Background / History

Raven was originally an ordinary man from Earth. After being killed in a traffic accident, his soul awakened within the Misty Space; over time, he mastered its authority and acquired a raven’s body. The Misty Space granted him extraordinary capabilities, including travel across time, space, and universes. 3

He first appeared in the Warhammer universe as a raven sculpture revived by the Emperor’s touch. Initially presenting himself as a being able to grant “supreme power, wealth, and authority,” he instead proposed a cooperative arrangement: Raven would guide the Emperor through other universes, alter established fates, and collect the resulting Origin Power. 1 2

Raven’s knowledge of the Emperor’s future defeat, the scattered Primarchs, and the grim destiny of humanity persuaded the Emperor to accept the partnership. Raven became a central adviser in early Imperial policy, including the treatment of psykers and the proposed fate of the Thunder Warriors. 2 7 25

The Emperor formally recognized Raven as an ally and co-ruler of the Imperium. The second head of the double-headed eagle banner came to represent Raven, binding his position to the newborn empire’s identity. 19

Later, Raven and the Emperor occupied the two-seat Golden Throne together. Its authority greatly amplified Raven’s perception of time, space, fate, and events across the Imperium. The subsequent upgrade of the Misty Space enabled permanent passages between universes and allowed Raven to receive distress calls from other realities. 125 126

Appearance

Raven usually appears as a small, talking black raven with brilliant eyes. He can float without spreading his wings and frequently materializes from mist, light, or spatial distortions. 1 115 180

  • Entirely black feathers. 1
  • Exceptionally bright eyes, sometimes marked by mist and strange runes when using his authority. 1 126
  • Can alter his size and reveal a vastly larger divine form. 180
  • Often perches on the Emperor, Primarchs, or Custodes while speaking. 41 150 153

Personality

Raven is irreverent, theatrical, and aggressively informal around even the Emperor. He habitually gives people mocking nicknames, makes unreasonable demands, and treats grave political or cosmic matters with flippancy. His favorite subjects are fries, ketchup, and assigning inconvenient work to Waldo. 41 127 153

Behind this laziness is a calculating strategist. Raven understands established fate, uses knowledge as leverage, and readily provokes enemies into revealing themselves or making mistakes. He has manipulated Daemons, Chaos-aligned figures, cults, and powerful local factions by exploiting their greed, ambition, or fear. 60 123 140 148

He is also protective of individuals he considers part of his circle. He guides Primarchs away from their predestined downfalls, supports Corvus’s rebellion, mentors Anakin, and intervenes when humanity in other universes faces annihilation. 143 153 173 178

Abilities & Skills

Misty Space Authority

Raven’s powers originate from his control of the Misty Space, an enigmatic realm he inherited after his death.

  • Travels between universes through spacetime tunnels and wormholes. 25 108
  • Tears open spatial rifts for near-instant travel across a galaxy or within a universe. 115 120 138
  • Can establish permanent inter-universal routes after the Misty Space’s upgrade. 126 127
  • Receives distress calls from other realities through the upgraded Misty Space. 126
  • Is subject to restrictions imposed by some universes’ wills when entering them. 171

Information and Fate Perception

Raven can read information and residual traces left in a universe, granting him knowledge of people, events, and established futures.

  • Identified the Emperor, his bargain with the Chaos Gods, and the survival of the scattered Primarchs shortly after arriving in the Warhammer universe. 2
  • Reads local information to identify enemies and key figures in unfamiliar universes. 96 188
  • Perceives disturbances in fate and detects external manipulation, such as the Secret Cult’s involvement with Alpharius and Omega. 140
  • Uses the Golden Throne to observe events, origins, time, and space on a vastly greater scale. 126

Presence Concealment

Raven was initially protected by a Misty Space mechanism that limited who could perceive or remember him.

  • Could remain invisible to anyone not acknowledged or permitted by a “protagonist of fate.” 2
  • Could allow selected people, such as Waldo, to perceive him. 2
  • After Warhammer’s fate nodes changed by more than 30%, he removed the main concealment measure. 41
  • Those not recognized could still forget Raven after looking away from him. 41

Restoration and Life Manipulation

Raven can restore damaged bodies and empower or revive others.

  • Repaired Sanguinius’s armor and body during battle, then restored Guilliman’s strength and equipment. 96
  • Restored Gai Jiuyou’s youth, peak strength, and damaged Dao with life force containing temporal power. 119
  • Resurrected Palpatine so his identity as the Sith Lord could be publicly exposed. 177

Summoning and Spatial Retrieval

Raven can pull allies or targets through portals, often without warning.

  • Summoned Waldo and several Adeptus Custodes to support Corvus’s rebellion on Lyssia. 153
  • Summoned Primarchs to other universes through Loki’s Infinity Gauntlet-assisted power. 89
  • Summoned Primal Heavenly Venerate to assist in investigations and captures. 188 191
  • Retrieved survivors from a collapsing universe and relocated them to the Ultraman universe. 196

Strategic Manipulation

Raven is more comfortable directing conflict than fighting personally.

  • Uses visions, forbidden knowledge, and tempting offers to destabilize enemies such as Karlos, the Great Daemon of Change. 123
  • Threatened Rakash with sacrifice to Slaanesh, forcing him to reveal information about Commorragh. 60
  • Uses knowledge of established tragedy to prevent Primarchs from repeating their destined failures. 144 152
  • Claims he is not good at direct fighting and commonly delegates combat to the Emperor or stronger allies. 113
