History

Founding and early village system

Konoha was established when Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara united their forces. Their overwhelming strength compelled the Land of Fire’s Feudal Lord’s Government to recognize the village, helping establish the one-village-per-country shinobi system at the first Five Kage Summit 374 385.

Some of Konoha’s earliest residences were reportedly created directly by Hashirama’s Wood Release, including the seamless wooden mansion later used by Tsunade 28.

The village’s relationship with the Land of Fire’s government was structurally tense. Konoha retained practical control over appointing its Hokage, demanded military funding, and accepted missions across national borders despite nominally serving as the country’s military protector 65.

Strength and rivalry

Konoha accumulated the Ninja World’s largest concentration of Kekkei Genkai clans, secret-jutsu clans, and resources from the prosperous Land of Fire. Its strength made other villages fear its continued growth and contributed to repeated efforts to contain or besiege it during the Ninja World Wars 65.

By the conflict against the Five Great Nations’ samurai forces, Konoha was considered several times stronger than any of the other four great shinobi villages; the samurai of the Land of Fire and Land of Iron had to join forces against it 404.

Ninja-Samurai Academy

Konoha established a Ninja-Samurai Academy with support from the Land of Fire’s Feudal Lord’s Government. Its first intake reached 200,000 students, with the government pledging support regardless of enrollment 203.

The academy became a major source of civilian loyalty outside the traditional shinobi clans. When Konoha’s shinobi population later prepared to relocate, most civilian families—particularly those connected to the academy and the Temple of Wood—refused to leave 409.

Migration and restructuring

At the end of the Second Shinobi World War, Shimura Kentei granted the Five Great Shinobi Villages thirty years of peace while ordering their relocation away from the mainland 408. Konoha received the resource-rich Land of Whirlpools and the Land of Fire peninsula as its new territory 409.

The relocation exposed a divide between Konoha’s ninja clans and civilian population. The clans departed, but the overwhelming majority of civilians remained behind, leaving the village without the broad population base needed to sustain large numbers of civilian shinobi 409.

After the departure of the major ninja clans, the Shimura Family occupied their former lands, took over the Hokage Building, and flattened the three faces carved into Hokage Rock, regarding the former Hokages as discredited by their alliance with Evil Entities 410.

Shinobi nation era

Konoha later became a shinobi nation alongside the other four great villages. The new regime expanded its population and chakra research, including experiments with artificial human cultivation; the program was eventually abandoned because its products had limited potential and abnormal emotions 424 449.

Sarutobi Hiruzen declared the Third Great Ninja War after Evil Beasts invaded Konoha and announced his intention to abdicate afterward, seeking to use war to resolve internal conflict within the nation 424. Following a later Evil Entity crisis, he transferred the Hokage position to Minato Namikaze 435.

Government and society

• Hokage system — Konoha was traditionally led by the Hokage, though the position’s authority was constrained by powerful clans and competing factions 424.
• Shinobi clans — Major clans historically held much of Konoha’s military power and later evacuated during the migration crisis 409.
• Civilian population — Civilian families became politically significant through the Ninja-Samurai Academy and resisted the Hokage-led evacuation order 409.
• Root — Sarutobi Shin'nosuke’s Root division enforced control within Konoha City; civilians attempting to leave the city were reported to disappear 473.

• Hokage Rock — A public vantage point used for major events and duels; its three carved Hokage faces were later flattened by the Shimura Family 244 410.
• Hokage Building — Former Hokage headquarters, later repurposed as the Konoha Village Committee office 410.
• Ninja-Samurai Academy — A mass-enrollment school supported by the Land of Fire’s government, central to Konoha’s civilian population and ideological development 203 409.

• Shimura Family — A powerful Konoha clan that eventually seized administrative control of the remaining village after the clan migration 410.
• Four Great Shinobi Villages — Longstanding rivals that alternated between joint pressure against Konoha and alliances during larger crises 65 409.

Current condition

Konoha City remains a frequent target of the Twilight Organization, suffering devastating attacks roughly every six months 471. Reconstruction continues after each conflict, as relocation beyond the city is considered unsafe due to surrounding clan-controlled territory and recurring warfare near the capital 473.
