Background / History
Before transmigrating, Liang Sheng grew up in an orphanage and became an overworked office employee. Anime was a major interest, giving Carl familiarity with the world and its future prominent figures. Liang Sheng died at a desk before awakening in Carl’s body in Meteor City in 1984 1.
The original Carl survived through church charity and scavenging. A dedicated seed collector, the child hoped to grow vegetables despite Meteor City’s polluted soil. Carl’s foster mother had died rescuing Sheila from kidnappers; afterward, Carl lived independently and maintained few connections beyond seed exchanges with Chrollo 1 4 5.
The original body died from a fever associated with exposure to polluted rain. The transmigrator inherited its memories and survival reflexes, but changes in behavior briefly made Chrollo suspicious. Initially seeking the Phantom Troupe’s protection, Carl soon acquired Mole Manor and promised to fulfill the original owner’s dream of making plants grow in Meteor City 1 2.
Appearance
- Hair and build: Black-haired, initially small, thin, and undernourished 6 25.
- Early clothing: Patched clothes, worn straw sandals, and a crude black-cloth cloak. Carl deliberately reapplies soot after washing to avoid standing out in Meteor City 3.
- Later clothing: Scavenged black combat boots and a black robe modified with numerous pockets for Bomb Pomegranates 8 21.
- Physical development: Daily Qi and Blood Pumpkin consumption produces noticeable growth, increased strength, and sharper senses over three months 16.
- Nen aura: Pale golden 18 24.
Personality
Carl initially prioritizes survival over conventional morality. Joining the troupe is a calculated means of securing protection, collecting seeds, and converting the manor’s resources into influence. Carl explicitly envisions nurturing powerful companions, establishing a foothold in Meteor City, and building an interest group capable of protecting her 1 13.
That pragmatism coexists with genuine attachment. Carl risks her life to rescue Sarasa and is deeply affected when Chrollo and the others worry about the personal cost of providing Nen Komugi. Their concern contrasts with the neglect and abuse remembered from her previous life 8 9 14 23.
Carl is cautious about unfamiliar people and untested knowledge, but receptive to competent instruction. She seeks an experienced Nen teacher rather than treating anime knowledge as sufficient, and Lianke’s precise corrections earn sincere respect. Under sustained provocation, however, Carl can abandon caution: Sheila’s remarks about her foster mother provoke a knife attack, while Hisoka’s repeated beatings culminate in a reckless counterstrike 5 19 24 25 31.
Abilities & Skills
Mole Manor
A system-controlled farming space activated by a pumpkin seed. Its initialization detects a Dark Continent contaminant and loads a purified version of Mole’s World 1 2.
- Rapid entry and exit: Carl’s initial test takes less than a second, including time spent collecting a handful of soil 3.
- Concealment: Retreating inside allows Carl to evade Xini while he searches the surrounding woods for hours 9.
- Outside-view panel: Displays the exterior and can be enlarged for companions to inspect 11 34.
- Storage and retrieval: Seeds, crops, supplies, and water containers can be stored or summoned 2 13 19.
- Guest access: Outsiders cannot enter before owner Level 10. By Level 50, Carl can admit and release the troupe 9 17 34.
- Water supply: The watering can replenishes endlessly, providing water for irrigation and personal use 3.
Special Crop Cultivation
Carl inherits extensive farming experience and can examine seeds and crops through system information. This allows her to distinguish viable seeds from dead or roasted ones 2 16.
| Crop | Growth / Use | Effects and Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Qi and Blood Pumpkin | Initially takes 72 hours to mature 2. | Nourishes the body, heals injuries and deficiencies, and improves physical condition. A slice restores Sarasa’s health; the system states that consuming roughly one hundred pumpkins can produce robust flesh and blood 6 15. |
| Bomb Pomegranate | Takes six hours to mature 2. | An explosive fruit with a six-meter lethal radius. Carl instructs Chrollo to twist the twig twice, pull it out, throw the fruit, and run. Its effectiveness against Nen users remains untested in Carl’s early assessment 5 11 14. |
| Nen Komugi | Takes 24 hours to mature and requires manor spring water 6. | Roughly one hundred stalks safely awaken Nen aura; continued consumption increases aura quantity. Each stalk provides thirty grains. It does not grant a developed Nen Ability 6 14 17. |
| Seven-Day Flower | Rare seeds supplied by Luona through Sophie 47. | Identified as capable of reviving the dead for seven days. Carl discovers the effect, but no use is documented in the supplied passages 47. |
Nen
Carl is a Conjurer whose Water Divination crystallizes water into pale golden material 26.
- Ten: Initially wasteful and difficult to maintain; improves through Lianke’s corrections and Hisoka’s combat training 25 27 35.
- Physical reinforcement: Aura enhances bodily activity and strength 19.
