Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Martial Soul awakening — Innate Full Soul Power 20 Retrospectively confirmed by Tang Hao. Possesses Twin Martial Souls: Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer. His Blue Silver Grass is identified as an incompletely awakened Quasi-Blue Silver Emperor.
Rank 12 Soul Master 25 Possesses a yellow first Soul Ring over four hundred years old, selected by Yu Xiaogang. Chen Mo identifies its source as a snake-type rather than a plant-type Soul Beast 21.
Rank 24 Soul Grandmaster 60 Reaches this level shortly after turning eleven, following nearly five years at Shrek. Cultivates diligently to avenge his separation from Tang Hao.
Level 36 Control-type Battle Soul Master 64 Thirteen years old; possesses two yellow Soul Rings and one purple Soul Ring.
Level 40 Soul Ancestor 87 Has four Soul Rings. His mechanical arm and Tang Sect Hidden Weapons raise his practical fighting strength to approximately that of an ordinary Soul King, with limited ability to contend against a Soul Emperor.

Background

Tang San was an orphan taken in by the Tang Sect in another world. He retained knowledge of its cultivation methods, combat techniques, and Hidden Weapons after arriving on the Douluo Continent. Chen Mo exposed this previous identity during their first confrontation 15.

Tang Hao raised him for six years, during which Tang San displayed unusual maturity and practiced techniques unfamiliar to the continent. Although Tang Hao initially regarded those practices as harmless, they later became grounds for suspicion about his son's identity 21 26.

At Nuoding, Tang San studied under Grandmaster Yu Xiaogang and befriended Xiao Wu. By the time Chen Mo intervened, Tang San and Xiao Wu had known each other for only three months and had not yet fully confided in one another 14 17.

Personality

Tang San's childhood orphanhood leaves him deeply attached to family affection. Despite receiving relatively little care from Tang Hao, he treasures having a father. Tang Hao's rejection devastates him, and Yu Xiaogang subsequently has to dissuade him from suicide several times 26 60.

His Tang Sect training emphasizes killing an opponent efficiently rather than observing the conventions of an honorable duel. He considers surprise attacks legitimate against enemies and regards his failed attempt on Lin Yaodong as a failure of execution, not a moral mistake. Flender recognizes his exceptional talent but considers him excessively proud and impulsive 69.

Humiliation frequently intensifies his desire for revenge. After losing to Dugu Yan, he vows to destroy her entire family; even when his teacher and companions disapprove of his conduct, he insists that he has done nothing wrong. Yu Xiaogang restores his composure by urging him to survive, cultivate, and postpone revenge until he is stronger 68 69 70.

Abilities & Skills

Twin Martial Souls

Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer 20 25.

  • Blue Silver Grass: His documented combat specialization is control-type, with Blue Silver Entanglement as his first Soul Skill 64 68.
  • Quasi-Blue Silver Emperor: Chen Mo identifies his Blue Silver Grass as an incomplete form that could become the Blue Silver Emperor and awaken a domain 20.
  • Clear Sky Hammer: Tang Hao initially attributes Tang San's Innate Full Soul Power to this Martial Soul. Chen Mo disputes that explanation, arguing that an ordinary top-tier Clear Sky Hammer cannot account for it 20.
  • Unrealized awakening: Tang San never completes the Blue Silver Emperor awakening in the documented storyline 87 94.

Soul Rings

Ring Documented source Age / Color Known skill or significance
First Identified by Chen Mo as snake-type Over 400 years; yellow Blue Silver Entanglement. Its non-plant origin complicates the proposed natural awakening of the Blue Silver Emperor 21 25 68.
Second Plant-type Soul Beast Yellow; exact age unspecified Obtained after Tang Hao's warning to use plant-type sources 64 87.
Third Plant-type Soul Beast Approximately 1,500 years; purple Does not exceed Yu Xiaogang's recorded age limits 64 87.
Fourth Plant-type Soul Beast Approximately 5,000 years Also remains within Yu Xiaogang's recorded limits 87.

Chen Mo proposes that suitable plant-type rings could allow a natural Blue Silver Emperor awakening, potentially with five rings or by Soul Saint at the latest. Because Tang San's first ring is unsuitable, success would depend on later choices. The alternative requires Ah Yin to expend substantial origin power; she also explains that a later awakening would realize less of the Martial Soul's potential 21.

Tang Sect Martial Techniques

Tang San combines refined movement, combat awareness, and internal-force attacks 16.

