Background / History

Early alliances and political violence

Danzō and Sarutobi Hiruzen grew up together, attended school together, and served as teammates. Their clans had maintained an alliance since the Warring States Period, including intermarriages and cooperation between Sarutobi Fire Release and Shimura Wind Release. Both men were trained by the First and Second Hokage 5 85.

After Hiruzen became Hokage, Senju elders still occupied much of Konoha’s leadership. Danzō supported Hiruzen’s faction against them, while his own marriage strengthened the Shimura Clan’s connections to the Feudal Lord’s Government 3 5 481.

Danzō secretly killed his former teammate Uchiha Kagami because Kagami’s proposed Uchiha–Senju reconciliation threatened their political interests. He ambushed Kagami after the latter sacrificed a Mangekyō Sharingan to use Izanagi, removed his eyes, preserved his corpse in Research Institute Number One, and extracted Izanagi’s secrets from his brain 134.

Protecting Kentei and expanding the clan

Danzō recognizes Kentei’s exceptional value early. When his son enters a mysterious flower tree in the Death Forest, he mobilizes every clan jōnin, retrieves the relevant material, and burns the remaining tree to conceal the evidence 5 41.

He recruits smaller clans and talented civilians while protecting the source of the Shimura Body Strengthening Secret Techniques. His supposed “Zero Research Institute” is a fabrication designed to give Kentei’s discoveries a plausible institutional origin 28 49.

Although indebted to his Hokage teachers, Danzō becomes more willing to act against the Senju after learning that they hired bounty hunters to ambush and castrate Kentei. He orders his guards to protect his son without revealing the affair to him 67.

Loulan and the Sunagakure conflict

Danzō intervenes in the Land of Wind with his Sage Mode Cursed Seal and later deploys the clan’s previously concealed force of more than one hundred jōnin. He positions his people outside Loulan to avoid antagonizing its queen and inhabitants 126 136.

Initially inclined to kill the Third Kazekage, he accepts Kentei’s argument that a crippled, discredited ruler would weaken Sunagakure more effectively from within. Danzō defeats the Kazekage’s Iron Sand attacks with Wind Release Chakra Mode and takes responsibility for the scheme after the Kazekage loses a leg 136 138 140.

The subsequent operation beneath Loulan targets the Evil Entity rather than the already-depleted Dragon Vein. Jiraiya and Orochimaru’s interference allows the creature to escape, turning Danzō’s containment work into a wider international crisis 147 150 151.

Danzō also investigates Gelel ore and plans an overseas clan sub-base on a continent comparable in size to the Land of Fire. He supports collecting war orphans as future subordinates, describing them bluntly as potential cannon fodder 152 153 154.

Danzō becomes both Kentei’s collaborator and student, receiving techniques through direct mental transfer. Break with Konoha

Danzō’s increasing strength makes Hiruzen uneasy, but he initially preserves their friendship. When offered the prospect of succeeding as Hokage, he refuses: his ambitions have moved beyond the office, and he recommends Jiraiya or Tsunade instead 245 320.

He uses technique sales to draw chakra metal out of other clans’ reserves and plans for the Shimura family to abandon chakra in favor of Immortal Yuan Power. Meanwhile, he deliberately lets Orochimaru overhear a conversation intended to damage the disciple’s relationship with Hiruzen 321.

During the Land of Water operation, Danzō helps use the Evil Entity as bait for the Five Great Shinobi Villages and the Moon Ōtsutsuki. He fights alongside the allied Madara using a Wood Release giant Buddha, then activates God Tree Mode against Doujin. Hiruzen’s involvement in the opposing coalition finally breaks their old bond 372 377 378 380.

Danzō later leads the Shimura response to the threatened Land of Whirlpools. In the war’s concluding battle, he devours the Ten-Tails God Tree and joins Madara against the Evil Entity. The war ends with the Shimura family’s departure and Kentei’s thirty-year agreement with Hashirama 399 408.

The Empire and Hiruzen’s confession

Within the Myriad Stars Empire, Danzō supports research into attribute fusion and supplies Shisui Uchiha’s Mangekyō Sharingan for Kentei’s proposed modifications to the Infinite Tsukuyomi virtual world 442.

After Uchiha Izumi implicates Hiruzen and Biwako in Kentei’s mother’s death, Danzō teleports from the Empire to confront his former friend. Hiruzen admits that fear of losing the Hokage position drove him to plot against Danzō’s wife and her politically advantageous marriage 476 481.

Despite his personal hurt, Danzō remains composed enough to destroy Naruto and Second Pillar’s attack. After Kentei kills the Sage of Six Paths, Danzō takes charge of eliminating any surviving contingencies 481 489.