- Focused offense: Can concentrate aura into a powerful punch, demonstrated against Hisoka 31.
- Limitations: Carl remains substantially outmatched by Hisoka in ordinary sparring. Concentrating everything into offense sacrifices defense and can exhaust her reserves 27 31.
- Ability development: Lianke forbids Carl from developing a personal Nen Ability without permission. No completed personal Hatsu is documented 25.
Survival and Combat
- Scavenger’s agility: The inherited body is accustomed to climbing garbage mountains and moving quietly 1.
- Local navigation: Retains knowledge of Meteor City’s alleys, routes, and garbage districts, though some less familiar memories are inaccessible 3 7.
- Tracking: Follows Sarasa’s footprints, counts additional pursuers, and uses elevated ground to locate them during rain 8.
- Knife combat: Kills Sarasa’s captor with a dagger strike to the throat 9.
- Ambush tactics: Leaves a primed Bomb Pomegranate with a corpse to catch pursuing thugs in the explosion 9.
Dimensional Fishing
The Dimensional Fish Pond connects to dimensional space and can retrieve items from other worlds without stated world restrictions 36.
- Fishing requires fruit-funded bait or nets.
- Bait catches one item at a time; nets can catch five kinds at once.
- Carl’s first attempt uses basic bait on a day when plants have the highest catch rate 36.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Concealed blade: Initially a sharpened piece of metal; later carries a dagger in her sleeve 1 5 9.
- Modified black robe: Extra pockets in the sleeves, chest, and trousers accommodate a loadout of twenty-six Bomb Pomegranates 21.
- Keike Family ring: A bronze pinky ring bearing the family crest, gifted by Luona. Casino staff treat Carl respectfully upon recognizing it 39 41 42.
- Death-bird brooch: A gold brooch supplied by Hisoka; Lianke identifies its crow-like emblem as a black-market mark 38.
- Fishing rod: Found at the newly unlocked Dimensional Fish Pond 36.
Relationships
- Chrollo Lucilfer — The original Carl’s friend and seed-trading partner. Chrollo risks continuing into the outskirts to search for Carl, invites her into the troupe, and becomes a trusted planning partner 1 11 13 20 46.
- Lianke — Nen teacher who accepts Carl as her second disciple. Her practical instruction earns Carl’s respect, and she later helps search for the missing troupe members 22 25 38 39.
- Hisoka — Senior fellow disciple and harsh sparring partner. Carl distrusts him, but also purchases his help with Bomb Pomegranates 23 24 27 31 36.
- Sarasa — Companion whom Carl rescues from kidnappers and heals with pumpkin. Carl later offers to share a room with her at Lianke’s home 9 15 50.
- Machi — Declares Carl her friend through intuition, shares snacks with her, and later helps with an improvised clothing adjustment 4 13.
- Sheila — Longstanding enemy associated with the death of Carl’s foster mother. Sheila’s refusal to acknowledge the rescue provokes Carl’s attempt to kill her 5 7.
- Foster mother — Died protecting Sheila from kidnappers. Her memory remains an intense emotional trigger inherited from the original Carl 5 6.
- Old Will — Church priest who directs Carl toward Lianke. His murder draws Carl into efforts to locate and protect the troupe during their search for revenge 22 34 37 38.
- Luona — Keike Family patron who provides search assistance, a family ring, and rare seeds. She also attempts to cultivate a future marriage alliance, which Carl resists 39 41 43 47.
- Sophie Cake — Introduced as a prospective friend by Luona; later delivers rare seeds and arranges protection connected to the troupe’s foster families 42 47 50.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Establishing the Manor and Saving Sarasa
- Carl turns inherited seed collections into food and explosive weapons, escaping immediate dependence on scavenging 2 3 6.

Building the Phantom Troupe’s Strength
- Carl joins the newly named Phantom Troupe and introduces its members to Nen through her crops 13 14.
- Three months of farming expand the manor to Level 50 and provide enough Nen Komugi for the group’s awakening 16 17 18.
- Carl and Chrollo reject selling the manor’s clean water because the troupe is not yet strong enough to defend such a profitable business 19 20.
Training Under Lianke
- Carl pays toward tuition with Bomb Pomegranates and begins formal Nen study 22 25.
- A month of punishing practice produces visible improvement, but her successful strike against Hisoka also demonstrates the danger of sacrificing defense 27 31.
Old Will’s Death and the Move to the Forest
- Carl discovers damage and blood at the church, alerts the troupe, and supplies each search participant with twenty Bomb Pomegranates 34.
- After the children pursue revenge, Carl asks Lianke to retrieve them; the search brings her into contact with the Keike Family 38 39.
- Carl proposes converting the troupe’s unpaid mending fee into discipleship under Lianke. The children are accepted and relocate to the Forest of Mist after saying goodbye to their foster mothers 46 50.
