Background / History

Odin exiled Thor to Earth after stripping him of his power and casting Mjolnir after him. The hammer could only be lifted by one worthy to possess Thor’s power; Thor initially failed to move it and realized he had not regained Odin’s forgiveness 317 323.

While mortal in New Mexico, Thor helped evacuate civilians during the Destroyer’s assault and offered himself to Loki in exchange for the townspeople’s safety. Odin judged this selflessness worthy, restored Thor’s powers, and allowed Mjolnir to return to him. Thor then destroyed the Destroyer and returned to Asgard to confront Loki 338 341 342.

When Loki used the Bifrost to destroy Jotunheim, Thor destroyed the bridge to stop the attack, causing Loki to fall into the Cosmic Abyss. The act separated Thor from Jane Foster and left the Nine Realms vulnerable to rebellion 343 344.
