Background / History
Kakashi lost his father to suicide during childhood. His formative years were then defined by repeated wartime losses: Obito Uchiha was believed killed at Kannabi Bridge, Rin Nohara later died by Kakashi’s hand, and his teacher and teacher’s wife died during the Nine-Tails’ Rampage. These losses left him isolated and emotionally directionless during his Anbu years. 35 51
During the Third Great Ninja War, Obito gave Kakashi his Sharingan after Kakashi lost an eye and asked him to protect Rin. Kakashi personally buried Obito, making Obito’s later reappearance as the Masked Man a profound shock. 51
Appearance
Kakashi is recognizable for his white hair, face mask, and the Sharingan concealed beneath his forehead protector or eye covering. 54 68 505
- White-haired jōnin whose hair is visibly blown by the heat of his own Earth Style defense. 54
- Keeps his transplanted Sharingan covered when not using it. 68 482
- Later wields Mangekyō Sharingan eyes and Kamui. 256 316 345
Personality
Kakashi is reserved, weary, and shaped by survivor’s guilt, particularly over Rin and Obito. Even after learning that Obito survived and blames him for Rin’s death, Kakashi continues trying to understand and save his former teammate rather than simply kill him. 51 80 95
He values comrades above tactical expediency. He rejects Tobirama’s suggestion to use Sasuke as bait and continues fighting despite exhaustion because he is responsible for Team 7. 187 188
As a mentor, Kakashi is observant and demanding. He recognizes Akihara Kagura’s extreme tendencies, guides his use of dangerous techniques, and pushes Naruto and Sakura after witnessing Sasuke’s rapid growth. 83 95 252
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Kakashi’s transplanted Sharingan grants him visual analysis, genjutsu detection, and the ability to read an opponent’s movements.
- Identified that the Fourth Mizukage had long been controlled by Sharingan genjutsu. 68
- Used the Sharingan to locate the escape route in Sasuke’s blade-and-wire trap against Tobirama. 188
- His non-Uchiha body cannot deactivate the eye, causing constant chakra leakage. 82
- Mangekyō use causes intense physical and mental strain. 253 505
Kamui
Kakashi’s Mangekyō ability sends targets and attacks into the shared Kamui dimension connected to Obito.
- Removed Deidara from the battlefield when he attempted to self-destruct. 256
- Redirected a projectile that would have struck Chiyo into Kamui. 256
- Can send attacks into Kamui to strike Obito despite his intangibility. 304
- After the Sage of Six Paths’ empowerment, can manifest Perfect Susanoo and use Kamui without normal limits. 345
- Kagura’s Rinnegan space-time interference may prevent Kamui from functioning reliably against him. 338
Flying Thunder God Technique
Kakashi studies Minato’s signature space-time technique to counter Obito and carry on his teacher’s legacy.
- Received Minato’s scroll and learning notes directly from Hiruzen. 80
- Initially struggled to condense the spatial-coordinate mark because of chakra leakage and the technique’s high chakra cost. 82 111
- Uses oversized marks as teleportation anchors, including a ground mark broad enough to evade an opponent’s notice. 252
- Regards his own Flying Thunder God as incomplete even after becoming capable of practical teleportation. 252
Lightning and Earth Style
Kakashi combines Lightning Release, Earth Release, and battlefield deception.
- Earth Style: Earth Flow Wall — Raises a dog-faced earth barrier to block Obito’s Great Fireball Technique. 54
- Lightning Clone — Uses a lightning-bodied clone to counter Sasuke’s apparent finishing move. 252
- Chidori / Lightning Blade — Creator of the technique; later teaches it to Sasuke. 487
- Earth Style: Headhunter Jutsu — Attempts to drag Sasuke underground after catching him off guard. 252
Swordsmanship and Taijutsu
Kakashi is an experienced close-range fighter who once built a reputation through swordsmanship before relying more heavily on Lightning Release.
- Blocks and counters Sasuke’s Kusanagi Sword during their formal challenge. 252
- Uses taijutsu, shuriken, and ninjutsu in combination against Obito, though Obito’s intangibility renders direct attacks ineffective. 54
- Battles Tobirama through a coordinated Flying Thunder God formation despite exhaustion and injuries. 188
Ninken Summoning
Kakashi maintains a summoning contract with eight ninken, particularly Pakkun.
