Background / History

Old Jack served as Holy Soul Village’s chief for decades. He encouraged each generation of children by pointing to the handprint on the village pillar, presenting it as the legacy of a Soul Saint. He publicly named Ning Qiu as his intended successor once the boy reached adulthood. 1 4

His family history is tied to the pillar. Old Jack’s grandfather was a level-71 Soul Saint with the same sickle Martial Soul; after an Evil Soul Master caused his wife’s death, he struck the pillar in grief and helplessness, leaving the handprint behind. Old Jack later reveals that the mark represents the village’s suffering rather than its glory. 24

Though he cultivated diligently, Old Jack considered his Martial Soul and talent too limited to reach the highest ranks. His experience made him wary of the dangers awaiting villagers who became Soul Masters, particularly the possibility that they would be drawn into conflict and bloodshed. 24 26

When Ning Qiu demonstrated that he could transform the village’s future, Old Jack yielded the chiefship despite his attachment to Balak Kingdom rules. He became Holy Soul Village’s first registered villager by voluntarily swearing its oath. 21 22

Old Jack is an elderly man with cloudy eyes, a hoarse voice, and a habitual cane. In later appearances, he is described as hunched, with white hair at his temples. 18 144 175

Personality

Old Jack is benevolent, protective, and deeply invested in Holy Soul Village’s future. He supports gifted children, including Tang San and Ning Qiu, and measures success by whether the village can produce strong Soul Masters. 4 20

He is also stubbornly principled. He initially refuses to transfer the chiefship to underage Ning Qiu because of established law, even when the villagers demand it. 21 His caution is grounded in experience: he understands that strength brings danger and worries that the villagers’ new path will expose them to the wider soul master world. 24

Despite believing that his own potential is limited, Old Jack has no greed for Xiao Wu’s hundred-thousand-year soul beast status. He agrees to safeguard her identity and ultimately gives Ning Qiu his unwavering support. 26 80

Old Jack recognizes Ning Qiu’s contributions but initially insists that he wait until adulthood to inherit the chiefship. As the villagers demand immediate change, Old Jack chooses the village’s future over precedent and steps down. 4 21

Star Dou Great Forest Journey

He accompanies Ning Qiu and Xiao Wu to the Star Dou Great Forest, revealing his Soul King cultivation to deter a robber. During the journey, he learns Xiao Wu’s true identity and travels on the Titan Giant Ape’s shoulder to Star Lake. 25 26 27

Bandit Suppression
