Background / History

First contact with Jin

Orochimaru first appears after killing a small white snake that Jin had released. His overwhelming killing intent forces Jin onto the defensive, and he questions how an Uchiha reputedly incapable of ninjutsu can use Shadow Clones and Fire Release. At this point, he remains devoted to Konoha and views Jin’s unexplained knowledge with suspicion 10 11.

Jin offers him Basic Inner Cultivation in exchange for becoming his disciple. Orochimaru initially refuses because Nawaki’s death still weighs on him, but promises to preserve Jin’s secret and find him a teacher. Studying the technique redirects his attention from assigned Hashirama Cells experiments toward a more promising route to immortality 11 13.

He later brings Jin to his concealed laboratory in the Forest of Death, offering protection while seeking further development of Basic Inner Cultivation. Their arrangement becomes a formal teacher–student relationship when Orochimaru tells Jin to call him “Teacher Orochimaru.” After four months of training, Jin gives him the Undying Seal Technique as thanks 18 30.

Land of Rain war

Orochimaru leads a force containing many children who graduated early from the Ninja Academy. Although troubled by their presence, he places Konoha’s needs first. He initially refuses to take Might Duy to war, then tests him in a battle that reveals Duy’s Sixth Gate strength and mastery of Jin’s taijutsu techniques 41 42.

During the advance, he fights Ebizo’s Black Pine Ten puppets using snake techniques, Manda, and a convincing full-strength clone. After Sunagakure withdraws, he prioritizes the wider war rather than pursuit. His arrival subsequently restores Konoha’s morale and enables a counterattack into the Land of Rain 44 47.

His repeated battles with Hanzō drive the development of Infinite Great Snake. After three years of fighting and heavy casualties, he suspects a trap when the other villages suddenly withdraw and requests reinforcements. That caution proves justified when Ōnoki intervenes; Orochimaru’s Eight Branches transformation is ultimately destroyed by the combined opposition. He later fights the Third Kazekage to a stalemate before Konoha’s counterattack forces the enemy Kage to retreat 86 87 132 135 136 145.

Research and the Hokage contest

Orochimaru collaborates with Jin and Hiruko on souls, bodies, sealing techniques, and Hiruko’s Chimera research. Hiruzen subsequently makes Orochimaru’s appointment as deputy director a condition for approving Jin’s Research and Development Department. Within that department, Orochimaru develops the Soul Splitting Technique, allowing revival while any soul fragment survives 179 203 251.

His loyalty to Konoha becomes increasingly negotiable. When Jin asks him to conceal laboratory evidence before a coming investigation, Orochimaru initially refuses to cooperate with anything harmful to the village. A report on Hashirama Cells and the Sharingan is enough to secure his agreement 286.

Against Bunpuku, he demonstrates the practical value of resurrection: he repeatedly returns to battle for nearly two weeks, replenishing his Chakra between revivals. A later confrontation showcases his Third Layer Snake God Dharma Body and a Natural Energy poison specifically prepared for Bunpuku 334 335 355.

Orochimaru competes for the Hokage position with Danzō, Root, and Might Duy among his supporters, but loses to Minato. Even while accompanying Danzō afterward, he secretly receives Root’s classified information. During Konoha’s civil strife, he attacks Danzō; he also appears beside Minato’s Dharma Body during the battle against the invading forces 377 380 390 393.

Service under Uchiha Jin

After leaving Konoha, Orochimaru becomes one of the Land of Rain’s Legion Commanders. He carries out Jin’s order to eliminate the noble class led by the daimyos in the Land of Wind, while taking the opportunity to examine Sasori’s puppet technology 403 420.

His research extends beyond living bodies. He opens a passage to the Pure Land, enabling Jin to retrieve the souls of powerful deceased shinobi. Together, they resurrect those shinobi using ordinary bodies infused with White Zetsu cells 468.

Under the Land of Shadow, he becomes the chief scientist and commander of the Ninth Legion. He later visits the recently released Jiraiya, offers a pill to restore his strength, and invites him to join Jin’s side. Jiraiya declines 607 614.

Other worlds and interstellar conflict

Orochimaru’s battle with Madara demonstrates his advanced absorption and reconstruction abilities, but ends when Madara subdues him with Infinite Tsukuyomi. Memories of alternate lives subsequently expand his research and complete a crucial part of his work toward the Six Paths realm 567 568 586.

In the Soul Reaper conflict, he captures Ichigo as experimental material and studies Yamamoto’s abilities through combat. Yamamoto repeatedly destroys his bodies without preventing his return. Orochimaru later defeats Yamamoto again, but encounters a different obstacle in Ichibē Hyōsube: an attack on his name reduces his power even after he reconstructs himself 625 640 656 659.

He accompanies Jin to a planet containing beings capable of threatening him, responding with increased curiosity rather than retreat. Later, he negotiates with the Fourth Raikage A to organize an alliance against the Ōtsutsuki Clan. The Land of Shadow agrees to remove restrictions on the allies’ development and supplies an interstellar warship equipped with a Planet Destruction Cannon 804 854.

