Background / History
Lianke grew up in Meteor City, where fighting was part of her childhood. Her experience of deprivation later helps her recognize Carl’s discomfort with receiving generous meals and care. She eventually moved outside the city because she loathed its elders 27 28 43.
She studied Nen under an unnamed master, to whom she described Nen Abilities as “the ultimate art.” Awakening her own Aura Nodes nearly exhausted her aura—a difficult experience that makes Carl’s supposed natural awakening particularly enviable to her 24 25.
Before accepting Carl, Lianke had already taken Hisoka as a disciple. By the time she seeks Luona’s help finding the Phantom Troupe, Hisoka has spent approximately a year with her 22 38.
Appearance
Lianke has blond hair, emerald-green eyes, and a jade-white complexion. When Carl first visits, she appears barefoot on an upstairs windowsill, her loose hair blowing in the night wind 21 22.
- Clothing: Faded wisteria-patterned pajamas at her introduction; pale-purple clothing and silk gloves in later scenes 21 24 46.
- Scent: Irises, sometimes mingled with the formalin associated with her work 22 26.
- Aura: Pale purple, often shaped into thin, fabriclike coverings or threads 25 38.
- Accessories: A parasol, fan, and emerald-viper ring 25 27 39.
Personality
Lianke combines teasing, vanity, and harsh discipline with genuine affection for her pupils. She resents interruptions to her beauty sleep, frequently pinches Carl’s cheeks, and enjoys making her disciple respond with exaggerated respect. Her lessons nevertheless provide precise, practical corrections rather than punishment without purpose 21 22 25 27 43.
She is especially sensitive to the emotional wounds of Meteor City’s children. Recognizing Carl’s loneliness, she offers an embrace and permission to cry; at meals, she insists that her disciple eat enough to support training and physical growth. Her enthusiasm for talented students is tempered by concern over whether she can properly guide an entire group 26 28 46.
Her compassion has firm boundaries. She does not consider herself responsible for strangers and sees no reason to intervene when her disciples retaliate against Sheila. Likewise, although Old Will was her friend, she does not regard avenging his death as her obligation. Her initial refusal to search for Carl’s companions changes immediately when she learns that all ten have awakened Nen 38 50.
Abilities & Skills
Nen Control
Lianke demonstrates fine control over her pale-purple aura and teaches the Four Major Principles of Nen 25.
- Ten: Compresses aura into an extremely thin covering against her skin. She teaches that defensive strength depends on thickness, while efficiency depends on precision 25.
- Aura adjustment: A touch from her fingertips disrupts Carl’s poorly controlled aura and helps reshape it into a fine mesh 25.
- Ren: Projects aura several meters outward and conveys sharply contrasting emotions, including killing intent and affection 25.
- Zetsu instruction: Explains its recovery and concealment functions while warning that it leaves a user with greatly reduced defense and perception 25.
- Limitation: She explicitly notes that she is not an Enhancement specialist and fears that Bomb Pomegranates exploding at close range could kill her 22.
Corpse Restoration and Wound Treatment
Lianke uses Nen threads to reconstruct damaged remains and can apply her aura to living injuries 31 38.
- Restores Old Will’s mutilated corpse with pale-purple threads resembling fluttering butterflies; the repaired skin appears intact apart from its deathly pallor 38.
- Seals Carl’s ruptured blood vessels with web-like vortices of aura, stopping an abdominal wound from bleeding 31.
- Examines Carl with Nen to confirm that the injury poses no immediate serious danger 31.
- Treats corpse preservation as part of her professional duties, warning that untreated remains will rot and attract maggots 43.
Combat and Intimidation
Lianke can intervene decisively in her disciples’ fights and incapacitate others through physical force or hostile aura 27 31 39.
- Knocks Hisoka unconscious during Carl’s training 27.
- Forms an aura knifehand to sever Hisoka’s Bungee Gum and prevent a further attack on the exhausted Carl 31.
- Releases malice that leaves a casino guard unable to speak, then collapses him into convulsions within three seconds 39.
Teaching and Assessment
Lianke emphasizes fundamentals, resource management, and survival before developing an individual Nen Ability 25 26.
- Conducts Carl’s affinity test, identifying Conjuration when the water becomes pale-golden crystals 26.
- Uses supervised sparring with Hisoka to train Carl’s defensive control, perception, and reactions 26 27.
