Background / History

Grandmaster Taiyi first appears in the Ghost Lotus allusion as a disheveled old Daoist who finds Yang He sealed in a clay pot. Calling Yang He his disciple, he offers to complete the latter’s Daoist lineage and teach him the Great Dao of Qianyuan Mountain. His immediate objective is Nezha’s resurrection, for which he requires a Daoist Initiate born on a Yin year and Yin day. Yang He recognizes that the offer may be a means of obtaining a disposable vessel, but accepts the apprenticeship for the cultivation opportunities it provides 14 22.

His identity is initially uncertain. A note left by a former Daoist boy claims that “Boss Zhang” grew a third arm, dressed as a Daoist, and began claiming to be Grandmaster Taiyi of Golden Light Cave. Taiyi’s low apparent threat level, grotesque behavior, and use of living beings in his alchemical work further deepen Yang He’s doubts 14 15.

During the journey to Cailian Town, Taiyi disappears into ghostly mist and is later seen as a hollowed-out corpse being dragged by Madam Yin. He nevertheless returns by possessing the old courier, explaining that he had departed Qianyuan Mountain with only one arm and could exert his full strength only with his complete Three-Headed, Six-Armed Dharma Body 16 17. His repeated returns through corpses, limbs, and residual consciousness establish body snatching as central to his survival.

Taiyi later recognizes Yang He as a natural Corpse Immortal, grants him a jade pháp ấn identifying him as a Qianyuan Mountain disciple, and transmits the grafting method for cultivating a Dharma Body. As his possessed corpse decays, he entrusts Yang He with guarding Nuwa Palace and representing Qianyuan Mountain, while continuing to pass down the Dharma Body’s later stages and refine protective artifacts for him 36 62.

At Qianyuan Mountain, Taiyi’s corpse is eventually found barely alive and transforms into a Dao Foundation Pill upon death. The Old Daoist later consumes this pill, assimilating Taiyi’s body and soul; the Old Daoist is explicitly identified as a separate entity rather than Taiyi himself 119 120.

Taiyi later reappears during the Investiture of the Gods tribulation with severe injuries from fighting Zhao Gongming. He helps Yang He open his Three Corpses Small World, conceals Yang He’s body snatching of Dragon Beard Tiger, and gives him complete annotations for the Three-Headed, Six-Armed Dharma Body, tribulation crossing, and multiple paths to immortality 262 263.

After Taiyi’s soul and spirit are largely destroyed in the Nine Bends Yellow River Formation, a residual consciousness remains within Yang He. He willingly participates in the tribulation, seeks the skin pouches of the Twelve Golden Immortals, and asks Yang He to assist Nezha in obtaining an immortal-ascending method. Before fading, he warns Yang He against visiting Jade Void Palace or seeking him even after reaching the Grand Unity Golden Immortal realm, but leaves a clue regarding an old Daoist riding a green ox at Jiepai Pass 363 365.

When Yang He enters the Qianyuan Mountain historical allusion, Taiyi’s Body Snatching divine ability has spiraled out of control. Numerous malformed Taiyi manifestations occupy Yuan Shi Guan, each claiming to be the original; some are reduced to torsos, heads, or distorted multi-limbed forms. One manifestation consumes the others’ organs and hearts, regaining rationality and approaching Grand Unity Golden Immortal pressure 410.

Yang He subdues the frenzied manifestations and applies the Immortal Skin to Taiyi’s remaining body. Taiyi’s soul and consciousness ultimately disperse, while his true spirit transforms into white light and transcends. Yang He memorizes its aura with Spiritual Vision in hopes of recognizing him in a future life 411.

Appearance

Taiyi commonly appears as an elderly, poorly kept Daoist with a long beard, wrinkles, and a distinctive mole at the corner of his mouth. His appearance is unstable because he frequently inhabits corpses or constructs replacement bodies 14 60 366.

Taiyi is eccentric, theatrical, and frequently unsettling. He laughs at inappropriate moments, speaks in a teasing manner, and treats death, corpse possession, and grotesque cultivation as ordinary matters. His early treatment of Yang He suggests pragmatism bordering on cruelty: Yang He is both a disciple and a possible replacement vessel for Nezha’s resurrection 14 17 22.

Despite this, he becomes a sincere if unconventional mentor. He recognizes Yang He’s potential as a Corpse Immortal, provides advanced teachings and artifacts, keeps Yang He’s body snatching secret, and repeatedly gives practical guidance instead of empty reassurance. He also shows concern for Nezha’s extreme temperament and asks Yang He to protect his senior brother 36 262 263.

Taiyi accepts the Investiture of the Gods tribulation with unusual composure. Rather than cling to survival at any cost, he views the tribulation as a chance to leap beyond his existing limits, even if the outcome depends on fate. His final warnings to Yang He reflect both caution toward the Sages and concern for his disciple’s future 365.