Appearance

  • Original appearance: Long hair, deathly pale skin, snake-like pupils, and a white kimono at his first meeting with Jin 10 11.
  • Serpentine traits: A long, snake-like tongue; the ability to replace his legs with a snake tail or transform into a white snake 29 42 439.
  • Scientist attire: Later wears a white laboratory coat over a black uniform, with glasses 607.
  • Infinite Snake Body: Develops visible facial scales, an elongated lower body, and large bony wings. Its initial humanoid form remains approximately human-sized 567.

Personality

Orochimaru’s detached, intimidating manner earns him the nickname Cold Lord, even among Konoha’s own ninja. He performs lethal experiments without visible distress and can observe Jin’s dangerous battles without intervening. Nevertheless, his emotional coldness is not absolute: Nawaki’s death affects his willingness to accept another disciple, and he feels unease about sending children to war 11 13 29 41 42.

His defining interest is knowledge. He treats unfamiliar techniques as worthy of respect, pursues immortality because a human lifespan is insufficient for his study of ninjutsu, and eventually regards accumulated knowledge as his route to higher realms. Researchers such as Jin, Hiruko, and Sasori attract his attention more readily than political questions 11 13 179 420 586.

In combat, he favors deception, psychological pressure, and information gathering over straightforward contests of strength. He prolongs battles to test techniques or examine opponents, and exploits Bunpuku’s reluctance to cause indiscriminate slaughter. His patience becomes particularly dangerous when paired with resurrection, allowing him to turn otherwise unfavorable encounters into battles of endurance 86 335 355 371 640.

Abilities & Skills

Ninjutsu Research and Fūinjutsu

  • Recognizes Basic Inner Cultivation’s component seals as dismantled and recombined parts of a single seal after only a brief examination 11.
  • Investigates Hashirama Cells, soul–Chakra fusion, bodily modification, and immortality 13 179.
  • Develops new techniques from the Undying Seal Technique supplied by Jin 30 87.
  • Discovers the theoretical Six Paths Kingly Realm through research into soul and Natural Energy fusion 382.

Snake Techniques and Body Replacement

  • Hidden Shadow Many Snake Hands: Releases snakes to restrain and attack enemies; later incorporates Chakra-draining white snakes 42 134.
  • Myriad Snake Formation / Swarming Formation: Produces a large swarm whose members can extend blades from their mouths 42 334.
  • Great Snake Style Body Replacement: Emerges intact from the mouth of a damaged body, escaping dismemberment and poison damage 42 135.
  • Reconnects injuries through intertwined snakes and uses underground movement to evade or reposition 42 44.

Undying Seal Technique and Chakra Absorption

  • Transference Technique: Creates a barrier that absorbs incoming ninjutsu, including Hanzō’s Chakra-infused poisonous water 86.
  • Reuses an opponent’s ninjutsu and converts absorbed Chakra into continued fighting power 86 145.
  • White snakes absorb Chakra from restrained opponents and grow as they feed 134.
  • Limit: Bunpuku’s attacks made entirely from Natural Energy provide no Chakra for the snakes to absorb 334.

Infinite Great Snake

  • Creates an earth-nature serpent that absorbs surrounding Chakra to increase its size and repairs injuries with Chakra 87.
  • Can change its nature from earth to fire through an additional technique 87.
  • Its initial version begins shrinking after more than a minute without a Chakra supply; consumption rises with size, while absorption speed remains limited 87.
  • Is less effective against taijutsu specialists and can be destroyed by sufficiently powerful attacks, including Ōnoki’s Dust Release 87 135.
  • Later serves as the basis for Orochimaru’s own Infinite Snake Body 568.

Eight Branches Technique

  • Transforms into an enormous serpent with eight heads and eight tails, nearly one hundred meters tall in its first documented use 136.
  • Its heads absorb ninjutsu and unleash different elemental attacks, including flames, lightning, wind, sand, and water 136 145.
  • Regrows severed heads, but sustained iron sand attacks can still wound the Orochimaru concealed within 145.
  • After the development of soul splitting, shattered fragments can each become another Eight-Headed Serpent; Orochimaru identifies them as true bodies rather than disposable clones 334.

Soul Splitting and Resurrection

  • Soul Splitting Technique: Divides his soul into numerous fragments; survival of one fragment permits revival after death 251.
  • Hides flesh and blood away from the battlefield, resurrects, and uses Chakra-replenishing pills before returning to combat 335.
  • Eventually no longer needs to change bodies to survive. His Dharma Body has a lifespan of several thousand years 586.
  • Reconstruction does not protect him from every form of defeat: Madara’s Infinite Tsukuyomi subdues him, while Ichibē’s name-cutting ability continues to weaken him across replacement bodies 568 659.

Snake God Dharma Body

  • Unlike a conventional Dharma Body condensed from Natural Energy, it is composed of Orochimaru’s flesh and soul, giving him unusually direct control 355.
  • Breaks into small snakes to avoid attacks, then reforms after extensive destruction 355.
  • Uses flight, constriction, Natural Energy-infused flames, and venom designed to decompose Bunpuku’s Dharma Body 355.
  • Its central advantage is immortality rather than exceptional attack, defense, or speed; the same type of body used by Kabuto is assessed as weak in conventional statistics but extremely difficult to defeat through attrition 624 625.

