Background / History

Dugu Family and the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well

Dugu Bo discovered the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well in middle age. Its surrounding heat, cold, and spiritual energy allowed him to suppress the Jade Phosphor Serpent Poison accumulating inside his body—a condition that had killed other members of his family. He claimed the surrounding medicinal garden and protected it with a poison array 52 64.

Although he survived to become a Titled Douluo, recurring poison attacks caused severe itching, convulsions, and pain. With Dugu Yan the family’s remaining descendant, finding a cure became essential to preventing the extinction of their Martial Soul lineage 64.

Dugu Bo later became a Heaven Dou Imperial Guest Official and sent Dugu Yan to Heaven Dou Royal Academy. His position made her a valuable connection for powerful families seeking a Titled Douluo’s support 36 39.

From Intimidating Xia Liang to Supporting Him

After Xia Liang defeated Dugu Yan twice, Dugu Bo confronted him at the academy and deliberately subjected him to spiritual pressure. He nevertheless acknowledged Xia Liang’s courage and the value of his advice on Ring Fusion and external Mixed Poison, confirming that the wagered Ruyi Hundred Treasures Pouch belonged to him 49.

His subsequent absence gave Xia Liang an opportunity to enter the medicinal garden and take Immortal Herbs. Upon returning, Dugu Bo discovered the missing plants and investigated Xia Liang. He eventually cleared him of suspicion, reasoning that someone who recognized the Singular Velvet Sky Chrysanthemum would not have left it behind when stealing valuable herbs 64 65 71 72 74.

Xia Liang’s efforts to treat Dugu Yan gradually won his trust. Dugu Bo allowed him to gather herbs, invited him to stay at Dugu Manor, and supplied an identity token to protect him while studying herbology with the Breaking Clan. Dugu Bo separately purchased the Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng from the Speed Clan 75 77 80 97.

Cure and Family Acceptance

After studying herbology, Xia Liang explained that awakening the serpent Martial Souls’ dragon bloodlines could remove their inherited poison flaw. Dugu Bo consumed the Earth Dragon Golden Gourd, leaving the higher-grade Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng for Dugu Yan 97.

The herb evolved his Martial Soul, raised his Soul Power to level 92, and ended his poison backlash. His greatest relief was that Dugu Yan could also be cured and their family no longer faced extinction 99.

Following a spar with Xia Liang, Dugu Bo accepted him as a prospective grandson-in-law and gave him a key to Dugu Manor. He also supervised Dugu Yan’s absorption of the herbs intended to evolve her Martial Soul 100 101.

Conflict with Tang Hao

Tang Hao first attacked Dugu Bo after Dugu Yan badly injured Tang San during a team Spirit Battle. Dugu Bo suffered a humiliating defeat and initially chose to accept the loss rather than escalate the conflict. Xia Liang’s promise to avenge him strengthened their sense of family 113.

Dugu Bo later targeted Xiao Wu after recognizing her as a hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast. Her abduction brought him into a lethal rematch with Tang Hao near the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 118 119.

During the battle, Dugu Bo used his evolved dragon form, poison domain, and earth control, but sustained severe injuries and nearly exhausted his Soul Power. Xia Liang intervened and performed a forced Martial Soul Fusion Skill with him. Tang Hao died in the confrontation 120 123 124.

Dugu Bo subsequently recovered with Ye Lingling’s treatment and Xia Liang’s medicinal herbs. Absorbing five of Tang Hao’s Soul Bones raised him to level 96 124.

Appearance

Dugu Bo is an elderly man with dark green hair and jade-green eyes. He frequently stands or walks with his hands clasped behind his back 49 71 80.

  • Poison aura: Before his cure, his presence could carry a distinctive fishy smell associated with Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor Poison 63 71.
  • Evolved Martial Soul: The Jade Scale Serpent Emperor retains a serpent’s shape but gains emerald dragon scales formed from earth and poison 99.
  • True Body: Initially manifests as a thirty-meter emerald python; later displays the Armored Jade Scaled Dragon Emperor form 114 120.

Personality

Dugu Bo is fiercely protective and possessive of Dugu Yan. Before granting his approval, he is openly hostile toward men who become close to her. Once he accepts Xia Liang, that protectiveness extends to him as well 49 63 113.

