Background / History

Life on Blue Star

Qingming was abandoned at an orphanage as a newborn. Intelligent and unusually mature, he was never adopted. With encouragement from the director, work-study efforts, and charitable support, he completed university and obtained a position at a major laboratory. He had signed his employment contract only half a month before transmigrating, just as his years of financial hardship appeared to be ending 172.

At twenty-three, his soul entered the body of a recently deceased seven-year-old. The loss of his hard-earned future devastated him, but he eventually accepted that he had to begin again 172.

The Original Qingming

The original child was an abandoned infant raised by Qingyun in Pea Village. At six, his fire Martial Soul—unlike the villagers’ pea Martial Souls—led him to discover that Qingyun was not his biological grandfather. His distressed reaction and hurtful words damaged their relationship; Qingyun, already in poor health, died six months later 172.

Another six months afterward, the child suffered serious injuries in a Soul Fighting match with a classmate. Rather than resting as instructed, he forced himself to cultivate, worsening his condition. He died from his injuries and cultivation backlash while burdened by grief and regret, allowing the transmigrator to inherit his body and memories 172.

Research Under Poverty

Qingming recognized Douluo Continent from a novel he had read at university. His ordinary Martial Soul and level-2 Innate Soul Power nevertheless left him expecting little more than a lifetime ceiling around Soul Elder through conventional cultivation 172.

His junior academy offered mostly basic instruction, so he studied independently across academy libraries and noble-owned bookstores. Reading fees consumed nearly half his monthly income. He survived largely on Spirit Hall’s stipend of one Gold Soul Coin per month, while shortages of money repeatedly halted his experiments 154 172.

Rather than accept his apparent limits, he pursued the underlying nature of Soul Masters, Martial Souls, Soul Power, Soul Beasts, and Soul Rings. He regarded scientific thinking—not inherited aptitude—as his best chance of reaching godhood 154.

Personality

Qingming is studious, persistent, and ambitious. Before developing an effective cultivation aid, he maintained years of daily meditation despite slow progress. He also continued small experiments when meaningful results seemed distant, believing that preserving his scientific habits mattered in itself 154 172.

His skepticism toward Douluo society centers on its monopolization of knowledge and preference for combat over research. He believes Soul Masters waste abilities that could instead transform production, technology, and the understanding of supernatural power 154 155.

He is pragmatic rather than eager to prove himself through fighting. At Hilrey, he avoids challenges, reports persistent troublemakers to teachers, and sees unrewarded duels as time taken away from study. He displays his theoretical talent when doing so can secure resources, but otherwise prefers to benefit without attracting attention 159 160.

His confidence is hard-won. Before Life Solution No. 7 succeeded, he privately doubted whether scientific research could overcome his aptitude. Its success replaced much of that anxiety with the conviction that even godhood could become a research problem 155.

Abilities & Skills

Fire Martial Soul and Flame Bullet

Qingming possesses an ordinary fire Martial Soul and a yellow First Soul Ring. His First Soul Skill, Flame Bullet, produces attacks with impact and explosive damage 176.

  • Can release up to five Flame Bullets simultaneously 176.
  • At the admission assessment, his Soul Power supported seven individually fired bullets 176.
  • Combines effectively with Wend’s Wind Blade because wind strengthens fire 176.
  • Conflicts with Su Xiaoxi’s water attacks; simultaneous use weakens their damage, requiring staggered timing 176.

He obtained his yellow First Soul Ring through a combination of demonstrated value, luck, and a bribe to the teacher leading the hunt 175.

Soul Beast Research

Qingming uses dissection, Soul Power measurements, repeated observations, and recorded physical data to investigate supernatural life 154 174.

  • Found that a Soft Bone Rabbit normally releases the most Soul Power around its heart, followed by its limbs and teeth 154.
  • Observed Soul Power gathering around injuries until wounds healed 154.
  • Determined that draining a rabbit’s blood removed little of its Soul Power 154.
  • Recognized that his limited strength and sensitivity prevented more precise Soul Power mapping 154.
  • Later bred and studied white mice and weak plant-type Soul Beasts while seeking new potions 204.

Life Solution No. 7

Qingming’s principal invention is Life Solution No. 7, also called No. 7 Life Liquid or No. 7 Life Potion. Its vitality strengthens the body and accelerates Soul Power cultivation 155 204.

  • Animal testing: Experimental rabbit No. 13 survived severe injuries and recovered after treatment, with no major problems found during follow-up dissection 154 174.
  • Self-testing: An initial diluted dose produced roughly two hours’ normal cultivation gains in about five minutes 174.
  • Personal formulation: Qingming identified a dilution ratio of 1:2.3 as most effective for himself 174.
  • Cultivation benefit: Initially allowed him to cultivate more than ten times faster than before while noticeably improving his physical vitality 155.
  • Mental cost: Absorbing its life force exhausted his mental strength, reducing how long he could cultivate in a day 155.
  • Declining effectiveness: Repeated use produced resistance. He estimated that its benefits would become negligible after reaching Soul Elder 204.

