Background / History

Chan Sect authority and Buddhist ambition

Daoist Rādharana held substantial authority within the Chan Sect. While the Venerable Lord of Primordial Beginning rarely appeared, Rādharana took charge of instructing disciples such as Jiang Ziya, Yang Jian, and their peers. 272 369

He was already preparing to abandon the Chan Sect for Buddhism. Yang He identifies him as the leader of the immortals who would betray the Chan and Jie Sects after the Investiture of the Gods, eventually becoming Buddhism’s first leader. 272 Rādharana’s own plan was to use the Twenty-Four Heavens to establish an independent Buddhist lineage after severing ties with the Venerable Lord of Primordial Beginning. 367

Interest in Yang He

Rādharana repeatedly claimed that Yang He’s Immaculate Buddha identity was “fated” to Buddhism. He regarded Yang He’s unusual immortal body and spiritual root as especially suitable for Western Buddhist cultivation, attempting to pressure him into accepting Buddhist scriptures and secret arts. 272 286

He granted Yang He the damaged Exquisite Pagoda, a Chan Sect Dao Fruit, and the Aniruddha’s Flowing Great Seal scripture. His offers were tied to warnings about the Corpse Daoist Initiate, making his recruitment attempt both generous and coercive. 286

The Twenty-Four Heavens scheme

Rādharana sought to refine the Sea-Calming Pearls into the Twenty-Four Heavens: a supreme Buddhist Immortal Court capable of housing innumerable believers. He believed the completed treasure would be essential to his future ascent and independence. 367

After Ma Shan was killed, Rādharana used the disciple’s karmic fire to transmit the Twenty-Four Heavens technique to Yang He. Yang He subsequently gained an inheritance claim over the treasure, creating the vulnerability that would undermine Rādharana’s entire plan. 354 355

Buddha fruit position and Mount Lingjiu

At Mount Lingjiu, Rādharana cultivated corpses, Malevolent Spirits, and Living Immortal Skulls as Buddhist believers. Their chanting nourished a false Heavenly Dao tree and produced the flawed Buddha fruit position intended to make him Ancient Buddha Rādharana. 391 392

The fruit position was stolen by Yang He before Rādharana could refine it. Sage Jieyin condemned the failure, while Rādharana blamed Yang He and suspected Daoist Duobao of exploiting the incident. 393 394

Collapse and death

Rādharana refined the Twenty-Four Heavens further and created twenty-four guardian deities, but Yang He secretly influenced the guardians through his prior connection to the treasure. The resulting rebellion damaged Mount Lingjiu, weakened Rādharana’s control, and destabilized his Dao Heart. 399 402 404

Driven by fear that Yang He had laid traps throughout his Dao field, Rādharana became increasingly reckless. He fed his own flesh and heart to Yang He’s corrupted avatars, then allowed Yang He to maneuver him into personally completing the Nirvana Seal. 415 416

When Rādharana refined the seal under Daoist Zhunti’s pressure, Yang He’s hidden consciousness seized his body. Rādharana realized too late that the Nirvana Seal had been designed to turn him into Yang He’s vessel. 418

Appearance

Rādharana usually manifests as a disheveled old Daoist carrying a lamp. The lamplight illuminates only a small area around him, yet his arrival can halt an entire ghost domain. 286

Rādharana is calculating, patient, and habitually indirect. He frames threats as advice, presents coercive recruitment as karmic destiny, and uses valuable teachings or treasures to bind others to his plans. 272 286

He is also intensely suspicious. When his guardian deities rebel, his first assumption is that the Western Sages have betrayed him; he then suspects Yang He despite considering it impossible for a mortal to infiltrate Mount Lingjiu. 402

His composure deteriorates whenever Yang He disrupts a plan. The loss of the Buddha fruit position, the corruption of the Twenty-Four Heavens, and Grand Supreme Elder Lao’s apparent descent gradually turn his caution into paranoia, rage, and qi deviation. 393 403 416
