Carl wrapped a rain cloak around her and directed her toward Garbage Mountain No. 7 and the southern district, then turned back to draw away the remaining pursuer 9 10.
Sarasa reached home covered in blood, suffering from wounds, a high fever, and lung damage from the acid rain. On waking, she insisted that Hank carry her out to find Carl. She alerted the troupe that Carl was still being chased and accompanied the search despite her condition. Hank eventually withdrew her as another downpour threatened her health 10 11 12.
Carl later restored Sarasa’s health with a slice of Qi and Blood Pumpkin. In thanks, her foster mother gave Carl corn cakes and repaired the borrowed cloak 15.
Nen Awakening
During Carl’s three-month farming seclusion, Sarasa repeatedly visited the shack without finding Carl. At their reunion, she greeted Carl with the Orange Warrior’s dubbing script in hand and volunteered to fetch the other performers 16.
Sarasa subsequently awakened Nen with the troupe inside Carl’s manor. During Water Divination, her cup showed no visible change, leaving her affinity uncertain. After the children learned that the manor’s clean water would not run out, she used the Cleanup Squad gesture to encourage them about Meteor City’s future 18 19.
Old Will’s Death and Departure
When Carl discovered signs of trouble at the church, Sarasa remained in the manor because she was too young to receive a search assignment. She worried about Grandpa Will and stayed behind when Carl went to investigate. After Old Will was found tortured to death, Carl returned her to her adoptive mother’s care 34 35 36.
Sarasa voted to ask Lianke to accept the troupe as disciples. During their appeal, she pleaded with Lianke not to be angry with Carl and promised that the children could collect and sell trash to repay their debt. Lianke accepted the troupe and allowed them time to say goodbye to their foster mothers 44 46.
The truth about Old Will’s killer was deliberately kept from Sarasa. Chrollo asked Carl not to tell her because she was still young; Franklin later stopped himself from revealing more when he noticed her nearby during the confrontation over Sheila 45 49.
Sarasa left Meteor City with the troupe for Lianke’s home in the Mist Forest. When rooms were assigned, Carl offered to share with her and carried her upstairs asleep 50.
Appearance
- Hair: Worn in twin ponytails; she also wears a bow near her ear 5 46.
- Build: Small and frail, with ribs prominent enough for Carl to feel them while carrying her 9.
- Clothing: Seen wearing an oil-stained skirt and straw sandals while working and searching for videotapes 7 8.
Personality
Sarasa is cheerful and inventive even amid Meteor City’s refuse. While cleaning garbage, she sings, skips between scrap heaps, and strings rusty gears into a wind chime. Her enthusiasm also drives her search for videotapes: she wants the performances to continue and imagines how happy new cartoons will make her companions 7 8.
She tries to preserve harmony within the group, restraining Sheila’s insults and attempting to reconcile her with Carl. Her loyalty becomes more forceful when someone is in danger: despite fever, painful breathing, and freshly bandaged wounds, she refuses to abandon the search for Carl 5 7 10 11.
Sarasa is playful and curious rather than solemn about learning Nen, asking about its categories and pulling a face when Carl tells her not to interrupt. She is also earnest about responsibility, offering the children’s scavenging income to repay Lianke rather than treating their inability to pay as an excuse 18 46.
