Appearance
- A handsome young man with black hair, dark eyes, long legs, and slender fingers 5 6 7.
- Wears a black leather jacket, described with a large white collar, and a black coat 3 4.
- His eyes glow violet while using the book-based ability that allows Qi Zhou to understand him 5.
- Appears in a suit at the Whale Hotel before the manor operation 15.
Personality
Chrollo maintains a calm, often faintly amused manner while stealing abilities, threatening others, or inflicting injury. He treats Qi Zhou’s consent as irrelevant once the boy’s ability proves useful, explicitly placing the Phantom Troupe and its leader’s orders above individual wishes 3 5 6.
His interest in people is analytical and experimental. Qi Zhou’s unexplained power, changing eye color, and apparent second personality fascinate him more than the boy’s support ability alone. He repeatedly uses danger and Nen pressure to try to draw out the silver-blue-eyed personality, whom he considers an existence on equal footing with himself 4 5 7.
Qi Zhou’s willingness to die rather than kill challenges Chrollo’s expectations. Unable to understand why strangers’ lives should outweigh the boy’s own survival, he replaces an execution with an experiment: observing whether Meteor City will destroy that moral resolve 22.
Abilities & Skills
Skill Hunter
Skill Hunter takes other people’s Nen abilities and makes them available to Chrollo through a summoned book. He describes its targets as possessing abilities weaker than his own 3.
Stated acquisition conditions:
- The target must answer questions concerning their Nen ability.
- The target must demonstrate the ability.
- The target must press their hand onto the book’s handprint.
- All three conditions must be completed within one hour 3.
Effects and limitations:
- The original owner cannot use the stolen ability while Chrollo possesses it 3.
- Stolen abilities cannot continue to be trained. Chrollo therefore returns Qi Zhou’s ability so its effects can improve through practice 5.
- He returns an ability by tearing out the page bearing its owner’s portrait 5.
- He considers killing Qi Zhou a potential loss because it might leave the stolen ability unusable 4.
Song of the Four Seasons
Chrollo uses Qi Zhou’s stolen musical ability to produce badges that improve the wearer’s speed, strength, stamina, and manifest aura output 3 6.
- Personally tests a badge by pinning it beneath his collar. The improvement is small for his highly trained body, but he recognizes its potential to decide a close battle 3.
- Supplies badges to Troupe members and evaluates their usefulness for travel and operations 5 6 9.
- Confirms that Qi Zhou’s training makes the badges more effective, supporting his decision to cultivate the original user rather than permanently retain the initial version 8.
Language-Comprehension Ability
An unnamed ability accessed through his book allows Qi Zhou to understand Chrollo despite their language barrier 2 5.
- Its use is accompanied by violet light in Chrollo’s eyes 5.
- Chrollo finds maintaining Nen-assisted communication tiring and begins teaching Qi Zhou the Common Language instead 6.
Nen Control and Pressure
Chrollo possesses tightly controlled aura and can direct overwhelming Nen pressure at others 5 11.
- Blocks Feitan’s killing intent and Nen pressure before they reach Qi Zhou 5.
- Uses pressure severe enough to leave Qi Zhou bleeding from his nose and ears 5.
- Recognizes that Qi Zhou’s continued Zetsu under pressure suggests either exceptional suppression or an imposed restriction 5.
- Teaches Ten, aura concentration in the legs, and defensive responses to hostile Nen 5 6 9.
- Qi Zhou later describes his pressure as cold and silent, like an abyss beneath an icy sea 47.
Leadership and Planning
Chrollo directs Troupe operations and assigns members according to their roles 8.
- Assigns intelligence gathering to Machi and Pakunoda, transportation to Shalnark, and base duty to Bonolenov and Franklin before the Whale Manor operation 8.
- Allows voluntary participation in ordinary activities and grouping when no special requirements apply 5 8.
- Makes Qi Zhou’s infiltration assignment an entrance assessment, then adds killing the surviving witnesses as the final test 10 21.