  • Can transmit internal force into an opponent's body to inflict internal injuries even when external defenses are difficult to penetrate 16.
  • Initially uses ingenious movement to exchange blows with the physically superior Lin Yaodong 16.
  • Is countered by Lin Yaodong's internal resilience, recovery, strength, and speed 16.
  • Remains Lin Yaodong's benchmark for combat technique long after their battles. Lin considers him the most skilled opponent he has encountered at an equivalent power level 151.

Hidden Weapons and Poison Arts

Tang San retains the Tang Sect's knowledge of concealed weapons and poisons, though he does not possess the full cultivation and poison mastery of his previous life 15 68.

  • Produces the Godly Zhuge Crossbow earlier than in the original storyline 60.
  • Negotiates a Hidden Weapon cooperation agreement with the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect 77 81.
  • Uses Hidden Weapons to assist Tang Hao at a critical moment during Lin Yaodong's attack, preventing a potentially fatal slash 91.
  • Cannot reliably overcome Lin Yaodong once the latter anticipates his weapons and accounts for their limitations 77.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Sleeve Arrow — Concealed weapon repeatedly aimed at Chen Mo during their initial confrontation. Tang San ultimately refrains from firing after sensing that Chen Mo will kill him if he attacks 15 16.
  • Godly Zhuge Crossbow — His strongest available Hidden Weapon at age eleven. He later attempts to use it against Dugu Yan, but Flender intervenes before he can fire 60 68.
  • Mechanical arm — A Tang Sect Hidden Weapon-based replacement fitted after Sword Douluo severs one of his arms. It increases rather than diminishes his overall combat strength 82 87.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Confrontation at Nuoding

Tang San arrives after Wang Sheng's group seeks him out to rescue Xiao Wu from Lin Yaodong and Chen Mo. Before his arrival, Chen Mo reveals that Tang Hao is a concealed Titled Douluo, leading Xiao Wu to suspect that her friendship with Tang San is a scheme to obtain her Soul Ring. Her suspicions are her interpretation, not evidence of an actual plan by Tang San 14.

Chen Mo then openly names Tang San's previous identity as a Tang Sect orphan. Alarmed, Tang San aims his Sleeve Arrow at him, lowers it to request an explanation, and remains prepared to attack. He is subsequently beaten by Lin Yaodong, whose physique counters his internal-force techniques 15 16.

After Chen Mo threatens both him and Tang Hao, Tang San allows the group to leave with Xiao Wu. Yu Xiaogang confirms Tang Hao's identity as Clear Sky Douluo and arranges their departure because Tang San's exposed background may attract danger 16 17.

Rejection by Tang Hao

Chen Mo raises the possibility that Tang San possessed Tang Hao and Ah Yin's child rather than being naturally reincarnated as their son. He proposes questioning Tang San about his earliest memories as a way to distinguish the two possibilities 21 22.

When Tang Hao asks, Tang San remembers light, rain, and possible thunder and lightning. Tang Hao associates this with the storm on the day Ah Yin sacrificed herself. He and Ah Yin conclude that their original child died and that Tang San's otherworldly soul took over the body 25 26.

At Ah Yin's insistence, Tang Hao attempts to kill him, but stops his hammer a fist's distance from Tang San's head. His attachment to the child he raised prevents him from completing the blow. He instead disowns Tang San and leaves, warning that another meeting will mean death. Tang San is badly injured by the shockwave of Tang Hao's departing strike and emotionally shattered by the rejection 26.

Shrek and the Revenge Campaign

Yu Xiaogang takes Tang San to Shrek, where he eventually joins Oscar, Ma Hongjun, and Dai Mubai as one of the Shrek Four Monsters. After surviving repeated suicidal crises, Tang San concludes that Chen Mo and Lin Yaodong caused his father's rejection and dedicates himself to revenge 60.

When Lin Yaodong challenges Shrek's deans, Tang San interferes with a Hidden Weapon attack. The attempt nearly kills Lin Yaodong and turns the encounter lethal. Lin later recounts that Zhao Wuji died protecting Tang San, Flender lost a leg, and Tang San escaped 69 73 87.

Defeat by Dugu Yan

Tang San, Dai Mubai, Ma Hongjun, and Oscar face Dugu Yan together. Although they counter her initial serpent poison, her fourth Soul Skill, Myriad Poison Bloodthirst, penetrates their skin and overwhelms them 68.