He is suspicious, intimidating, and willing to use threats to secure cooperation. He explicitly describes himself as someone who repays both kindness and grudges, rewarding Xia Liang for helping his granddaughter while remaining alert to possible deception 72 73 74.

Pride makes him reluctant to admit weakness: he repeatedly denies suffering from his own poison despite its severe backlash. Around trusted companions, however, he becomes playful, enjoys Xia Liang’s “Old Man” nickname, and actively meddles in his granddaughter’s romance 74 77 78 80 97.

His affection for family does not prevent ruthless behavior toward outsiders. His desire to capture Xiao Wu leads him to risk another confrontation with Tang Hao despite their earlier clash 118 119.

Abilities & Skills

Poison Manipulation

Dugu Bo specializes in Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor Poison, which develops into Dragon Emperor Poison after his Martial Soul’s draconic awakening 74 119 124.

  • Releases poison as mist for broad-area attacks and control 74.
  • Injects poison through barbs growing from his evolved scales while constricting an opponent 119.
  • Uses earth control to extend poison attacks underground 124.
  • Poison immunity can undermine his specialty; Xia Liang prepares to counter his remaining Soul Power attacks and Medusa Skull ability separately 58.

Jade Phosphor Serpent Poison Array

A defensive poison barrier surrounding his treasure ground in Sunset Forest 52.

  • Prevents intrusion by Soul Masters and Soul Beasts, including approaches from above 52.
  • Instantly destroys a scouting Gastly and dissolves the forearm of Xia Liang’s enhanced Giant Bone Hand in roughly two seconds 52.
  • Can be crossed with carefully timed protection from Anti-Poison Pills; the Aromatic Silk Beauty’s fragrance also neutralizes its poison 51 53 58.

Sand Poison Domain

An innate earth-and-poison domain awakened through the Earth Dragon Golden Gourd. It also serves as a Poison Sac for venom accumulated inside Dugu Bo’s body 99.

  • Initially envelops an area within a hundred meters in corrosive sand and dust 99.
  • Forces affected targets to expend Soul Power resisting the poison; exhausted victims gradually rot into sand 99.
  • Initially attacks allies and enemies indiscriminately. Dugu Bo believes greater earth control may eventually allow him to exempt allies 99.
  • Later spreads across several hundred meters during the battle with Tang Hao, corroding surrounding vegetation 119.

Earth Control and Earth Evasion

His awakened earth attribute provides detection, defense, and underground mobility 99 120.

  • Detects Soul Beast auras hundreds of meters beneath the ground 99.
  • Raises layered rock walls into a hemispherical shield 120.
  • Uses Earth Evasion to escape underground when Tang Hao destroys the shield 120.

True Body and High-Rank Soul Skills

Skill Slot Documented effect
Jade Scale Serpent Emperor True Body Seventh Soul Skill Transforms him into a thirty-meter emerald python; later takes the Armored Jade Scaled Dragon Emperor form 114 120.

Medusa’s Gaze

A petrification ability provided by his Medusa Head Soul Bone 115 119.

  • Petrifies the Shadow Lord so Xia Liang can deliver the killing blow 115.
  • Becomes stronger through the fusion of earth and poison attributes 119.
  • Can still be countered by sufficiently powerful attacks; Tang Hao shatters its beam using his enhanced Clear Sky Hammer 119.

Martial Soul Fusion with Xia Liang

Dugu Bo willingly lowers his defenses so Xia Liang can use Demonic Eye Soul Seizure and Undead Possession to control and possess him 120.

  • Produces a temporary armored dragon fusion form, described as dark purple 120.
  • During its formation, his thirty-meter jade-green dragon grows four limbs and assumes an Eastern-dragon shape 120.
  • Helps turn their confrontation with Tang Hao into a victory, but leaves Dugu Bo requiring treatment afterward 123 124.

Spiritual Perception and Aerial Travel

  • Extends spiritual perception across approximately a thousand meters when searching for intruders or missing targets 65 114.
  • Travels through the air using Titled Douluo-level Soul Power rather than an innate flying ability, carrying Xia Liang to Death Canyon 113.
