Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Three-Ring Soul Elder — Jade Phosphor Serpent | 39 107 | Initially possesses two yellow Soul Rings and one purple Soul Ring. Her pre-herb Soul Power is later identified as level 36. |
| Temporary Soul Ancestor-level combat strength | 62 | Xia Liang transfers Ring Fusion energy into her, temporarily raising her combat strength above her realm. This is an external boost, not a permanent advancement. |
| Level 40 — Jade Phosphor Serpent Queen/Empress | 101 106 107 | Absorbs Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng and Evergreen Oil Hemp Vine. Her Martial Soul advances from high-grade to top-grade, awakens its dragon bloodline, and gains flight. The medicinal impact also opens her Eight Extraordinary Meridians. |
| Level 43 — Four-Ring Soul Ancestor | 107 | Absorbs a 7,000-year Poison Anaconda Soul Ring supplied by Xia Liang and safeguarded by Dugu Bo. The ring strengthens her poison and supports further dragon transformation. |
| Jade Phosphor Poison Dragon | 113 117 138 | The pressure of Tang San's lethal hidden weapons during their team battle triggers full dragon transformation. Her poison approaches the ultimate category, and her serpent poison backlash is eliminated. The evolution is confirmed retrospectively in Chapter 138. |
| Soul King | 138 | Confirmed as a Soul King after her Martial Soul's dragon evolution; her exact level and fifth Soul Ring are not specified. |
Background / History
Dugu Yan lost both parents and regards her purple hair and jade-green eyes as their surviving legacy: her hair resembles her mother's, while her eyes resemble her father's. Although these colors are associated with the poison affecting her body, she treasures them rather than resenting them 63.
Her grandfather, Dugu Bo, oversees her poison training and is strongly protective of her. He forbids her from practicing internal Mixed Poison because the Jade Phosphor Serpent's toxicity can injure its own user. His possessiveness initially makes her hide Xia Liang's overnight stay at Dugu Manor 46 63.
At Heaven Dou Royal Academy, she becomes the Imperial Fighting Team's vice-captain under Qin Ming. Dugu Bo's status also makes a relationship with her strategically valuable: Yu Tianheng's family sends him to the academy to befriend her and secure the Poison Douluo's support 37 39.
Appearance
- Normal appearance: Purple hair and jade-green eyes. Both colors deepen as her Martial Soul gains Soul Rings and the poison affecting her body grows stronger 63.
- Original Martial Soul possession: Her lower body becomes a thick emerald-green snake tail, her eyes narrow into serpent eyes, and her purple hair darkens 39 40.
- Serpent Empress possession: Her hair becomes dark-green snake shadows, her feet remain separate and float above the ground, and faint purple eyeshadow appears around her eyes. Purple toxic gas forms claws around her fingers, while shimmering dark-green scale armor covers her body 107.
- After dragon transformation: She retains large emerald eyes with long eyelashes and develops a notably flexible, well-proportioned physique 138.
Personality
Dugu Yan is proud, competitive, and initially contemptuous of lower-ranked opponents. Against Bone King, she grants him three uncontested moves because she believes her superior Soul Power and additional Soul Ring guarantee victory. After losing, she demands a rematch and vows to make him suffer with her poison 38 40 41.
Her determination can become dangerous stubbornness. During their second match, she refuses to accept another defeat even after being immobilized and nearly exhausting her Soul Power; Qin Ming intervenes before she can continue risking her life 43.
She is also diligent and willing to learn. Once Xia Liang offers a way to improve her poison without mixing it inside her body, she accepts his training conditions and repeatedly studies the energy he transfers into her 46 61 62.
Around people she trusts, she becomes playful, direct, and affectionate. She openly teases Xia Liang, enjoys his praise, and eventually acknowledges her feelings for him. She also apologizes when her grandfather and Yu Tianheng cause him trouble on her behalf 60 63 69 77.
