Background

Jiraiya is one of Sarutobi Hiruzen’s three disciples alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. Despite being regarded as a Sannin, he considers himself less suited to mentoring than his two teammates and initially questions why Shimura Kentei chooses him as a prospective teacher. 10

He is a devoted reader of Master Yunzhong Niao’s novels and accepts Kentei’s apprenticeship after receiving first editions of the author’s works, including Ninpō Sōkyū. He then asks Hiruzen to appoint him as a jōnin team leader and include Kentei in his squad. 10

Kentei instead becomes Tsunade’s disciple, leaving Jiraiya guilty that his own actions inadvertently led to Tsunade taking the student he wanted. Jiraiya nevertheless continues to regard Kentei as his disciple, shares the Child of Destiny prophecy with him, and later gives him the Lion Scroll. 15 68

Personality

Jiraiya is lecherous, impulsive, and easily distracted by women; his repeated attempts to peep on Tsunade result in severe injuries on multiple occasions. 9 12 64 He is also an enthusiastic collector and reader of erotic fiction, though he is sensitive about being judged for it. 8 10

Beneath this immaturity, he genuinely seeks peace and takes the Great Toad Sage’s prophecy seriously. He is troubled by recurring wars, questions whether the ninja world can achieve true peace, and hopes to find and guide the Child of Destiny. 15 64 150

His idealism often conflicts with Kentei’s harsh political analysis. Jiraiya rejects the idea that unifying the ninja world would necessarily bring peace, fearing concentrated power would create corruption comparable to that of the feudal lords. 25 68

Jiraiya is dependable in immediate crises but repeatedly avoids political responsibility. He refuses the Fifth Hokage position after Minato’s death, citing guilt and a lack of confidence, and later leaves Konoha to investigate the Four Great Shinobi Nations. 441 435
