Background / History
Hisoka had studied under Lianke for approximately one year before accompanying Carl to Meteor City. Despite living in the nearby Mist Forest and seeing visitors from the city call on his teacher, he had never entered Meteor City himself. He also owed Lianke tuition 33 38.
By Carl’s arrival, Hisoka had already established his Nen abilities and considered his own path set, making Lianke’s introductory lessons largely a review for him. Alongside his training, he regularly prepared and served meals for the household 24 25 28.
Appearance
Hisoka is introduced as a pink-haired boy wearing a burgundy shirt and clown-like makeup, with a playing card spinning at his fingertips 23.
- Facial markings: A teardrop and a star. The teardrop is dark red at his introduction and green during a later spar 23 31 32.
- Eyes: Narrow and expressive, frequently narrowing further when his interest is aroused 24 26.
- Footwear: Patent-leather boots 35.
- Cooking attire: An apron bearing dark red stains 24 28.
- Nen aura: Pale purple 23 33.
- Lasting injury: Carl breaks half of one of his molars; his speech subsequently carries a slight whistle 31 32.
Personality
Hisoka treats combat as pleasure and repeatedly describes his interest in others as “love.” He eagerly accepts the assignment to beat Carl during training and remains interested because Carl improves quickly. His fascination extends to Bomb Pomegranates, whose combination of danger and visual beauty strongly appeals to him 25 26 27 31.
His playful manner can give way to lethal hostility. After Carl injures his jaw and breaks his tooth, Hisoka releases killing intent and approaches the exhausted Carl until Lianke intervenes. Lianke had arranged their repeated sparring partly to temper his extreme disposition, but concludes that the effort has accomplished little 31.
Despite his appetite for fighting, Hisoka recognizes unfavorable odds. He retreats when Carl threatens him with a Bomb Pomegranate and avoids fighting the Phantom Troupe together, judging that a confrontation with a double-digit number of Nen users would kill him. He prefers a one-on-one duel to a group battle 23 41.
His attachment to Lianke includes jealousy: watching her embrace and reassure Carl briefly wipes the smile from his face. He nevertheless obeys her commands, including her order to withdraw after Carl’s surrender 26 31.
Abilities & Skills
Bungee Gum
Hisoka’s signature Nen ability appears as pale purple aura and can form adhesive strands. The passages also call it Bungee Love 24 27 31.
- Disarming: Snatches a Bomb Pomegranate from Carl’s hand 27.
- Restraint and pulling: Wraps around Carl’s chest and pulls Carl into the air during sparring 31.
- Ceiling adhesion: Allows Hisoka to attach himself overhead while hiding in the church 40.
- Object handling: Wraps around Bomb Pomegranates, with aura extending into their upper branches 36.
- Countermeasure: Lianke can sever its strands with an aura-formed knifehand 31.
Texture Surprise
Also called Texture Illusion, this ability conceals Hisoka’s techniques or appearance 27 40 41.
- Conceals Bungee Gum during Carl’s training 27.
- Forms a thin, paper-like covering over his body to disguise him against the church ceiling 40 41.
- His ceiling disguise leaves a dry patch while rain dampens the surrounding surface, allowing Feitan to locate him 41.
- A thin black film over his joker card disappears to reveal red beneath it 45.
Nen Fundamentals and Perception
Hisoka demonstrates several foundational Nen techniques during lessons and field encounters.
- Zetsu: Suppresses his presence so effectively that his outline seems to merge with a tree’s shadow; he also maintains Zetsu while hiding above the Troupe 25 41.
- Ren: Pressures ordinary Elders’ Guard members with threatening aura, prompting Fyodor to pull Fak back and retreat 33.
- En: Detects that the people surrounding Carl in the church are Nen users because their aura is not leaking unchecked 35.
- Aura control: Uses pale purple aura to hold a house of cards together against strong balcony winds 45.
Close-Quarters Combat
Hisoka initially overwhelms Carl even while announcing where his punches will land. He exploits Carl’s reflex of closing their eyes before impact to conceal the timing of his attacks 27.
- Repeatedly targets Carl’s face and lower abdomen 27 31.
