Background / History

Qianyuan entered Maoshan roughly a century before Zhong Bai. Like his eventual disciple, he lost his family to rampant demons; he alone survived the destruction of a family numbering more than one hundred. His master cared for him in the same manner that Qianyuan later cares for Zhong Bai, establishing a tradition he considers part of Maoshan's inheritance 3.

As a Law Enforcement Hall elder, he is responsible for disciple recruitment and for confronting serious threats. He normally does not leave Maoshan unless a great demon or a Foundation Establishment-level Ghost General appears in the mortal world 11 38.

He recognizes Zhong Bai's resolve during the Maoshan entrance examination and accepts him into the Law Enforcement Hall. He subsequently provides the youth with cultivation resources, personal guidance, protection during breakthroughs, and opportunities to gain field experience 1 3 11 13.

Appearance

Qianyuan is an elderly Daoist whose appearance remains essentially unchanged across the years. He carries an immortal, composed bearing, though his eyes can become sharp and profound when assessing another person 1 10 38.

  • An old Daoist master with a calm, dignified presence.
  • Possesses deep, discerning eyes that briefly seem able to see through others 1.
  • Often cultivates beside the Kui Niu Drum within the Law Enforcement Hall 3 10.

Personality

Qianyuan is perceptive and bluntly realistic. He mocks Zhong Bai's youthful declaration to cleanse the Nine Provinces of demons, yet values that same ambition, believing a young person without spirit is merely “waiting to die” 1.

He is deeply protective of his sole disciple. His concern extends beyond cultivation dangers: before Zhong Bai descends Maoshan, he warns him that human hearts can be more dangerous than demons and stresses Maoshan's prohibition against indiscriminately killing innocents 20. He also worries that worldly comforts, wealth, or beauty may distract Zhong Bai while stationed in Jiuquan Town 37.

Despite his stern position in the Law Enforcement Hall, Qianyuan does not pry into Zhong Bai's extraordinary cultivation speed. He explicitly accepts that everyone has secrets, provided Zhong Bai does not harm mortals or practice evil arts; he pledges both his own support and Maoshan's protection 48.

Abilities & Skills

Thunder Techniques

Qianyuan possesses formidable lightning-based Daoist arts, able to unleash Heavenly Thunder with overwhelming destructive force.

  • Purple lightning radiates from his body and spreads through the ground to annihilate an entire Crimson Viper Swarm 48.
  • His arrival alone leaves the heavily wounded Long-Scaled Snake General too intimidated to resist 48.
  • His thunder arts are considered overwhelmingly dangerous even by True Immortal Changsheng 48.

Kui Niu Drum Invocation

Qianyuan can summon a phantom of the Law Enforcement Hall's Kui Niu Drum in battle.

  • Condenses both the Kui Niu Drum phantom and a phantom drumstick to attack 74.
  • The appearance of the drum phantom signifies overwhelming power against opponents below the Golden Core realm 74.
  • He uses the Drum's power during the campaign against the Corpse Refining Demonic Heavenly Sect 74.

Divine Sense

As a Foundation Establishment cultivator, Qianyuan has potent divine sense.

  • Detects Zhong Bai's Qi Condensation breakthrough from the Law Enforcement Hall 8.

Golden Light Divine Incantation

Qianyuan cultivates the Golden Light Divine Incantation, one of the Eight Great Daoist Incantations.

  • Uses it as a defensive spiritual ability 14.

  • Later transmits the incantation to Zhong Bai 49.

Shrinking the Ground into Inches

Qianyuan cultivates a fragmented version of the great travel spiritual ability Shrinking the Ground into Inches.

  • Uses it as his movement spiritual ability 14.
  • Offers to teach the fragmented technique to Zhong Bai 14.

  • True Immortal Zhang Qingyun — Old friend and Grand Elder of Longhu Mountain; the two reunite during the Taoist sects' expedition against the Corpse Refining Demonic Heavenly Sect 68 75.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recruitment of Zhong Bai

Qianyuan evaluates Zhong Bai at Maoshan's entrance test and is impressed by his determination without being swayed by empty flattery. He accepts Zhong Bai into the Law Enforcement Hall and begins personally raising him as its prospective successor 1 3 4.

Zhong Bai's Early Cultivation

He transmits the Supreme Clarity Body Forging Art, supplies food and pills, warns against damaging one's meridians, and takes Zhong Bai to the Scripture Repository Pavilion to select the Divine Firmament Five Thunder Art 3 4 6. He later oversees Zhong Bai's Qi Condensation breakthroughs and repeatedly cautions him that Thunder Techniques consume immense True Essence 8 13.

First Descent from Maoshan

After Zhong Bai's ordination, Qianyuan personally brings him to Qian Family Village for practical experience against a vengeful ghost. He observes from outside the manor while Zhong Bai faces the Wedding Dress Ghostess alone 11 12.

Before Zhong Bai establishes a Daoist temple in Jiuquan Town, Qianyuan gives him the Cosmic Ring and instructs him to remain principled, decisive, and cautious of human malice 20.

Crimson Viper Den Incident

Qianyuan arrives amid the conflict with the Long-Scaled Snake General, destroys the Crimson Viper Swarm with Heavenly Thunder, and takes custody of the Snake General for medicinal refinement 48. He then reassures Zhong Bai that Maoshan will not covet his secrets or condemn his rapid advancement without evidence of wrongdoing 48 49.

Campaign Against the Corpse Refining Demonic Heavenly Sect

After Zhong Bai captures a demonic sect disciple, Qianyuan directs True Immortal Bailong to perform Soul Searching and traces the information to Ghost Wolf Mountain 64. He later joins the inter-sect expedition against the demonic sect and invokes the Kui Niu Drum's phantom during the battle 68 74.

Zhong Bai's Foundation Establishment

Qianyuan witnesses the spiritual disturbance caused by Zhong Bai's twelve-layered Dao Platform and initially fears the breakthrough may have failed 118. Once Zhong Bai enters Foundation Establishment, Qianyuan proudly recognizes him as Maoshan's first disciple of the new generation to reach that realm before age thirty 118.

Later Reunions and Separation

Qianyuan eagerly awaits Zhong Bai's return from ten years of cultivation in the Grotto-Heaven Blessed Land and witnesses his disciple emerge at Foundation Establishment Completion 141. Though proud of Zhong Bai's ascent through the Golden Core realm, he admits that his own path is likely confined to Foundation Establishment 201.

After traveling to the New World, Qianyuan reunites with Zhong Bai, Shi Jian, and Four-Eyes. He listens to Zhong Bai's experiences and is astonished that his disciple has already entered the Primordial Spirit realm 264.