- Identifies Carl’s habit of closing the eyes under attack and explains how Hisoka exploits it 27.
- Warns against excessive aura consumption, abandoning defense for an all-out strike, and developing a Nen Ability without sufficient preparation 25 28 31.
- Teaches Carl to assess potential threats through age, instinct, and observation of the eyes 26.
- Intends the sparring arrangement to moderate Hisoka’s extreme temperament as well as strengthen Carl, though she finds little improvement in Hisoka’s disposition 31.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Accepting Carl
Old Will identifies Lianke as a Nen user, prompting Carl to travel to the Forest of Mist. The first meeting begins badly: Carl wakes her at night and finds her courtyard stacked with corpses. Lianke demands an enormous tuition fee, but accepts Bomb Pomegranates as payment after learning their explosive power. Carl becomes her second disciple 20 21 22.
Initially unaware that Carl can already use aura, Lianke is astonished by the claim of having been born able to sense it. She proceeds with foundational instruction and places Carl under Hisoka’s practical training 24 25 26.
Old Will’s Death and the Missing Children
After Carl suffers a serious sparring injury, Lianke treats the wound and orders Hisoka to accompany her disciple back to Meteor City as protection. Following Old Will’s murder, she comes to the church, restores his body, and urges Carl to leave the increasingly chaotic city 31 32 36 38.
Learning that Carl’s ten missing companions are Nen users changes her priorities. She takes Carl to the Keike Casino and asks Luona to search for them, deliberately withholding their Nen status. Luona arranges searches and warns recycling companies against taking children 38 39 42.
Lianke leaves the casino after Pike arrives. She later explains the Keike Family’s attempt to cultivate Carl through potential marriage partners, while also citing the church’s untreated corpses as unfinished work 43.
Taking the Phantom Troupe as Disciples
At Old Will’s funeral, Lianke confirms that Carl’s companions possess Nen and charges ten million Jenny for restoring the body. She and Carl privately arrange to use the unpaid bill as a pretext for recruiting the children 44 46.
During their staged negotiation, Sarasa’s promise to repay the debt through scavenging makes Lianke question whether she has gone too far. She also worries that financially pressured disciples might resent her or cease acknowledging her once their debts are paid. Nevertheless, she accepts them and gives them half a day to say farewell to their foster mothers 46.
Lianke subsequently takes the group to the Forest of Mist aboard bus number 16 and assigns them shared rooms in her house 50.
Services and Fees
| Service / Transaction | Stated Terms |

| Bomb Pomegranate payment | Values each fruit at 50,000 Jenny; accepts 24 as an initial payment of 1.2 million Jenny 22. |
| Courtyard damage | Adds 50 million Jenny to Carl’s debt for damaged stone slabs 31. |
| Old Will’s restoration | Charges the Phantom Troupe 10 million Jenny 44. |
| Phantom Troupe tuition proposal | Carl proposes 50 million Jenny per disciple, with interest on unpaid tuition, during their coordinated recruitment negotiation 46. |
Equipment / Items
- Viper’s Kiss: A silver ring bearing an emerald viper, the Keike Family crest. It identifies its bearer as an important family member or friend and secures Lianke an escort inside the casino 39.
- Sandalwood fan: Appears between Hisoka and Carl when Lianke stops their dangerous spar 31.
- Parasol: Used while teaching outdoors and walking through Meteor City 25 43.
- Bomb Pomegranates: Accepted from Carl in place of cash tuition 22.

- Carl Tam — Second disciple. Lianke provides technical instruction, protection, medical treatment, and maternal reassurance; Carl later helps her recruit the Phantom Troupe 22 25 26 31 46.
- Hisoka — Earlier disciple and Carl’s senior fellow student. She uses him as a sparring instructor, disciplines him physically, and entrusts him with Carl’s protection 26 27 31 36.
- Old Will — Friend of nearly ten years. His name earns Carl an audience and a tuition discount; Lianke later restores his remains 21 22 38.
- Luona Keike — Friend and influential contact. Their relationship includes sharp teasing, hospitality, and practical assistance in searching Meteor City 39 40 42.
- Pike Keike — Luona’s husband and a Meteor City elder. His arrival prompts Lianke to leave the casino, reflecting her longstanding dislike of the elders 43.