- Uses his ninken and Summoning Technique research to better understand space-time coordinates for Flying Thunder God. 111
Relationships
- Obito Uchiha — Former teammate believed dead at Kannabi Bridge; Obito later resurfaces as the Masked Man and blames Kakashi for Rin’s death. Kakashi remains determined to bring him back and ultimately receives Obito’s Kamui eye. 51 80 316
- Rin Nohara — Former teammate whom Obito entrusted Kakashi to protect. Her death at Kakashi’s hand remains the central source of his guilt. 51
- Minato Namikaze — Former teacher whose Flying Thunder God Technique Kakashi seeks to master. 80 82
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Hokage who assigns Kakashi and Tenzo to train Akihara Kagura and later provides Kakashi with Minato’s Flying Thunder God scroll. 35 80
- Akihara Kagura — Former subordinate and trainee under Kakashi. Their relationship develops into friendship and mutual reliance, but later fractures when Kagura becomes an enemy of the shinobi world. 35 83 329
- Tenzo / Yamato — Anbu comrade and fellow instructor assigned to train Kagura; both share experience with Wood Release users. 35 39
- Uchiha Itachi — Former subordinate whom Kakashi later confronts as an Akatsuki operative; Kakashi distrusts him but recognizes his danger and his connection to Sasuke. 220 218 505
- Sasuke Uchiha / Second Pillar — Student whose growth Kakashi oversees, tests, and praises. Kakashi worries about Sasuke’s revenge-driven choice to join Root. 252 487 503
- Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno — Team 7 students whom Kakashi trains strictly after their progress falls far behind Sasuke’s. 252
- Might Guy — Fellow Konoha jōnin and taijutsu specialist; Guy frames his Eight Gates technique as part of their “battle of youth.” 166 338
- Zabuza Momochi — Former enemy assigned under Kakashi’s command in the Allied Shinobi Forces’ Third Unit. 325
Story Role / Major Arcs
Chunin Exam and Anbu mentorship
Kakashi infiltrates the Chunin Exam written-test venue in disguise, tricks the examinees into leaving, and reveals himself to Itachi after Itachi sees through the deception. 25
After the exam, Hiruzen orders Kakashi and Tenzo to train Akihara Kagura in Anbu. Kakashi accepts despite recognizing Kagura’s deficient basic education and extreme personality. 35
Obito’s return
Kakashi recognizes the Masked Man as Obito after Kagura exposes his identity. The encounter forces Kakashi to confront both Obito’s survival and the accusation that Kakashi failed Rin. 51
Kakashi and Kagura fight Obito together, but Obito’s phasing ability prevents Kakashi from landing meaningful attacks. Kakashi ultimately lets Obito escape to protect Naruto. 54 55
Pursuit of Obito
Kakashi investigates Obito’s movements with Kagura, Itachi, and other Konoha operatives. He enters Iwagakure alone, prepared to sacrifice himself if it will bring Obito back. 59 95 96
He is captured by Iwagakure during the operation and later rescued through Kagura’s hostage exchange. Following the rescue, Kakashi apologizes for misunderstanding Kagura’s past. 101 103
Team 7 instructor
Kakashi becomes the jōnin instructor of Team 7 and continues to prioritize his students’ survival over victory. During Orochimaru’s attack involving the reanimated First and Second Hokage, he fights Tobirama, protects Team 7, and stalls until Kagura arrives. 182 188
He later evaluates Sasuke in a formal master-disciple challenge. Although Sasuke would likely have killed him in a real fight, Kakashi counters with experience, deception, Lightning Clone, Earth Style, and Flying Thunder God. 252
Akatsuki conflicts
Kakashi confronts Itachi and Kisame when they infiltrate Konoha. In a later confrontation, he protects Asuma and Kurenai, evacuates them when Kagura arrives, and secretly observes Itachi’s failed attempt to use Tsukuyomi against Kagura. 218 505
During the mission to recover Gaara, Kakashi uses Kamui to neutralize Deidara’s self-destruction and protect Chiyo. His repeated use of the shared Kamui dimension accidentally creates hazards for Obito. 256
Fourth Shinobi World War
Kakashi receives Obito’s Kamui Mangekyō Sharingan after Obito chooses to atone through the Rebirth Technique. 316
He commands the Allied Shinobi Forces’ Third Unit, where he is assigned the uncomfortable task of fighting beside Zabuza. 325
During the final conflict against Kagura, the Sage of Six Paths enhances Kakashi’s ocular power, granting him access to Perfect Susanoo and greatly strengthened Kamui. 345
Alternate-world side story
In the alternate world experienced by Second Pillar, Kakashi is more emotionally numb and does not know that Obito survived or the truth behind Rin’s death. 483
He still serves as Team 7’s instructor and recognizes Second Pillar’s Three-Tomoe Sharingan, swordsmanship, and maturity as jōnin-level threats rather than ordinary genin talent. 482 486
