Background / History

The Nangong Family hosted a birthday banquet for its Family Head, attended by Venerable Yu Yi and disciples connected to Tianyan Peak. Nangong Wanyu hoped the occasion would allow her to see her mother, who was being kept within the family estate. The Family Head personally received the visiting group. 57 59

During the banquet, Jiang Wan and Nangong Wanyu discovered Wanyu's mother confined in a secluded courtyard, aged and weakened. The Family Head and Elder Lou Kun intended to extract her Water Spirit Root; the mother was later moved away through Jiang Wan's intervention. 61 62

The family repeatedly sought to reclaim Nangong Wanyu after she entered Venerable Yichen's protection. Its members attempted coercion, abduction, bounties, and eventually a Spiritual Sense Imprint and Puppet Technique to force her obedience. 76 212 239 386 388

As its conflict with Jiang Wan and the Myriad Talisman Sect escalated, the family mobilized unusually large numbers of Golden Core cultivators, attempted to seize sect disciples as bargaining chips, and openly broke relations with the sect after a proposed marriage alliance was rejected. 339 344 356

Internal hierarchy

The family distinguishes sharply between its direct and collateral bloodlines. Nangong Xiang identifies himself as direct lineage and treats Nangong Cui, a collateral relative, as no more than a guard. 283

• Family Head — Ordered or enabled the extraction of Nangong Wanyu's mother's Water Spirit Root and later sanctioned Wanyu's capture and control. He was killed by a Spirit Transmutation elder after bringing harm to the family. 62 387 388

Water Spirit Root exploitation

The Nangong Family deliberately cultivates women with Pure Yin Bodies and single Water Spirit Roots as resources for exchanges and cultivation-related benefits. Its arrangement with the Joyful Union Sect required it to provide a female cultivator with a Water Spirit Root every hundred years. 335

Nangong Wanyu's mother, a single Water Spirit Root cultivator, was considered particularly valuable. The family sought both to extract her root and later to retrieve her after she escaped its control. 62 344

Joyful Union Sect connection

Venerable Yichen's investigation found that the Nangong Family Head originated from the Joyful Union Sect after having been abducted and used as a cauldron by one of its elders. The family's governing methods were described as derived from that sect's practices. 335

The family also maintained an arrangement under which Water Spirit Root cultivators were supplied to the Joyful Union Sect, where several became cauldrons. 335

Secret Golden Core cultivation

The family secretly raised a substantial number of Golden Core cultivators, making its Golden Core force comparable to—or larger than—that of the Myriad Talisman Sect. Captured members admitted that many had been promoted through improper methods. 339 344
