Background / History
The Heavenly Dao was seriously injured by an unidentified attack before Hongjun’s ascension. Hongjun exploited its weakened condition to Prove the Dao through Heavenly Dao power and become a Saint 10.
It subsequently worked with Hongjun on the Primordial World’s larger arrangements. It advised him to entice Houtu into transforming into Reincarnation, thereby reducing the Witch Clan’s strength, while withholding part of its information from him 50. Pingxin later suspected that both the Heavenly Dao and Hongjun had orchestrated her transformation into Reincarnation 102.
Its intended arrangement for Humanity failed when Nuwa created the Human Race and Proved the Dao through Creation rather than becoming a Heavenly Dao Saint. Had Nuwa followed the intended path, Humanity would have become subject to the Heavenly Dao; instead, Nuwa’s Creation Great Dao and the Human Race remained outside its control 88 106.
During the Witch-Demon War, the Heavenly Dao backed the Demon Race’s perceived mandate and arranged to restrain forces capable of upsetting the conflict’s planned outcome 165 171. Cheng Yue openly challenged it, causing it to retreat, before later fighting it in Chaos and temporarily exiling it. The exile caused the realms of Heavenly Dao Saints, including Hongjun, to decline 172 173.
Following repeated interference by Cheng Yue, the Heavenly Dao increasingly compromised. It postponed the Great Tribulation and Investiture of the Gods Tribulation, negotiated with Pingxin over the Witch Clan’s safety, and ultimately allowed the Witch Clan and Demon Race to coexist after Cheng Yue halted their war 201 203 210.
Appearance
The Heavenly Dao has no confirmed fixed body. It most often manifests as an enormous eye, including a giant vertical pupil before Pingxin and an eye-shaped form in Chaos 165 173 203.
- Its Eye can appear in the sky to convey its will or influence events. 165
- In Chaos, it fought Cheng Yue without assuming a physical form. 173
- Its otherwise emotionless eyes have displayed panic, reluctance, and disbelief when confronted by Cheng Yue. 172 199
Disposition
The Heavenly Dao is calculating and protective of its authority. It pursues arrangements that consolidate the Primordial World under its influence, particularly through Heavenly Dao Saints, Humanity, and the resolution of major calamities 53 106 150.
Despite its grand designs, it is cautious around superior forces. It avoids direct confrontation with Cheng Yue, fears the consequences of being exiled again, and repeatedly yields when his interference threatens its stability 172 205 210.
Its priorities shift when its own advancement is at stake. After learning of Grand Unity Heaven, it abandoned immediate calamity planning in favor of waiting for Cheng Yue’s return; later, it sought his guidance on advancing by expanding the Primordial World 237 259.
Abilities & Authority
Heavenly Dao Saint Authority
The Heavenly Dao can support Saints through Primordial Violet Qi, which allows a cultivator to entrust their Primordial Spirit to it. A Heavenly Dao Saint can wield part of its authority and remains immortal so long as the Heavenly Dao endures 53.
- Its Saint system is distinct from Proving the Dao to Primordial Unity. 53
- Hongjun’s status and power are directly tied to it; when Cheng Yue exiled the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun and other Saints suffered realm decline. 173
- It attempted to draw Cheng Yue into its system by offering him Heavenly Dao Saint Attainment, but Cheng Yue refused. 205
Fate, Calamities, and Grand Trends
The Heavenly Dao establishes broad trends and calamity arrangements for the Primordial World, including plans involving the Witch Clan, Demon Race, Humanity, and Investiture of the Gods 50 106 171.
- It planned for Houtu’s transformation into Reincarnation to weaken the Witch Clan. 50
- It intended Humanity to fall under its control through Nuwa’s expected Heavenly Dao Saint status. 106
- It could postpone the Great Tribulation and the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation. 201
- Cheng Yue’s interventions repeatedly disrupted its “script,” including the intended fates of Houtu, the Witch-Demon War, Heavenly Marriage, and Di Jun. 235
Formations and Spiritual Treasures
The Heavenly Dao is associated with a Heaven and Earth Great Formation studied by Nuwa and Zhenyuanzi, who identified it as a Heavenly Dao creation 152.
- It can manifest numerous Spiritual Treasures and use them to launch divine-light attacks. 173
- It produced the Book of Marriage, red threads, and clay figures when Cheng Yue demanded that Humanity’s marriage-related authority be returned. 205
- It removed Ao Caizhu’s karma after Cheng Yue demanded it, on the condition that he aid only her. 183
Limits
The Heavenly Dao’s authority is not absolute.
- Nuwa’s Creation Great Dao and the Human Race developed beyond its intended control. 106
- The newly born Earthly Dao limited its ability to act freely against Pingxin, though it remained stronger than the immature Earthly Dao. 203
- Cheng Yue can threaten it into concessions and has previously exiled it through the Great Dao of Space. 173 205
- Its advancement depends on the expansion of the Primordial World; Cheng Yue states that greater expansion will increase its authority. 259
