Background / History

Cheng Yue spent one hundred years in secluded cultivation before ascending as a Golden Immortal. His breakthrough is interrupted by Nuwa, then a snake-tailed girl accusing him of taking a treasure from her territory. Though initially reluctant to accept her appearance, he accepts her as his first disciple after she transforms her tail into human legs. He subsequently leaves the valley for the South Sea to avoid future turmoil. 1 2

On an unowned South Sea island, Cheng Yue creates a palace and protective formations for Nuwa. The act draws descending merit, which condenses into a golden wheel behind him. He passes the Daoist Canon and its ten divine abilities to Nuwa, while mistakenly treating the already powerful Nuwa as a Heavenly Immortal. 3

For much of his early life in the Primordial World, Cheng Yue misunderstands both his own position and the local cultivation hierarchy. Although Hongjun and others regard him as an overwhelming threat, Cheng Yue believes himself merely a Golden Immortal with limited means of self-protection. His encounter with the Human Race eventually reveals that he is widely recognized as a Great Power and Nuwa’s master. 7 95 96

Cheng Yue gradually becomes involved in the future of the Human Race, the Dragon Race, and the Witch–Demon conflict. He arranges Fuxi’s reincarnation into Humanity, supports the Dragon Race’s role as Humanity’s totem, and favors influencing major figures over directly confronting the Heavenly Dao or the Witch Clan. 96 98 121

After relocating his Daoist sanctum to the Three Immortals Islands, Cheng Yue pursues formations, artifact refining, and the path to Grand Unity Heaven. His search eventually takes him through Chaos, where Chaos Demon Gods impart their Great Daos to him and Pangu reveals that Cheng Yue must perfect all Three Thousand Great Daos to reach Grand Unity Heaven. 192 235 242

Cheng Yue is cautious, private, and initially reluctant to become entangled in the Primordial World’s major conflicts. He repeatedly tries to avoid attention, relocates his island after outsiders discover it, and hesitates to confront the Heavenly Dao until he better understands his own strength. 43 57 98

Despite that caution, he is deeply protective of his disciples. He accepts Fuxi at Nuwa’s request, helps Houtu despite wishing to avoid Witch Clan affairs, gives Zhenyuanzi protective tokens containing his full-force strike, and takes responsibility for safeguarding the Human Race. 26 28 179

He is curious and often approaches cultivation through experimentation. This extends to formations, spiritual treasures, and unusual artifact functions; he will casually use a fallen star as refining material or challenge disciples to discover the hidden functions he placed in their treasures. 142 178 223

Cheng Yue also has a self-conscious side. He is embarrassed by the beatings he received from the Chaos Demon Ape and Pangu, fears the story becoming public, and attempts to make Pangu keep it secret. 256