Its effects led him to infer that life force plays a dominant role in producing Soul Power; this remains his research conclusion rather than a fully established explanation 155.

Tactical Planning

Qingming designs plans around attack timing, elemental interactions, and misleading an opponent about remaining reserves 176.

  • Established a predictable ranged attack sequence before suddenly changing its order and intensity 176.
  • Used Su Xiaoxi’s stun to create an opening for a combined Wind Blade–Flame Bullet strike 176.
  • Had teammates feign Soul Power exhaustion before returning for a final coordinated attack 159 176.
  • Explicitly acknowledged that the plan depended on the stronger examiner holding back; an immediate attack on their rear line could invalidate it 176.

Memory and Recordkeeping

Qingming’s memory improved after transmigration, though he cannot memorize everything at a glance. He writes down research ideas and remembered novel details in Chinese to preserve information from his previous life 174.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Hilrey Admission

Qingming chose Hilrey partly because its theoretical resources rivaled those of ordinary advanced academies. During admission, he completed the basic written questions quickly, expanded his answers, and earned an exceptional score 155 160.

Assessment / Result Outcome
Soul Power test 200 points for reaching level 15 at age twelve 159
Theory examination 150 points, the maximum exceptional score; only the second such result in Hilrey’s history 159
Practical combat test 150 points for his five-person group; Zhao Gang praised Qingming’s planning 175
Total 500 points 175
Final placement Seventh among 124 admitted students 159
Admission rewards Fee exemption, 36 Gold Soul Coins, a deluxe monthly card, and a private room 159

His theoretical achievement attracted research teachers’ attention and earned monthly access to the library’s third floor. Each visit lasted at most two hours, with no borrowing, copying, or written notes permitted 160.

Potion Sales and Academy Life

To fund his work without exposing his formula, Qingming sold a weakened version of Life Solution No. 7 through Carter Auction House. He diluted twenty milliliters into one hundred milliliters and added buffers and other ingredients to obstruct analysis. He later recognized it among Su Xiaoxi’s admission rewards and discovered that the auction house had resold it for four times the five hundred Gold Soul Coins it had paid him 160 177.

His seventh-place admission despite relatively low Soul Power provoked resentment from stronger students. His refusal to accept challenges further damaged his reputation in the combat-focused academy, though it preserved time for study 160.

Su Xiaoxi’s Flower Guardian

Su Xiaoxi offered expanded library access and rare materials if Qingming would act as her “flower guardian,” serving as a shield against her suitors. He initially refused because even their ordinary friendship already attracted harassment, but eventually accepted 178.

Her family separately warned him against pursuing her romantically and paid him more than ten times what she herself had offered to perform the same role. Su Xiaoxi did not know about that larger arrangement 178.

Replacement Potion Research

By level twenty, Qingming needed an alternative to No. 7 before its declining effectiveness stalled his cultivation. Su Xiaoxi’s connections helped secure laboratory rooms on Hilrey’s expensive city-center grounds, where he continued experimenting with weak plant-type Soul Beasts and other subjects 204.

Relationships

  • Qingyun — Adoptive grandfather of the original body’s owner. Their painful estrangement and Qingyun’s death shaped the memories Qingming inherited 172.
  • Su Xiaoxi — Friend, benefactor, and the student whose flower guardian he agrees to become. She explicitly finds him good-looking, helps him obtain books and materials, and uses her connections to support his laboratory 178 204.
  • Su Xiaoxi’s family — Financial backers of his flower-guardian arrangement; they also prohibit him from developing romantic ambitions toward her 178.
  • Zhao Gang — Admissions examiner and third-year instructor who admires Qingming’s tactical performance and offers assistance if he encounters trouble 159.
  • Wend — Admission-test teammate whose Wind Blade combines with Qingming’s Flame Bullet 176.
  • Wolf Wright and Zhao Xiaolong — Front-line teammates during the admission assessment. Wright resents taking the worst beating while Qingming and the other ranged attackers execute the plan 175 176.
  • Gu Tong — Third-floor librarian who enforces Qingming’s access limits, but permits a three-day loan of two books through Su Xiaoxi 177 178.
  • Principal Yinte — Recognizes Qingming’s theoretical talent and cites him among the academy’s unusually promising incoming students 160.

Notable Quotes

“Perhaps I'll be the first person on Douluo Continent to reach the Titled Douluo realm with level two Innate Soul Power.” 181

Trivia

  • Qingming’s storyline takes place while Qian Xunji is still Spirit Hall’s Pope and before Tang San has been born, frustrating his original idea of joining Shrek and following the novel’s protagonist 174.
  • His previous-life naming account contains an inconsistency: it says he was called Qingming in both lives, but also describes the orphanage director naming him Qingfeng after the inscription on his jade pendant 172.
