You can use the whole site from the keyboard, and a few settings make it easier to read and use. Press ? on any page to see every shortcut.

Keyboard shortcuts#

Everywhere#

Key Action
/ Jump to the search box. On a phone with a keyboard, it opens the search.
? Show the list of keyboard shortcuts
Esc Close a dialog, menu or search
Ctrl + B (⌘ + B on a Mac) Show or hide the sidebar

Lists#

These work on Browse, Popular, Wikis, the glossaries, Activity, your Library, profiles, a novel's chapter list, chapter summaries and Notifications.

Key Action
← Previous page
→ Next page
↓ Next item. From the page heading, the first item.
↑ Previous item
Home First item on the page
End Last item on the page
Enter or Space Open the item

After you turn a page with ← or →, the page heading is selected, so pressing ↓ takes you to the first item. The up and down arrows only move between items once you're on one. Anywhere else, they scroll the page as usual.

Chapter reader#

Key Action
← Previous chapter
→ Next chapter
E Show or hide glossary highlights
R Offer to retranslate the chapter (click Retranslate in the prompt to confirm)
T Start or stop read aloud

The offline reader has the same keys, except R.

Help pages#

Ctrl + K (⌘ + K on a Mac) or / searches the help pages.

When shortcuts pause#

Shortcuts do nothing while you're typing in a text field, while Ctrl, Cmd or Alt is held (so the browser's own shortcuts keep working), and while a dialog or menu is open. When a slider, a set of tabs or anything that scrolls sideways is selected, the arrow keys move that instead.

Accessibility settings#

These are in Display Settings → Site. Open Display Settings from the settings button in the site header, or from the reader. See Display Settings.

Setting What it does
Text Size Default, Large or Larger, for the whole site. Chapters grow too, with your chapter font size applied on top.
Underline Links Underlines links in text, such as reviews and comments, so they aren't marked by colour alone
Reduce Motion Turns off animations and smooth scrolling. If your device is already set to reduce motion, the site follows it and the switch shows as on.

These settings are saved in your browser, so set them once on each device. They apply before the page appears, so nothing jumps when a page loads.

Screen readers and keyboard navigation#

  • Skip to main content: press Tab once on any page to show a link that jumps past the header and sidebar.
  • A clear outline shows which item is selected when you move around with the keyboard.
  • When you turn a page in a list, screen readers announce the new page ("Page 3 of 70").
  • Icon buttons, such as edit, delete, report and clear search, are read out by name.