Tang San draws the Godly Zhuge Crossbow despite Flender's prohibition against using Hidden Weapons in a formal duel except to save his life. Flender slaps him, knocks away the weapon, and concedes. The subsequent disclosure of Tang San's earlier interference against Lin Yaodong damages his standing even among his companions 68 69.

Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect Agreement

Tang San reaches a cooperation agreement involving his Hidden Weapons, payment, and Ning Rongrong's participation in Shrek's tournament team. Ning Fengzhi secretly reveals both the agreement and Tang San's plans against Lin Yaodong to Lin himself 77 81.

The relationship later turns openly hostile. Sword Douluo Chen Xin attacks Tang San and Yu Xiaogang, severing one of Tang San's arms. Xiao Wu prevents the attack from becoming fatal because Chen Mo has ordered that Tang San not be killed before Tang Hao is located, unless Tang San forces the issue. Yu Xiaogang escapes with his unconscious disciple 82.

Soul Master Tournament

Tang San enters the tournament as Thousand-Hand Asura, a level forty Soul Ancestor equipped with his mechanical arm. Shrek faces Moon Shadow Wind Spirit Academy, but Lin Yaodong joins the opposing lineup and prevents Tang San from participating in the fighting. Shrek ultimately qualifies in sixth place, benefiting from an additional Heaven Dou qualification slot 87 88 89.

In Spirit City, Tang San narrowly secures victory over Spirit Hall's team through poison, leaving Shrek second overall. Bibi Dong then publicly identifies him as Tang Hao's son and orders his seizure as repayment for the previous Pope's death 90.

Final Rescue and Death

Despite their estrangement, Tang Hao intervenes to rescue Tang San. Their escape is blocked by Lin Yaodong, and Tang San's Hidden Weapons help Tang Hao survive the opening exchange 91.

After Chen Mo arrives, Tang San is restrained and transported outside Spirit City alongside Tang Hao and Lin Yaodong. Their fate is tied to the duel: victory would allow father and son to live, while defeat would condemn both 93 94.

Tang Hao loses and is killed by Lin Yaodong's Sword-Drawing Slash. Tang San grieves, threatens revenge, and confronts Chen Mo over the destruction of his family bond. Chen Mo answers that Tang San identified more strongly with his former Tang Sect self than with his role as Tang Hao's son. Tang San dies after this final exchange; the passage does not specify a separate killing technique used against him 94.

Relationships

  • Tang Hao — Father who raised him, later disowned him, and ultimately returned to attempt his rescue. Tang San remains deeply attached to him despite their separation 26 90 91 94.
  • Ah Yin — Mother of his body. Initially willing to sacrifice her origin power for his awakening, she demands his death after concluding that he displaced her original child 21 26.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Teacher and principal source of support after Tang Hao's rejection. Repeatedly saves him from suicidal despair and encourages him to cultivate for revenge 17 60 70.
  • Xiao Wu — Early friend at Nuoding. Their bond collapses after she becomes suspicious of Tang Hao's intentions; her later intervention to preserve Tang San's life follows Chen Mo's orders 14 82.
  • Chen Mo — Enemy who exposes his previous life and engineers the circumstances behind his estrangement from Tang Hao 15 21 22 74.
  • Lin Yaodong — Principal revenge target and a counter to his fighting style. Tang San's attempted assassination leads to a lethal feud involving Shrek and Tang Hao 16 60 73 94.
  • Dai Mubai, Ma Hongjun, and Oscar — Fellow members of the Shrek Four Monsters. His conduct against Lin Yaodong later strains his standing within the group 60 69.
  • Flender — Shrek's dean, who protects him during Lin Yaodong's retaliation but later intervenes against his use of Hidden Weapons in the duel with Dugu Yan 68 73.
  • Ning Fengzhi — Hidden Weapon business partner who secretly discloses Tang San's plans to Lin Yaodong 77.
  • Dugu Yan — Opponent whose victory provokes Tang San into swearing revenge against the entire Dugu family 68.

Notable Quotes

Legacy

  • Yu Xiaogang's reputation: Tang San's death removes the exceptional disciple through whom Yu Xiaogang hoped to validate his theories, contributing to the collapse of his standing 133.
  • Lin Yaodong's assessment: Long after Tang San's death, Lin still regards his pure combat skill and awareness as exceptional, comparing later opponents against him 151.
  • Divergence from the original storyline: This Tang San never awakens the Blue Silver Emperor or reaches the original story's God King outcome; his development ends at level forty 87 94.
