Background / History

Konoha and Defection

Orochimaru was once celebrated alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade as one of Konoha's Three Sannin. Although he had contributed greatly to the village and was considered for Hokage, his teacher Hiruzen Sarutobi rejected him because of the darkness in his heart. After Hiruzen discovered Orochimaru's secret human experiments, Orochimaru fled Konoha rather than submit to capture. 2

Following his defection, Orochimaru conducted Hashirama-cell transplantation experiments on Akihara Kagura. Kagura's successful integration was an accident from Orochimaru's perspective, but Orochimaru regarded the child as his most perfect creation and repeatedly claimed credit for Kagura's Wood Release. 5 124

Orochimaru sent Kagura into Konoha to study Wood Release, monitor Orochimaru's alliance with Shimura Danzō, and gather intelligence from inside the village. 2 89

Interest in Akatsuki

Initially dismissing Akatsuki as an organization led by inexperienced Konoha defectors, Orochimaru nevertheless began investigating it after learning that its intelligence network had uncovered Kagura's connection to him. Orochimaru eventually joined Akatsuki because of the Rinnegan and the Ten-Tails' shell.