History
Rescuing and Investigating Qi Zhou
Chrollo rescues the gravely injured Qi Zhou from a box and brings him back to recover. With Pakunoda examining the boy’s memories, he questions Qi Zhou about his identity and musical ability. He then demands that ability as payment for the rescue and takes it with Skill Hunter 2 3.
His investigation produces more questions than answers. Shalnark finds a resemblance to the deceased Noah Barton, while Machi finds no Nen marks or implanted monitoring devices. Chrollo is particularly interested in the boy’s silver-blue eyes and the powerful elemental attack associated with them 4.
Forced Candidacy and Training
Chrollo lists Qi Zhou as a Phantom Troupe candidate despite his reluctance and several members’ concerns about his weakness. He returns the stolen ability so it can develop, but threatens to steal it again, break the boy’s limbs, and lock him in a box if he runs away 5.
His lessons combine instruction with potentially lethal coercion. He forces Qi Zhou to stand under threat of death, shatters his shoulders when he challenges the Troupe’s authority, and has Machi repair the damage. Alongside Nen training, he teaches the Common Language and requires constant aura maintenance 6 7.
After two months, Chrollo judges Qi Zhou’s progress barely adequate and designates the Whale Manor operation as his entrance test 8.
Whale Manor
Chrollo travels with Qi Zhou and Shalnark to Bingsige Town. Qi Zhou receives three days to discover Whale Manor’s secret entrance and investigate its layout and guards. Before the infiltration, Chrollo has Shalnark relay instructions not to use Gyo or take unnecessary action 10 15.
After the Troupe loots the exhibition hall, Chrollo orders Qi Zhou to kill the surviving witnesses. When the boy refuses, he directs Shalnark to force the killings through Nen control. Chrollo then formally identifies himself as the Troupe’s leader, but Qi Zhou attacks him with an explosive Nen ability and attempts to escape 21.
The Meteor City Wager
Following the escape attempt, Qi Zhou spends nearly ten days confined in a box with broken limbs. Chrollo offers him a choice between joining as number eight and dying. When Qi Zhou chooses death, Chrollo cuts his neck but stops after realizing the boy genuinely will not resist 22.
Intrigued by this refusal to compromise, Chrollo has Machi repair his limbs and takes his ability again. He promises freedom if Qi Zhou survives six months in Meteor City, while allowing him to return if he changes his mind. Privately, Chrollo regards the arrangement as an experiment rather than a release from his control 22.
The threat continues to influence Qi Zhou after his departure. Remembering Skill Hunter’s thickness and the unknown abilities it might contain discourages him from abandoning the wager 34.
Relationships
- Qi Zhou — Rescued boy, coerced candidate, student, and experimental subject. Chrollo values his support ability but becomes increasingly interested in his hidden power and resistance to moral compromise 2 5 7 22.
- Noah / “Silver-Blue” — The silver-blue-eyed personality sharing Qi Zhou’s body. Chrollo initially suspects a second personality and would prefer to recruit this fierce, resolute counterpart 4 7 34.
- Pakunoda — Troupe member whose memory reading supports his interrogation of Qi Zhou. She later advises against recruiting the boy and proposes removing his memories instead 2 3 21.
- Shalnark — Handles database searches, travel arrangements, and Qi Zhou’s forced actions under Chrollo’s orders 4 8 21.
- Machi — Examines and repeatedly repairs Qi Zhou. Chrollo charges the eighteen-million repair bill for the boy’s shoulders to his tab 4 7 22.
Notable Quotes
“First, the Phantom Troupe comes first. Betrayal is absolutely forbidden.” 6
“Second, the leader’s orders come first. So you just need to do as I say.” 6
“It’s just an experiment. … No prey has ever escaped a spider’s web alive.” 22
Trivia
- His first attempt at teaching leaves him baffled when Qi Zhou cannot pronounce “Lucilfer” after an hour of correction. Two months later, the boy still calls him “Chrollo Lucici” 7 8.
- While teaching Nen, he consults an orthodox training textbook for the first time. His own preferred methods are faster, but he recognizes that they could kill Qi Zhou 5.
