Background / History

Xu Hengliang is Venerable Yichen's disciple and therefore Jiang Wan's Master's Nephew. Their first encounters were hostile: he tried to snatch a chicken leg, relied on his master's status, and was beaten by Jiang Wan after refusing to apologize. Venerable Yu Yi ruled that Jiang Wan had been right to stop him. 24 25

Jiang Wan later gave Xu Hengliang the Dao name Four-Nine, originally intended for her by Venerable Yu Yi. Shortly afterward, she fed him a Supreme Spirit Bone, causing his cultivation to leap from the third layer of Qi Refining to Late Qi Refining. The bone made him a target for cultivators seeking to extract it. 44 52

His family situation is fraught. Xu Hengcai, his paternal half-brother, attempted to murder him for the Supreme Spirit Bone. Later, his stepmother Mei Ji imprisoned and drugged him while arranging for his essence and Spirit Bone to be harvested; Jiang Wan and Venerable Yu Yi rescued him. 56 139 140 142

While exploring an ancient cave mansion, Xu Hengliang was accepted as the disciple of the residual soul Xuanyuan Yu and inherited a Heaven-Piercing Spiritual Treasure chessboard. He subsequently learned that Xuanyuan Yu was his deceased father, a Spirit Severing cultivator whose soul could continue existing for a limited time. 404 405 407

He is more cautious and pragmatic than Jiang Wan in dangerous situations, preferring cultivation, preparation, and withdrawal over taking unnecessary risks.
