Background / History

The Pupil Ghost first appears as the “Spirit Eyes” within Yang He's Wandering Daoist identity. The Qi Gazing Technique allows Yang He to use it to disperse grudge energy, but every use damages his sight. Its condition is already unstable after resisting red silk in the Lore World. 5

While confronting Nezha's coffin, Yang He pushes the Pupil Ghost beyond its limits. It sheds bloody tears and nearly collapses when the coffin is opened. After the Wandering Daoist dies, Yang He receives the Pupil Ghost as a reward and chooses to exchange for it despite knowing that containment carries the danger of blindness and resurrection. 8

The ghost fuses into Yang He's body as a large eye in the center of his forehead before shrinking and sinking into his flesh. Yang He subsequently develops it through Grandmaster Taiyi's qi-refinement method, which treats Spirit Eyes as an innate divine ability that grows by deriving nine yin meridians. 8 15

Its cultivation initially emphasizes perception, yin-qi circulation, and support. After inheriting the Dao Child's phantom, the Pupil Ghost develops five yin veins; it later reaches nine veins and advances into a Hungry Ghost capable of leaving Yang He's body to parasitize enemies. 40 50

Yang He later rejects several ghost-god promotion paths, including Jiazi Grand Commander's Heavenly Eye and Flame Five Lights Buddha's Glazed Eyes, before choosing the path linked to Haotian Great Emperor's Plague Eye. The resulting transformation grants the Pupil Ghost plague-based control abilities, though the process inflicts a severe plague upon Yang He. 119 120

Through the Nine Refinements Gu Worm Method, the Pupil Ghost is repeatedly dissolved, reshaped, and pupated into an eye-shaped Gu worm. This reconstruction gives rise to eye pupil beetles and eventually the Great Sun Ghost Domain. 139 141 178

Appearance

The Pupil Ghost normally manifests as an eye embedded in Yang He's forehead or palm. Its form becomes progressively more elaborate as it cultivates, developing blood-threaded sclerae, glazed membranes, pupil-like insects, and a spectral body connected by blood vessels. 8 50 121 320

Personality

The Pupil Ghost displays fear toward threats beyond its current level, notably Nezha's coffin and the tiger-striped influence within the yamen. It can become difficult for Yang He to control when exposed to overwhelming yin qi or when pushed toward a breakthrough. 8 23 118

Despite this, it is notably resilient. After being injured by ghost-god phantoms, it calmly absorbs yin qi to repair itself; Yang He considers its Dao Heart more stable than his own. 119

Its bond with Yang He is deeply symbiotic. It willingly endures repeated reconstruction, shares Spiritual Vision with the Descending God Ghost, and continues protecting Yang He even while its own existence is endangered. 155 202