Abilities & Skills
Poison Control
Her original combat style uses Jade Phosphor Serpent Poison Mist for area control, with three Soul Skills deployed as successive layers 41 42.
- First Soul Skill — Excitement Poison: One component of her three-layer poison formation 42.
- Second Soul Skill — Paralysis Poison: The second component of the formation 42.
- Third Soul Skill — Corrosion Poison / Jade Phosphor Purple Poison: A highly corrosive innate poison that affects allies and enemies alike and dissolves contaminated objects 42.
- Poison Mist Ray: Concentrates her third skill into a long-range stream with enhanced corrosion and an impact comparable to some Assault System skills; consumes substantial Soul Power 43.
- Early limitation: Before reaching Soul King, she must spray poison mist from her mouth. Xia Liang exploits this by blocking her mouth while restraining her 43 45.
- Defensive counters: Poison-resistant opponents weaken her control advantage. Xia Liang's protected skeleton withstands both her layered mist and concentrated ray 38 42 43.
Close-Range Combat
Her original serpent possession gives her a powerful tail for attacks and arena positioning 40 43.
- Uses evasive movement to create distance when an opponent approaches 43.
- Attempts to sweep Xia Liang off the platform with her three-meter tail from an unexpected angle 43.
- Her tail cannot overcome Xia Liang's rib defense during their second match 43.
Ring Fusion and External Mixed Poison
Xia Liang introduces Ring Fusion as a means of combining Soul Ring energies and producing Mixed Poison outside the body, avoiding the hazards of internal poison fusion 46.
- Trains by accepting his Ring Fusion energy and tracing how it circulates through her meridians 61 62.
- Temporarily gains enough combat strength to threaten a Soul Ancestor while still a Soul Elder 62.
- Her progress does not establish independent mastery in the detailed training scene: she tells Xia Liang that she still cannot find a way to fuse her own Soul Rings 63.
- Later, her evolved Poison Dragon attribute is described as capable of fusing various toxins 142.
Two-in-One Fusion Technique
During training, Xia Liang's Necromancer Skeleton energy interacts with her Jade Phosphor Serpent, producing a black-purple serpent covered in dark-green bone material 62.
- Xia Liang proposes using her as the combat focus while supplying Ring Fusion energy to create a bone-armored serpent 62.
- They continue practicing the Two-in-One Fusion Skill together at Dugu Manor 78.
- The technique is distinguished from a true Martial Soul Fusion Skill. Xia Liang considers a true fusion possible if her Martial Soul reaches sufficient quality and their mutual understanding develops 62.
- Transferring his Ring Fusion energy leaves Xia Liang weakened, which is why he requires control over their future cooperative technique 61 62.
Dragon Bloodline and Dragon Poison
Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng awakens the Five-Clawed Giant Dragon bloodline within her Martial Soul. Its initial Serpent Queen/Empress form prepares it for full dragon transformation 106 107.
- Flight: Gains the ability to soar without merging her legs into a snake tail 107.
- Scale armor: Provides some bodily defense and reduces air resistance 107.
- Dragon poison: Surpasses top-tier poison and approaches an extreme attribute. Without accounting for Soul Power amplification, its attribute quality exceeds Dugu Bo's poison at that stage 107.
- Full evolution: The Jade Phosphor Poison Dragon possesses nearly ultimate poison and removes her serpent poison backlash 138.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Ring Soul Tool — Stores ordinary items. She initially refuses an additional pouch because Soul Tools cannot be layered and carrying it during combat feels cumbersome 41.
- Ruyi Hundred Treasures Pouch — A living-creature storage tool offered by Dugu Bo for keeping poisonous snakes and scorpions. She retrieves it as a rematch wager and loses it to Xia Liang 41 43.
- Anti-Poison Pills — Dugu Bo's pills provide temporary poison resistance during poison preparation. She gives Xia Liang a bottle in return for his Ring Fusion and External Mixed Poison ideas; possessing them also identifies him as a friend she acknowledges 50.
- Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng and Evergreen Oil Hemp Vine — Consumed together under Dugu Bo's supervision to improve her Martial Soul, Soul Power, and body 101 106 107.
Relationships
- Dugu Bo — Grandfather, guardian, and poison instructor. Initially intimidating toward Xia Liang, he later actively encourages their relationship and supports efforts to cure her poison backlash 49 63 77 79 97.
- Xia Liang — Former arena opponent, Ring Fusion instructor, cultivation partner, and eventual boyfriend. Their romantic bond is tacitly acknowledged before Dugu Bo and explicitly established by their later reunion 61 101 106.
- Yu Tianheng — Captain and teammate who pursues her partly to secure Dugu Bo's backing. Her closeness with Xia Liang provokes his jealousy; after losing to Xia Liang, he abandons his pursuit 39 69 71.
- Qin Ming — Team teacher. Persuades her to accept Bone King's challenge and later concedes her rematch to protect her from a desperate continuation 39 43.
- Ye Lingling — Friend and teammate. Dugu Yan warns her away from Xia Liang after noticing his attention toward her 49 71.
- Tang San — Opposing vice-captain in the Imperial Fighting Team's battle against Shrek. His lethal hidden weapons trigger her dragon transformation, and she severely wounds him 117 138.
- Xue Qinghe / Qian Renxue — She addresses the crown prince as “Brother Xue” through Xia Liang's sworn brotherhood. Her farewell kiss to Xia Liang later unsettles Qian Renxue and disrupts an attempted Martial Soul fusion 106 138.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Bone King's Cross-Rank Challenges
Dugu Yan accepts Bone King's challenge after Yu Tianheng's persuasion, then recognizes him as the academy chef, Master Xia. Her decision to let him attack freely for three moves ends in defeat before she can use a Soul Skill 39 40.
She secures a rematch by wagering the Ruyi Hundred Treasures Pouch. This time, she uses her poison formation and concentrated third skill, but Xia Liang withstands both and immobilizes her. Qin Ming concedes on her behalf, and the pouch passes to Xia Liang 41 42 43.
From Rivalry to Cooperation
Rather than immediately granting another rematch, Xia Liang explains how Ring Fusion could improve her poison. Their lessons develop into regular cultivation sessions and increasingly affectionate exchanges 46 60 61 63.
Her gift of Anti-Poison Pills also gives Xia Liang a means to cross Dugu Bo's poison array and reach the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. Their relationship therefore becomes central to his access to Immortal Herbs 50 51 53.
Romance and Herbal Evolution
Dugu Yan admits to her grandfather that she likes Xia Liang but is not ready to rush their relationship. Xia Liang respects that boundary, choosing cultivation together rather than pressing her to advance it 77 78.
After Xia Liang studies herbology, he identifies Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng as a route to curing her backlash through Martial Soul evolution. She consumes it with Evergreen Oil Hemp Vine, takes leave from the academy, and returns as a level-43 Soul Ancestor with the evolved Serpent Queen/Empress 97 101 106 107.
Shrek Battle and Dragon Transformation
During the team battle in Soto City, Tang San resorts to lethal flying needles and crossbows after Xiao Wu is injured. Dugu Yan severely wounds him, and the danger from his hidden weapons forces her Martial Soul into its true dragon form 117 138.
Tang Hao retaliates against Dugu Bo for Tang San's injuries. The incident draws Xia Liang further into protecting the Dugu family and precedes the later conflict in which he helps Dugu Bo against Tang Hao 113 120.
Later Reunion
By their reunion at the academy, Dugu Yan is a Soul King with a Jade Phosphor Poison Dragon Martial Soul. She is frustrated by Xia Liang's prolonged absence, but accepts his proposal to cultivate together after the Elite Competition and accompany him on future travels if she wishes 138.
