Background / History

Childhood in Five Souls Village

Yan Zu regained his past-life memories after striking his head at three years old. Recognizing the world of Douluo and its dangers, he worried that his poor family and his parents’ modest strength would leave them vulnerable. His Check-in System activated that night, giving him a means to prepare before Martial Soul awakening 1.

He secretly practiced the Nine Yin Manual and incorporated its exercises into ordinary chores. He also shared cultivation methods with his parents, including the Vajra Chapter for Yan Hu. Their poverty was partly explained by their refusal to collect Spirit Hall subsidies after the deacon Ma Xiunuo harassed Su Qing 2 4 7 8.

Xiao Wu and Martial Soul Awakening

Yan Hu and Su Qing rescued an injured Xiao Wu and brought her home. Yan Zu helped treat her and reassured her when she awoke. She became part of the household, calling the younger boy “Little Brother A-Zu” 10 11.

After awakening his Twin Martial Souls at home, Yan Zu agreed to conceal them. Little Jade’s vitality naturally benefited Xiao Wu’s cultivation, and the two began training together. Their partnership eventually reached complete Martial Soul compatibility. When Xiao Wu confessed that she was a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soft Bone Rabbit in human form, Yan Zu accepted her and asked her to become his Dao companion 13 14 19 33.

Nuoding Academy and Civilizational Ambitions

Yan Zu moved to Nuoding City with his family and enrolled at Nuoding Academy. He defeated Tang San in their first dormitory confrontation, then challenged the evidence behind Yu Xiaogang’s precise Soul Ring age limits. He rejected Yu Xiaogang’s offer of discipleship and questioned contradictions in the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul 21 22 24.

Alongside cultivation, Yan Zu pursued cultural and technological development. He told stories to village children, achieved success with Star Dou Night Tales, and planned further adaptations of Blue Star literature. When Ning Fengzhi offered him a Soul Tool consultant position, he declined and instead proposed sharing technology to improve ordinary people’s lives 19 28 38.

Shrek Academy and Withdrawal

After five years of preparation, Yan Zu traveled toward Shrek with Xiao Wu and Ning Rongrong, keeping his true level hidden. On the journey, he helped rescue Zhu Zhuqing from attacking Soul Masters. At Shrek’s entrance trial, he coordinated the four newcomers against Zhao Wuji, using recovery, shields, movement, and targeted attacks to help them endure the test 41 42 47.

His time at Shrek included defeating Ma Hongjun after he bullied Cuihua, defeating Dai Mubai during an assessment, and earning three solo and five duo victories during five days at the Great Soul Arena. He also guided the forest hunt after persuading Oscar to relinquish the Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent to Meng Yiran 51 54 57 64.

Yan Zu increasingly rejected Shrek’s infighting and Flender’s encouragement of troublemaking. After Tang San attacked him with a venom-coated Sleeve Arrow, he warned Tang San against further provocation and subsequently left the academy with his companions 67 68 69 71.

Blue Tyrant Academy and the Dugu Family

As part of the Dawn Team, Yan Zu halted a match when Dugu Yan suffered a life-threatening poison backlash. He stabilized her privately and later agreed to investigate Dugu Bo’s longstanding poisoning. He declined Qin Ming’s invitation to Heaven Dou Royal Academy and traveled instead toward Blue Tyrant Academy 78 81.

At the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Yan Zu demonstrated poison purification, refined medicinal pills, and strengthened his own cultivation. He returned to Blue Tyrant Academy at level 55 with his fifth ring, reporting that Dugu Bo had been cured and Dugu Yan’s Martial Soul had evolved. Dugu Bo later formally accepted him as his god-grandson 95 98 103 108 109 115.

Ah Yin and Soul Spirit Cooperation

During a visit home, Yan Zu sought Ah Yin before attempting any action against the Blue Silver King. He hoped to prevent Tang San’s Blue Silver Emperor awakening without killing a kind Soul Beast. Finding Ah Yin weakened behind a waterfall, he began restoring her with Little Jade’s vitality 118 120.

Yan Zu subsequently presented suspicions about Tang Hao’s conduct and Tang San’s soul identity to Ah Yin. These were his interpretations and conjectures, not independently established facts. His account contributed to Ah Yin’s emotional collapse and growing hostility toward Tang Hao and Tang San, although he later expressed hope that she would find a purpose beyond hatred 123 124 125.

He also supported equal Soul Spirit Contracts, persuading Xuanjia to contract with Ning Rongrong after the group protected its clan. At Blue Tyrant Academy, he continued preparing medicines and teaching cultivation techniques, including helping Ye Lingling address the Nine Heart Begonia’s weaknesses 130 136 139.

Appearance

  • Eyes: Clear, pure black eyes compared to wet obsidian, with a calmness beyond his years 11 21.
  • Hair: Soft, silky black hair 21.
  • Complexion: Very fair skin; at six, his cheeks still retained some baby fat 21.
  • Build: A head taller than children his age at six. Nine Yin training had already given him a more defined jawline 21.
  • Clothing: Initially wears faded coarse cloth; later appears in Nuoding Academy’s coarse-cloth uniform 11 21.
  • Bearing: Consistently composed and self-possessed, even when facing older or stronger Soul Masters 11 42 64.

Personality

Yan Zu is cautious about displaying exceptional power. Aware that Tang Hao watches Tang San, he deliberately turns their spars into narrow victories rather than revealing his true superiority. He prioritizes survival and preparation over public recognition 32 41.

His central ambition is to redirect extraordinary power toward production, construction, research, and ordinary people’s welfare. He regards culture as a way to introduce new ideas and sees human–Soul Beast coexistence as part of that project 14 33 67.

He is affectionate toward his family and protective of his companions, but his restraint is not passivity. He intervenes against coercion and bullying, while treating Tang San’s poisoned attack as a serious boundary violation. Against opponents such as Meng Yiran, he prefers controlled, instructional exchanges over unnecessary injury 36 51 64 68.

His opposition to Tang San is also strategic. He seeks to interrupt opportunities that could strengthen a future enemy, yet hesitates to kill benevolent Soul Beasts for that purpose. He describes their conflict as a clash of paths rather than merely a personal grudge 14 67 120.

  • Used to pierce the Star Unicorn’s vital point and kill the Man Faced Demon Spider 38 67.
  • Releases offensive sword Qi 67.
  • Can be unsealed through Vow Power arising from living beings’ recognition of his civilizational contributions; that power also nourishes him 67.

  • The fusion enables Auspicious Domain and Jade Rabbit Treads on Clouds 33.
  • Its initial use leaves Xiao Wu nearly depleted of Soul Power 33.
  • A separate resonance, Glazed Tile Compatibility, strengthens Ning Rongrong’s amplification on him 51.

  • Identifies a vulnerable Soul Power node in the Jade Spirit Turtle’s shell 29.

  • Uses tailored treatments to address Dugu family poisoning and support Martial Soul development 95 109.