- Combines punches with Bungee Gum’s pulling force 31.
- His predictable target selection eventually lets Carl gamble on an abdominal strike and counterattack his jaw 31.
- Forces his displaced jaw back into position after being struck 31.
Playing Cards
Hisoka carries and manipulates playing cards both recreationally and as weapons.
- Coats multiple cards in Nen aura when preparing for confrontation 33 35.
- Carves a detailed smiling clown face into a bus’s bulletproof window with a card 32.
- Builds elaborate houses of cards during lessons and at night 25 26 45.
Cooking
Hisoka prepares breakfast and dinner at Lianke’s residence. His meals include bread, hot milk, blue jam, roasted pork chops, and berries. Lianke later complains that his cooking is repetitive 24 28 40.
Equipment / Items
- Playing cards — Used for tricks, card houses, cutting, and aura-coated attacks 25 32 33.
- Bomb Pomegranates — Obtained from Carl as payment for cooperation and fetching Lianke; Hisoka is particularly attracted to their explosions 27 35 36 38.
- Free lifetime bus tickets — Belong to Lianke; Hisoka supplies one to Carl for their journey to Meteor City 32.
- Qi and Blood Pumpkin — After two wedges leave him feeling hot, he seeks more; Carl gives him a whole pumpkin rather than trading for information 45.
Relationships
- Lianke — Master and creditor. Hisoka obeys her instructions but is subject to her physical punishment. She attempts to moderate his temperament through sparring with Carl 27 31 33.
- Carl — Junior fellow disciple, training partner, and a promising future opponent. Hisoka volunteers to accompany Carl to Meteor City because he does not want to lose someone whose growth entertains him 26 31 32.
- Chrollo Lucilfer — A potential opponent whose resolve fascinates Hisoka. Chrollo prevents Feitan from attacking him after his concealment is exposed 41.
- Machi — Detects Hisoka’s concealed presence in the church. Later approaches closely enough to surprise him without his noticing 41 46.
- Phantom Troupe — Carl’s companions and prospective sparring opponents, not an established affiliation for Hisoka in these chapters. Their acceptance as Lianke’s disciples delights him because it provides more people to fight 35 41 46.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Carl’s Nen Training
Hisoka first approaches Carl with aura gathered in his outstretched hand. Carl refuses the handshake and reaches for a Bomb Pomegranate, forcing him to retreat. His subsequent report that Carl could see Bungee Gum prompts the revelation that Carl already possesses Nen aura 23 24.
Lianke assigns Hisoka to train Carl through combat. Over the following month, their bouts become increasingly severe, culminating in Carl’s successful counterattack to Hisoka’s jaw. Lianke stops Hisoka from continuing after Carl surrenders and sends him into the forest to vent his anger 26 27 31.
Escort to Meteor City
Hisoka accompanies the injured Carl back to Meteor City under Lianke’s protection order, having also volunteered for the trip. In the north district, he intimidates an Elders’ Guard patrol with his aura 32 33.
At the church, Hisoka mistakes the Nen-using Phantom Troupe for enemies surrounding Carl and prepares to intervene. Carl explains that they are companions and persuades him to leave. Bomb Pomegranates then secure his agreement to fetch Lianke 35 36.
On his return, Hisoka gives Carl a gold brooch found beneath Old Will’s corpse and suggests asking Lianke to use her Meteor City connections. Lianke identifies the brooch’s crow emblem as the black market’s death bird 38.
Observing the Phantom Troupe
Left at the church to guard Old Will’s restored body, Hisoka conceals himself on the ceiling and witnesses the Troupe’s discussion of the murder and Chrollo’s declaration against the world’s oppression 39 40 41.
Machi senses him, and Feitan identifies the dry patch left by his disguise. Once exposed, Hisoka accepts Chrollo’s offer to withdraw rather than fight the entire group 41.
Hisoka later offers Carl information about the companions’ secret in exchange for pumpkin, but Carl declines to investigate behind their backs. When the Troupe becomes Lianke’s disciples, Hisoka celebrates the prospect of new sparring partners 45 46.