Infinite Snake Bodies and Sage Arts

  • Biological Science—Infinite Snake Body: Applies Infinite Great Snake’s properties to Orochimaru himself, allowing him to swallow powerful attacks and grow 567 568.
  • At the time of his battle with Madara, destroying this body requires at least Six Paths-level energy 568.
  • Produces multiple Infinite Snake Bodies with human torsos, snake tails, and bony wings 603.
  • Uses Ice Release: Ice Calamity and Calamity, his most destructive sage art; multiple bodies can fire Calamity together 640.
  • Can reconstruct after Yamamoto vaporizes his body or reduces it to crumbling, blackened bones 640.

Battlefield Command and Deception

  • Uses a convincing clone capable of fighting at the original’s full strength to confuse Ebizo 44.
  • Resists Sunagakure’s Mirage Sound Genjutsu when most of his troops are trapped 44.
  • Multiplies projectiles through Shuriken Shadow Clone Jutsu; later turns embedded shuriken into venomous snakes 42 134.
  • Coordinates retreats from Hanzō’s poison mist and entrusts Might Duy with protecting the other ninja 86.

Pure Land Access

  • Opens a passage to the Pure Land and assists Jin in resurrecting retrieved souls 468.
  • Later requires access to Jin’s tightly controlled Pure Land system for experimental purposes; Impure World Reincarnation can no longer bypass that control 586.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Used in close combat against Hanzō; poison on its blade is neutralized by Hanzō’s own internal poison 86 135.
  • Shuriken and explosive tags — Used in combat and in Jin’s blindfolded training 30 42.
  • Undying Seal Technique scroll — A gift from Jin that becomes the foundation of Infinite Great Snake 30 87.
  • Chakra-replenishing pills — Research and Development Department supplies that restore his fighting strength between revivals 335.
  • Hidden laboratories — Includes a Forest of Death research base and a barrier-protected basement beneath the Research and Development Department 18 286.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Jin — Disciple, research partner, and later ruler. Orochimaru initially seeks to exploit Jin’s technique, but develops a personal attachment and suppresses information that could expose him to Konoha’s political retaliation 18 30 84 85 403.
  • Nawaki — Former disciple whose death deeply affects him. Jin’s arrival at that vulnerable time leads Orochimaru to see Jin, in a sense, as Nawaki 11 85 406.
  • Might Duy — Former classmate and trusted battlefield ally. Orochimaru is exasperated by his behavior but trusts him to protect his comrades 41 86 132 179.
  • Jiraiya — Teammate whose strength he respects. Their later relationship is cordial but distant; Orochimaru offers help after Jiraiya’s imprisonment 18 132 607.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher and village leader. Hiruzen attempts to place him within Jin’s department as deputy director, but Orochimaru ultimately leaves Konoha 30 203 403.
  • Shimura Danzō — Research collaborator and political supporter. Orochimaru later obtains Root secrets behind his back and attacks him during Konoha’s civil strife 13 179 377 380 390.
  • Hiruko — Old friend and fellow researcher; joins Orochimaru and Jin in collaborative discussions and concealed experiments 179 286.
  • Yakushi Kabuto — Subordinate who later uses a Dharma Body modeled on Orochimaru’s 586 624 625.
  • Manda — Giant serpent summon used against enemy armies and Hanzō’s salamander, Ibuse 44 86 135.
  • Hanzō — Repeated wartime opponent; later a fellow Legion Commander under Jin 86 135 403.
  • Sasori — Rival researcher whose puppetry fascinates him. Orochimaru recognizes him as a fellow research obsessive despite their hostility 393 420.
  • Bunpuku — Opponent whose strength Orochimaru counters through resurrection, tailored poison, and prolonged experimentation 335 355 371.
  • Madara Uchiha — Research subject of interest and dangerous opponent; defeats Orochimaru with Infinite Tsukuyomi 566 568.

Parallel-World Counterpart

The Orochimaru encountered during the later Chūnin Exam arc is explicitly not the Land of Shadow’s Six Paths powerhouse. Sasuke recognizes the resemblance but immediately judges this version far weaker 723.

  • Chūnin Exam encounter: Disguises himself to confront Naruto and Sasuke. Sasuke destroys his body and three Rashomon gates, but he escapes through substitution and underground movement 723.
  • Konoha Crush Plan: Appears in the Kazekage’s disguise, then kills the gravely injured Hiruzen with the Kusanagi Sword. He releases the Senju brothers’ Impure World Reincarnation and escapes while Jiraiya turns to defend Konoha from a Tailed Beast 729 732.
  • Dimensional technology: Collaborates with his world’s Sasori to rebuild the visitors’ damaged transportation device. Sasori supplies machinery expertise, while Orochimaru contributes knowledge of Chakra and Natural Energy 735.
  • Interest in the other world: The prospect of a world containing stronger versions of himself and Sasori provides a reason to cooperate despite their rivalry 735.
  • After arrival: Recognizes how weak the visiting faction is relative to its new surroundings and questions the alternate Obito’s claim to be Madara 751.
