Background / History
Horus was created by the Emperor as the sixteenth Primarch: one of the Warp-linked “anchors” intended to stabilize a force of superhuman conquerors and serve as the template for the Astartes Legions. Before the Emperor could raise him, the Chaos Gods raided the laboratory and scattered the Primarchs across the galaxy. 34
His incubation pod crashed on Kossonia, a gang world near the Solar System. Injured as a child, he was nearly butchered for food before gang boss Hagerton rescued and adopted him, naming him Nel'igu—“no name.” Horus later killed a Mechanicus explorer, took the Tech-Priest's weapon as a trophy, and returned to the tribe seeking a name earned through slaughter. When the Mechanicus retaliated, Hagerton ordered Horus to strike him; Horus killed his adoptive father and received the name “Horus” before the tribe was destroyed. His dormant genes then awakened, and his growth accelerated until the Adeptus Mechanicus identified and recovered him. 34
The Emperor received Horus as a son but refused to hand him command of the Sixteenth Legion immediately. Instead, he offered Horus the choice of an ordinary life or a period of learning and proof. Horus chose to prove himself, studying at expeditionary fleet academies, where his extraordinary learning ability and charisma rapidly earned him a following. 35
Appearance
Horus is a Primarch of immense stature, imposing presence, and exceptional physical beauty. He is commonly shown in ornate gold armor marked by an eye motif. 34 130 167
- Sharp sea-green eyes with amber pupils. 167
- Broad, powerful build far larger than an Astartes. 167
- Gold armor with an eye pattern on the chest and a laurel wreath. 130
- Wears the fur of a great beast as a trophy. 167
Personality
Horus is intensely ambitious and craves recognition as the Emperor's foremost son. He repeatedly asserts that returning first makes him the rightful eldest, and his rivalry with Lion El'Jonson becomes a defining motivation in both politics and war. Alpharius's revelation that he had actually returned earlier leaves Horus frustrated and diminished, though Sanguinius helps restore his resolve. 46 68 130
He is also highly loyal to the Emperor and Raven. When Kyler threatens to expose the Sixteenth Legion's disgrace, Horus considers force to protect the Legion's reputation and is most distressed by the possibility that Raven or the Emperor might oppose him; he states that he loves them more than himself. 152
Despite his pride, Horus can be pragmatic and protective of his brothers. He and Lion agree to a draw rather than shame each other after Commorragh, and he saves Lion from the Outsider even though allowing Lion to fall would have won their contest. 76 130 He is capable of restraint toward unfamiliar civilizations, rejecting Abaddon's call to destroy the Great Turtle of the Disc World without cause and choosing investigation over immediate violence. 203 204
