History

During the Late Qing era, Maoshan was already renowned as one of the Three Talisman Sects. Its mountain gate bore the inscription “Shangqing Maoshan Dao Sect,” while Maoshan Town at its foot lived under the sect’s protection. Zhong Bai traveled there after the Wolf Demon massacre of Zhong Family Village, seeking the means to avenge his family and eradicate evil from Jiuzhou 1.

True Immortal Qianyuan admitted Zhong Bai into the mountain gate after hearing his resolve. Zhong Bai subsequently became Qianyuan’s disciple in the Law Enforcement Hall, beginning with the Supreme Clarity Body Forging Art before cultivating the Divine Firmament Five Thunder Art 1 4 7.

Maoshan sends qualified disciples down the mountain to establish Daoist temples and protect designated regions. The top five contestants in the Maoshan Grand Competition earn this privilege and may request sect assistance when facing threats beyond their ability; ordinary departing disciples lack this support 17. After placing among the top five, Zhong Bai was assigned to Jiuquan Town, a dangerous region occupying the Three Fiends Position 18 19.

The sect led a coalition of Taoist and Buddhist forces against the Corpse Refining Demonic Heavenly Sect at Mount Beiman. Maoshan contributed four Foundation Establishment elders and thirty-two disciples above Qi Condensation Layer Six to the expedition 66 69.

After Zhong Bai returned from Jiuquan Town, Maoshan recognized him as its Daozi—the sect’s public representative and anticipated future leader. His appointment was formally announced through an investiture ceremony before visiting Daoists 91 93. Maoshan later publicly supported Zhong Bai after he killed 2,500 Eight Banners soldiers, discouraging retaliation from the Qing court 104.

Following Zhong Bai’s Foundation Establishment breakthrough, Sect Master Xuanmingzi appointed him Law Enforcement Elder, placing him in charge of disciplining Maoshan members who violated sect rules or harmed ordinary people 119 120. Zhong Bai later succeeded Xuanmingzi as Maoshan Sect Leader after reaching Golden Core 176 177.

Maoshan Town and mountain gate

Maoshan Town sits at the foot of the mountain and benefits from the sect’s protection. The route to the sect passes an extensive stone stairway leading to the Shangqing Maoshan Dao Sect gate 1.

Grotto-Heaven Blessed Land

Maoshan possesses a Grotto-Heaven Blessed Land that opens once every ten years. Its spiritual energy is said to be at least ten times denser than that outside, and it contains resources such as demon-beast essence blood 135.

Within the Blessed Land are the Nine Heavens Myriad Blessings Palace and the Primal Talisman Myriad Peace Palace, where Zhong Bai met Maoshan patriarchs and received Spirit Transformation Realm Kui Niu essence blood from the Fifth Patriarch 138 139.

Underworld estate

Maoshan maintains influence in the Underworld through its patriarchal lineage. Zhong Bai entered the Underworld in the flesh under the protection of yin soldiers and was received at the Maoshan Prefectural Lord’s Residence 130.

Its principal palaces include the Nine Heavens Myriad Blessings Palace, Primal Talisman Myriad Peace Palace, and Three Mao Patriarchs’ Hall; its elders include Spirit Transformation cultivators, while Sect Master Tianning Shangren possesses Primordial Spirit cultivation 223.

When Shu Mountain in that world investigated Zhong Bai, the Three Mao Patriarchs confirmed him as the 265th Sect Leader of Maoshan. This recognition caused the other-world Maoshan elders to treat him as a legitimate sect leader despite his arrival from another world 223 225.

Maoshan later supported Zhong Bai’s efforts to restore the Underworld administration, dispatched Loose Immortal Ancestor Jinghong to guard his refinement of the Lord of Mount Tai’s Seal, and enforced Zhong Bai’s Underworld decree across Dongzhou 253 254 256.
