Background / History

Zhang Xiaofan is a Grand Bamboo Peak disciple under Tian Buyi. Initially underestimated during the Seven Meridians Martial Arts Tournament, he advances to the Top 32, then reaches the Top 8 by wielding the Fire-Burning Staff and defeating a Seventh Layer Jade Purity disciple across realms. Daoist Cangsong recognizes the Blood Devouring Pearl’s aura within the weapon but does not expose it at the time 30 39.

After the tournament, Zhang Xiaofan joins Wang Quan Yan, Lu Xueqi, and Zeng Shushu on the Kongsang Mountain mission. He fights Blood Refining Hall members and later descends with the group into the Dead Spirit Abyss 57 66 67.

Wang Quan Yan teaches him a rapid Sword Control Technique. While travelling to Liubo Mountain, Zhang Xiaofan’s blood-red aura causes fellow Righteous Path cultivators to mistake him for a Demonic Cult expert; Wang Quan Yan destroys the incoming attacks with a single sword strike and saves him 82 89 90.

At Liubo Mountain, Zhang Xiaofan is cornered by elite Demonic Cult disciples. The Soul Devouring Stick’s blood aura nearly overwhelms him, but he instinctively uses the Buddhist technique Great Brahma Prajna to resist it. The revelation shocks both the Righteous and Demonic Paths and brings accusations that he is a spy 95 96.

Tianyin Temple later confronts him at Qingyun Sect over Great Brahma Prajna. Divine Monk Pu Hong reveals that Holy Monk Puzhi was involved in the Caomiao Village massacre and gave Zhang Xiaofan both Great Brahma Prajna and the Blood Devouring Pearl. Unable to bear the truth, Zhang Xiaofan falls into demonic possession until Wang Quan Yan knocks him unconscious to stop his suffering 112 115 128.

Personality

Zhang Xiaofan is initially unassuming and easily flustered, particularly when confronted by danger or misunderstanding. He is distressed when his own sect mistakes him for a Demonic Cult fiend and struggles to understand why he is being treated with suspicion 90.

Despite fear and low confidence, he resists the Soul Devouring Stick’s corrupting influence when cornered at Liubo Mountain. Being called “waste” provokes him to fight back rather than surrender 95.

His tendency to conceal painful truths leaves him isolated when his Buddhist cultivation and demonic artifact are exposed. Wang Quan Yan regards this secrecy as the source of suffering Zhang Xiaofan must endure 96.
